Science 9

Wood Bug Lab:

Within the first two weeks into Science, we were already working on a lab. The ‘Wood Bug Lab’ was the first lab Mena, Max, Russel, and I worked on in this course. I was quite pleased with our lab, though it wasn’t perfect. I feel we communicated our ideas very well through this lab, demonstrating our understanding. We also used creativity in our plan to come up with an experiment that differs from the basic ‘Science Lab’ experiments. We also learned a bit about social responsibility in this experiment, from watching the wood bugs interact with humanized foods. It really opened my eye to how devastating pollution and littering can be to an ecosystem. Overall, the experiment was a success, and I’d like to do an experiment like this in the future.

In our electricity unit, we researched into the Site-C dam project. This project is very controversial and affects the local economy, making it a perfect prospect for an in-class inquiry. I worked with Mena and Russel on this project, which allowed us to each hear the others’ ideas and we were able to draw conclusions from the weight of the ideas, demonstrating critical thinking. We also heavily relied on communication, from writing the answers down on the worksheet, to expressing our ideas to the other people in our group. This assignment also required social responsibility, by showing us the impacts of a massive project like this on our families, communities, and the province. I really enjoyed researching the Site-C Dam, and I found it quite informative and really showed me some perspective on political matters in our province.

At the end of Unit 5, we used Word to format our Root Tip Lab. I am very familiar with most word processors like Word, Pages, Google Docs, etc. so this task was fairly easy. In this lab we had to communicate out ideas and observations, which can sometimes pose a challenge as not every audience will understand what you’re saying. My group and I used some critical thinking to assess the individual cells and describe the cells. We had to look over the criteria, and see which diagram fit the plant cell the most, telling us whether the cell was in Interphase or PMAT. I really have enjoyed science this year and hope it is as enjoyable next year.
