What I Would Like to Learn in English 10

In Literary Studies 10 I would like to learn how to improve my short story writing, while also developing stronger language. I want to be able to know when I’m writing which words I can use to strengthen my work. When writing short stories, I want to be able to brainstorm, plan, write, and then edit effectively. Another area of study I would like to incorporate into my writing is the correct use of integration of quotes, either from a novel study or an article and to translate those passages into my short stories.

Reflection:

One of the main competencies we used during the process of this assignment was communication. I was with a group that I had full confidence in working with. Right off the bat, we were off to work on our scenes. We knew we had limited time to complete and write them. We communicated extremely well with each other during the planning of our skits. We even went to one of our houses to practice, as well as coming in before school to practice. We listened to each other when writing our script and came together to decide what to delete when it came to fitting in all of our parts. We recognized that there were different points-of-view when writing the script but we were able to talk it out by agreeing upon which were the most important parts of the scene and including them. We were able to present our play in an organized and clear way all the while presenting it in an entertaining way. We were able to collaboratively achieve the common goal of making sure our play was elaborate in the information we were giving and also making sure that our play flowed well. We had great connections with each other during the play and we were able to achieve a persona with the characters we were portraying. We each took on the responsibility of writing the parts of our character and also bringing props and costumes on the day of the play. Overall I think that our process and also our end result show how much work we put into this assignment and I think it shows during our performance.

French Revolution Radio Broadcast

Reflection:

During the process of filming this video, I and my partner Jamie used communication and creative thinking. The purpose of this video was to create a French broadcast that would supposedly be played during the time of the French revolution. You had to pick a certain topic we had learned about and then talk about it. You had to make sure you had all the correct information as well as entertaining parts such as commercials and sports updates. I and Jamie were able to bounce idea’s off of each other during the writing process of our script. We listened to each other’s ideas and collaboratively combined them into our script. I and Jamie are both taking French at the moment so we thought it would be entertaining to incorporate some little french sayings into our video. It is supposed to be a French broadcast after all. We were able to make our ideas work during the process of filming and editing the video. Through the process of learning about the French revolution ( More specifically the women’s march on Versailles) we were able to research our topic and include credible information into our video. During the editing of this video, I was able to learn more skills when it came to editing and putting sound effects into it. I will use those skills for future projects. Overall, I think our French radio broadcast was a huge success, not only information, but also for entertainment.

Invention Project (Industrial Revolution)

Abbie and Jamie’s invention project: Generation Gum

Reflection:

Throughout the process of this assignment, I and my partner Jamie used Communication and Creative thinking. For this assignment, we had to come up with an original invention that was based upon the industrial revolution. We had to make sure our invention hit the triple E bottom line. At the start of this assignment, I and Jamie brainstormed ideas about our invention that would hopefully be useful and able to make an impact on the world. We used our communication skills by listening to each other’s perspectives and ideas on the assignment and applying them to our invention. We were each able to do our share of the work. In the photo’s above you can see that there are two models to our invention. I did the rounder container and Jaime did the other. We were both able to communicate the vision we had for our invention and carry it out. Our invention is a modern modified version of gum packaging. Whenever you need to throw out your gum, there never seems to be a place to dispose of it. So I and Jamie had the idea to put a built-in garbage bin in the packaging. Gum is also mainly made out of plastic, so, therefore, takes a long time to dispose of. Our gum is also natural with ingredients that known. Our packaging is also biodegradable so that the product as a whole does not generate more harm to the environment. I and Jaime are both passionate about the health of our earth and I think we were able to communicate that to our final invention. We were able to build off of each other’s ideas and generate new ideas as we pursued further into the assignment. We were able to achieve a lot of success in the “Invention fair” that our class put on as a showcase for other peers. We got a lot of compliments on how our idea was smart, and that hopefully, some form of our product will become the normal product in the future. As a whole, I and Jamie were able to curate an inventive idea that I hope we be prevalent in the future.

Reflection:

I would say that the most important core competency that I used during the process of writing this short story would be creative thinking. At the start of the process of writing this story, I had no idea what story I was going to tell. I made a mind map to generate and display my ideas. I also asked for other peoples opinions on what I should write, I was then able to generate and build off of other peoples thoughts and ideas to achieve my topic for my story. I wrote the beginning of my story 3 times, in an effort to build my thought process through the story. I was able to make my ideas work, even though I had to revise a couple of times. When I got stuck and didn’t know what to write next, I would get up and walk around the room, this helped my mind breathe a little when it was stuck, and I was able to continue my writing with a fresh mind. One main problem I came across during the writing was the fact that I had accidentally written 2500 words when you were only supposed to write 1500. I had to cut a lot of my story down. This was an issue because I had to make sure my story still flowed well and wasn’t choppy. Overall I was very happy with the end result of my short story and I will use these tools again when writing to hopefully achieve the same results.

Earth Science Video

Reflection: For this assignment, I and my group members had to make a video about a concerning topic that was impacting the environment. We chose Ocean Acidification, as we thought this topic is not generally talked about much. We thought that we could make this video enjoyable to watch but still bring awareness to the topic itself. We used thoughtful and critical thinking for the planning of this video as well as having our research organizer to store all of our research . Through our research organizer, we were able to monitor our progress and adjust our actions to make sure our video came out the way we wanted. Each person was responsible for their own work in the group. We were able to show responsibility, by providing strong information that related to our topic.  We were very organized during the process of making this video. We made sure we had credible sources when researching our topic, by using the school’s library trusted sources list to gather our information. Without our communication, we wouldn’t have been able to complete this project or have it turn out the way it did. We could have done better by including more information about how you could help out this growing issue, and also the places ocean acidification is majorly impacting. Making a video like this is a good way to spread the message about issues such as these, but to also have the fun in creating a video.

Reflection: In this assignment, we learned about ways we can reduce waste in our everyday lives. My group did Bamboo toothbrushes and eco-friendly toothpaste. Bamboo toothbrushes have boar bristles which are completely plant-based and vegan-friendly. You can dispose of these toothbrushes in the compost bin rather than throwing away plastic ones. We educated ourselves and others about how we can all have a positive impact on the environment as well as how we can recycle/use alternatives. The only improvement I would make to this assignment would be to divide up the workload in the group.

Woodbug Lab

Reflection: For this assignment, I and my group members had to design an experiment with woodbugs and see how they would react. My group’s experiment was to see if the woodbugs reacted to light. We covered the woodbugs up for different periods of time and exposed them to the flashlight. We chose this type of experiment becuase woodbugs typically live under rocks or wood, so they are underground all the time. So we thought it would be interesting to see if the woodbugs reacted to the light or if they didn’t at all. Our thought process was that If the woodbugs typically never see light, then they would get scared and maybe curl up as if trying to defend themselves. My group used critical thinking a lot throughout the duration of this assignment.  We analyzed the woodbugs during our experiment. We were careful to keep our experiment in a controlled space so that we could get accurate results. At first, we just wanted to shine the light on the woodbugs, but then we decided to do different times so that we could get an idea of how long the woodbugs needed to be under light to react. This shows that we were able to analyze our thoughts and we were able to consider more than one way of an investigation. We were also able to collaborate and get evidence from different perspectives and also identifying the criteria for this assignment. I think my group could do better next time by researching the background of Woodbugs. During our experiment, we noticed that the woodbugs were not reacting at all to the light. We later found out that Woodbugs cannot see light and that they have tiny light receptors. Next time I think a little more research will be needed if we were to do another assignment like this.
