Wood bug project

Science Lab – Pill Bugs-1mhxf7t

REFLECTION PARAGRAPH

In science class we did a project on wood bugs. We had to come up with an experiment and Aly, Jacob and I decided to do a “grass or apple”. We put the wood bug in the middle of the two to decide which side the wood bug chooses. Communication: We decided to use a power point presentation to show our learning. Our experience was very challenging because the wood bug usually wouldn’t move for 1-2 minutes when we would first place it down, so  we had to tap it with a pen to get it moving and the wood bugs almost always went towards and under the grass for “protection”. The experiment was very exciting because when we would tap the wood bugs the would run very fast towards the grass. There were no drawbacks while using the power point presentation. Critical Thinking: We made an ethical judgement because the wood bugs always went to the grass because they were scared, but after they felt safe they would crawl under the paper towel to get to the apples, so we think that they might have chosen apples if we didn’t touch them. I learned how to infer a situation because my group and I think that the wood bugs were scared when they made the decision to run towards the grass first. Creative Thinking: We generated this idea by brain storming using a mind map to come up with the experiment. We used a shoebox as the box as the boarders and I paper towel as the ground which created a home for the wood bugs. I came up with these ideas from smaller ideas, I would start with one small thought then try to add on to it until I am confident. Positive Personal and Cultural Identity:  I learned that there is more in life then just electronics and it made me realize that we aren’t the only species living on this planet, the wood bugs and others are the ones that are really working hard for everything to be able to survive and then theres me who just relies on my family to keep me healthy and able to survive. This changes my point of view on everything in the world because when I look at anything I can now realize how much time and effort there was put into making or working for what ever the object is. Personal Awareness and Responsibility: I learned a new skill during this project and it is, “Sometimes somethings just take some time”. I learned to set more goals and to think of different ways to achieve them while doing this project. Social Responsibility: I am now a lot more a appreciative and helpful for my family friends and my community just by witnessing the wood bugs working so hard for so little things.
