Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communicating – I show communication by communicating with my peers wether thats inside or outside of school.  Communicating to my peers helps me learn more and understand what I’m learning.  Communication also helps me with new opportunities such as making new friends or volunteering around my community.  Two areas of communication I would like to work on are writing and speaking.  Some strategies i can use to work on my writing and speaking is gathering information from the books I read and asking my teachers or grandparents for help.

Creative Thinking – Some ways I like to show my creative thinking are creating new ideas to help me learn more and or completing my assignments like photography.  Photography shows my creative thinking by making me take my creative ideas and show them in one of my passions.  How I can expand my creative thinking: I can ask of help and expand ideas that I already have.

Social Awareness and Responsibility – Some ways I show social awareness and responsibility is by volunteering around my community and helping others such as my peers in my community and at school.  On my school breaks and long weekends I like to volunteer at my local dog daycare and socialize with the owners.  When my community has a social gathering or an event I like to help out by setting up the event or socializing with the guests.  Some things I would like to work on in this competency is socialization, even though I do it on a regular bases, I’m still not comfortable constantly talking to people I don’t know.

Reflection:

Here is evidence I can generate ideas with my friends to make the video interesting for the listeners.  I can build my friend and I’s ideas onto of each other to make a more interesting video.  I can develop ideas through learning the French Revolution and take evidence from that.  I can use my writing and express what happened in that time period.  I can take risks with adding ads

I can further this by, creating more ideas, have more speaking roles, have more time in the video or more facts included

Here is evidence that I can…

Generated ideas with my friends to come up with an invention, I built upon each others imaginations of the jacket to make it nice and have a general idea of what it would be.   I developed ideas for what the invention would be.  I used setbacks to advance my creative thinking in creating the jacket with my friends (The jacket didn’t work well, something went wrong).  I took risks in creating the jacket by trying to add more or make some of it myself.  I communicated with my friends to create the jacket and we gave each other roles in the process.  We helped each other out and made creative thinking ideas together.

Ways I want to improve are:

Taking as much as I can do  Finding more gateways to make things either creative and easy and not more than I can chew.  Communicating more about ideas and what we could add on (not the jacket i.e. if we did another project that could have been more creative than the original idea and maybe better than the jacket).  Helping out more outside of school and working more together rather then at home where we don’t have each others opinions (if we each had enough time after school).

Reflection: Core Competency – Creative Thinking

I can generate new ideas for creating my poem and build upon previous sentences to create a rhyme.  I can combine my ideas to make a poem interesting and I can experiment with words in my poem to see which words or sentence fits best.

Ways I want to improve are:

I want to make my poem flow I little more nicely and have better word choices or a proper structure to it with flow.

Reflection – Critical Thinking

I can analyze websites and pick out useful information from trusted sources.  I reasoned and connected of what would happen in the food chain and what is happening to animals and humans with PCBs.  My group and I modeled/made pictures visualizing the situation and what’s happening to the orcas and factories.  We reflected and connected of what would happen to us and the wildlife in the future.  We used technology to research more about Orcas and PCBs in the environment.

Ways I would improve are researching it more and organizing and going more into depth about the food chain.

Reflection – Communication

I can collaborate with my partners by discussing websites and different ways sorting out information.  I can teach my peers about certain things happening to our environment.  I am considerate to others when we collaborate and I take others people ideas and build on them for a fair share.  I contributed to class discussions when I talked about recycling.  I justified my answers about recycling when researching and gathering evidence from recycling places and stores.  I shared my ideas with my partners when we had to put the recycling poster together and when we needed to collaborate ideas for the final product.

I can generate new ideas by building off of things I already know.  I can build my ideas by combining with others and thinking of new ideas with others and by adding things on to things I know.  I can develop ideas by creatively thinking about what could happen next in the future or book by writing and combining ideas so it makes sense.  I can add onto my ideas without making thinks not make sense and I can combine ideas to add, creatively think and develop new ideas about the project.

Ways I want to improve are…
Helping my team generate creative new ideas and more combining of all our ideas.  I think in our group we needed more teamwork and more group work.  I think in our group we all needed to think more about the others in the group and treat each other equally.  I think in our group I needed to be more involved.

The Interview:

  1. What is your job title: PawTrakz
  2. What is your job description? Dog walker/hiker
  3. What are the duties/tasks you preform at your job?  Boarding daycare for dogs that hikes and walks them.  Also helps train the dog off and on leash and to listen/listen to commands.
  4. What qualifications do you have for this job in the following areas.

a) Training?  Because you work with several dogs at once you need lots of experience with dogs, with like training and how to deal with them.  Watched and went to some seminars but its mostly experience that you need.

b) Education? Carolina went to interior designing school so you don’t really need any education for this job.

c) Experience? Carolina has worked with dogs for years and has worked in the past at another dog daycare for 4 years more than full time before she open PawTrakz.

d) Skills and attributes (personal qualities?) Carolina is a hard worker and works and hikes with the dogs a lot, she also needs to be really honest to tell the owners that the dog dislikes it there or if they are not a good fit.

  1. (5) Some things you like about this job?  You get to spend a lot of time outside, which Carolina loves taking the dogs out for a hike in the forest.  You cant be lazy so it takes up a lot of time for walking/hiking with the dogs to tire them out.
  2. (6) Some things you dislike about this job? Cleaning the dogs is tough sometimes and cleaning the daycare to get rid of accidents the dogs made or all the fur build up.  Cleaning the car is tough too with all the fur.
  3. (7) How do you anticipate the job changing in the next 5 years or so?  Getting some help (Like Abby(me)) to get more clients and to grow the business.

Student Reflection:

  1. 3 reasons why you would like this job
  • I love dogs, they are my passion and I absolutely love working and being around them
  • I love the outdoors and I love hiking as well and its a way to stay active
  • You get to explore on the hike and enjoy being outdoors and its also a way to talk to other dog owners/lovers
  1. (2) 3 reasons why I would not like this job
  • The cleaning part is kind of icky but I mean I wouldn’t enjoy it its just something that you have to do in order to have this amazing job
  • Sometimes on the hikes it starts to rain really hard or just when your getting started on the hike it starts to pour and that makes me uncomfortable
  • Sometimes the dogs can be really energetic and/or not that well trained so you have to be really patient
  1. (4) after high school I would love to go into zoology, dogs I don’t think have a huge part in it but I love being around animals.  I would also love to be part of PawTrakz because I’ve been volunteering there for around 3 years now and I absolutely love being around the dogs.  I feel like being with the dogs is good because I’m not loosing interest in animals and I’m around all sorts of different personality traits in the dogs.

Core Competencies Reflection – Creative Thinking

I can generate new ideas by gathering ideas from my partner and deep thinking about my object I am making the story about.  I can build ideas by combining ideas with my partner and build up on those ideas.  I can develop ideas by writing and seeing where the story goes and seeing how it fits my story.  My partner and I collaborated on ideas and what the object would be through communication and we both got involved an even amount.  I think my partner and I made the story detailed enough so that the reader can visualize what was happening in the and what the setting looked like.  Things I would do differently would be maybe making the story longer and more in depth, but we did have enough time.   I think I improved on my creative writing but I still would like my writing to be a little more detailed.

Here is evidence that I can…. collaborate, teach, be considerate to others discuss, contribute to class discussion, explain, justify, share ideas, etc.

I collaborated with my partners by helping them join our thoughts on what the experiment should be about.  I taught my peers and teachers what I learned when we did the tiggy hog experiment. I was considerate to others when my friend couldn’t bring something, so I brought it for her.  I discussed the tiggy hog experiment with my partners about supplies, how many minuets and writing the conclusion.  I try to contribute to class discussions as much as I can.  I helped contribute to explaining the procedure ad conclusion.  I shared ideas to my partners for what we should do, what supplies we should get and how the experiment will go.

Ways I want to improve are, writing more about the conclusion and getting more involved with stuff like the group sway or power point presentations.
