Builder/Contractor/Construction Manager

Construction Management, including managing trades and supply of materials, construction schedules. Quality control and technical inspections.

 

  1. What are the duties and/or tasks you perform at your job?

Duties a listed above with the addition of job site supervision.

  1. What qualifications do you have for this job in the following areas:
  2. training?

Project management certificate with the addition of various vocational and regular university level courses in construction related topics.

Many in depth construction courses provided by BC housing, BC home builders association and many other educational institutions in the last 10 years. A master’s degree in business.

Over 25 years of experience in residential and commercial construction.

Being able to adapt to being put in poor situations, having a skilled business mindset. More listed above.

  1. What are some of the things you like about the job?

Building houses that save energy with less power and natural gas consumption to cause less pollution. As well as building smart houses (using updated technology, hardware and software) to manage and monitor all family needs, and to make a more pleasing environment to live in.

 

 

  1. What are some of the things you dislike about this job?

Being put through intense/hard labor throughout a long time period, also having to do this work through all-weather conditions. Sudden changes in city bylaws cause delays which can be frustrating.

 

  1. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so?

 

Likely that it shall move more toward saving energy and having nature friendly/green construction. Looking forward to having the construction site being a healthier environment.

I believe that this is the perfect job for me. After going to my father’s job site, my interest in this line of work has gone even deeper and has become even more profound. Not only that, but my father’s experience and expertise really help me gain a better understanding of what the real world is like, and what it means to have a job like this. Looking at it from a new perspective, it even seems fun, so I wouldn’t have to “work” at all.

  1. Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).

Post-secondary I plan on applying for a university such as UBC, UVIC, or SFU to take on studies specifically around structural engineering and architecture. TYKTW has provided me with an idea of what it would be like carry responsibility of not only myself, but of the job site as well.

    Good work on your Take Your Kid to Work Day assignment. You have included a photo of your workplace visit and you have correctly tagged and labelled your assignment. You could provide a little more detail (i.e. interview section) next time and develop your responses further in some of your questions.
