Core Competency Assignment

(Communication)
I believe that communication is one of the most useful core competencies I use on a day-to-day basis. I demonstrate these communication skills in many parts of my school days and at home. I have determined I’m a good listener. I use my listening skills when I’m taking in information from my peers and try to remember it, so I can use that information later down the road on a test or a project. I also have a loud clear voice making clear communication one of my strengths. I use my clear voice when I’m presenting to the class or when I’m talking with my peers, making it easy to understand what I’m communicating. I also use my communication skills when I’m making plans with my friends. I find communication being 1 of my stronger core competencies. The easiest methods of communication for me are teamwork building skills, presenting skills, and negotiation skills falling into the speaking and listening categories. Some skills communication areas I would like to improve on this year are my writing skills and reading skills, I can improve these by reading and writing more.

Creative Thinking
I believe that I’m a creative person, I come up with many new ideas and I use many strategies to come up with these new ideas. Many things help me come up with these ideas, for example, I like using the internet to come up with many of these ideas like YouTube and Pinterest. For example, I saw this mountain bike photo on Pinterest, and I wanted to recreate it and try to make it my own. I also get a lot of my new ideas from collaborating with my friends and family. Many things make me want to get new ideas. I get most of the creative ideas from social media. For example, I like to go through the Mountain biking photography hashtag on Instagram to look at hundreds of other creative photographers and photos and find the ones that stand out to me. After I find the photos I like to try to recreate them with my friends and make them our own. I also like listening to music. Music has always brought out my creative side of thinking because listening to music helps me focus and inspires me to make something of my own. For example, when I was trying to write a poem for English class, I’ll listen to music to help get some ideas flowing.
Personal and Social
(personal awareness and responsibility)

When I feel discouraged about my work/performance, I try to help myself using various strategies. One of the ways I help myself is by taking breaks. For example, if I’m working on a project and I’m stressing or feeling discouraged I will take a 20-minute break and eat something or go outside to let my mind take a break, I will make sure I’m ready and focused when I come back. Another way I help myself is by asking friends or family for help. For example, if I’m not doing well in a course or on a project I will ask my parents or friends for some help This is very helpful as it helps me understand what I’m learning better and encourages me to do better and try harder. One of my learning goals for this year is going to try to be time management and procrastination. I need to try to stop leaving things to the last minute and stressing about them and just get it done I will try to work on it by setting reminders on my phone to start whatever ever I’m doing.

Social Responsibility

From start to finish I used social responsibility, While creating our propaganda poster on cloning. Throughout the project, my partner and I had to “build relationships” with other groups and classmates. Constantly throughout this project, we needed to ask other groups and peers if our poster made sense and if they could be improved. We had to “build good relationships” with them so that they could give us feedback and we could do the same thing back. I think throughout this project I also demonstrated “solving problems peacefully”. While working on our poster we had some small mistakes because we were doing it on paper. For example, I messed up spelling one of the words. I had to “solve it peacefully” by using white-out. I could’ve restarted and wasted time but instead, I solved peacefully and calmly.

This project I decided to work with a partner, I demonstrated that “I can be apart of a group”. From start to finish I had to make sure that the work was divided up evenly. For example, my partner and I decided that he would do the written part and I would do the poster. While dividing up the work I had to show that “I can clarify problems or issues, and generate strategies to solve them”. For example, I had to use it while we were dividing up the work. I knew that my partner was not the best and drawing so I “realized the problem” and I knew that I was good at art so I did the poster and he did the write-up. I think I also participated in “contributing to activities that make my classroom and community a better place”. For example, I participated in helping my classmates and peers on their projects. It made them overall do better on their projects, and in turn, they helped me. For example, I used it while the class was peer editing groups posters and giving helpful feedback. If know-one in the class decided to participate it would not help us, we would not know what we could improve on for next time. If the class and I didn’t ” contribute to this activity” it would have affected our mark.

For the next project, I think that I could improve on “I can identify when others need support and provide it”. Throughout this project, my partner and I were focused on our self and never really looked around to see if others would need our help. I also think for next time I could work on my time management. My partner and I didn’t always focus causing us to leave everything the last night. For next time I think we should work on “I can solve some problems myself and can identify when to ask for help”. For example, we got stuck on our slogan for a while and we never really “identified when to ask for help” so we just wasted time and forgot about it. In conclusion, I think my partner and I did a good job on our propaganda poster, next time we will know what to work on.

 

 

 

Invention Project

Commucation reflection:Coming up with our ideas for our invention, me and my partner had to communicate together to find out what we wanted to invent. We also needed to communicate very well when we where talking and answering questions from are peers and classmates. Throughout our invention fair I had to “Ask and respond to simple, direct questions”. For an example when we presenting are invention to our classmates so that they could fill out their sheets we had to respond quickly and have upright answers. Not only that when we had to explain a proposal to Mr Castonguay, we need to answer his questions and present are project very well and thoroughly. I think that I also demonstarted that “I can present infomation clearly and in an organized way”. As an example I think for our small poster that we made it was very organized and well put together. I think that it presented our information vert clearly because it had a drawing in the middle with labels telling what the parts did what and how they did it. It also showed how, when other classmates where looking at are poster they could fill it out easily with out having to ask any questions.

I think in our planning parts of our invention my partner and I did a very good job on “summerizing key ideas and ways we agree on it”. For an example are first idea was to creates some type of water proofing spray. But after we thought about it and how easy it would be to create and make we both agreed together that we wouldn’t use that idea. While we where also planning are idea for are invention there where “some ideas and different points of views that I didn’t always agree on”. For example when we where discussing about one invention that Josh may of thought was a good idea. But I did not agree on, I had to say in a respectful way why I don’t agree on it and why and offer what my suggestion is, or how we could improve on the idea. 

Although there were many good things I did demonstrate from this activity, there were some I also need to work on.  I think for next I do a partner project I can work on “I can take roles and responsibiliities in a group”. For an example I did all the poster for our project but Josh did the write up and the proposal. Even thought the poster is more important it took a-lot time less. I think next time I could help josh more by helping with the write up because I did take a-lot more time and effort. I also think that I can work on my time management. For a example I kinda blew off the poster until the night before. I think I should have done parts of it before the last night. By leaving it to the last night I think that it affected are poster because I think I could have spent more time colouring the poster because it wasn’t the most exiting poster but it got the job done. In conclusion I think I did a good job demonstrating the core competency communication but I think I could have done a better job doing some small things.
