Assignment 2 – Digital Referencing and Citations
“Orange Shirt Society”
What is Orange Shirt Day and why is it important?
Orange shirt day is an important day because it is a day to honour everyone who suffered for us and that is something to take some time and learn a little more about. I personally am very grateful that I don’t have to go through all of that pain and not have the ability to see my friends and family. I think that everyone should be a little more grateful to everyone who suffered for us. I intend to research the history and learn about them and I encourage you to do the same!

“Measuring Progress”
Canada’s progress in addressing the 94 calls to action:
The number of Calls to Action that Canada has completed has increased from a total of 8 in 2018 to 9 in 2019, according to our study of the country’s progress toward fulfilling the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action. This is consistent with previous years when progress has been slow. Although they have done quite a bit of work towards the 94 calls to action, there is still more and until they are all completed, it’s not good enough. at this rate, they should be done close too soon. But, it depends if they can complete the ones that take longer because they all take different time lengths. I think that they should be done soon, but I could be wrong.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Why and when was National Truth and Reconciliation Day established?
National truth and reconciliation day was established because one of the residential school survivors Phyllis Webstad, decided to make a campaign for it. The government saw it and decided to make it a national holiday to learn in order to pay respect to survivors, their families, and communities, and to make sure that public remembrance of the history and legacy of residential schools continues to be an essential part of the reconciliation process. It was created last year in June as a federal statutory day, so that’s June 2021 which is pretty recent, it was decided to be on September 30th.

What is Call to Action #63 iii? How does this assignment help you build “your capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect?”
Call the action Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect. This assignment helps me build my capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect because researching something makes you understand it better and respect it because then you learn what they went through. personally, when I research things I respect them more because when I know what someone had to go through, I think to myself, what would I would have done and then I respect it because I know the background story.

What is one thing you learned about the Kwikwetlem Nation and our shared land?
One thing that I learned from this video is that the word kwikwetlem actually means red fish up the water. I thought it just meant the name of the place I’m pretty sure that’s what Coquitlam means, but I’m not sure. Another thing that I learned is that the name kwikwetlem was changed to Coquitlam because it was hard to pronounce. Overall I learned quite a bit from this video.

What did you learn about the Kwikwetlem Nation’s language hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓?
I learned that it is quite like the English language, with some different letters and pronunciations. for someone who can only speak English, it is kind of hard the first few times, but, then it gets easier and I am able to pronounce it. I think that it’s a little hard to pronounce, but I think that it is a good language because it’s very unique and different from any other language. it is kind of like a variation of English, or should I say that English is a variation of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language. Overall I find it quite remarkable how they created such a language and then how it was varied to the language most people know which is English.
