Digital Footprint:
Your Digital footprint can have a big impact on many of your future opportunities. For example, it can heavily influence employers when you are applying for jobs. According to a video produced NBC, approximately 70% of companies will now search all candidates names in the internet. This means that if a candidate has left behind a bad digital footprint, such as inappropriate photos or racial comments, the company will be able to uncover all of this information.
Your digital foot print can also impact you when you re applying for universities. For example, when apply to a university, they may choose to search your name up in the internet. If you left a bad digital foot print, the school will be able to find out all of this information, and they may choose to not accept you into their school. A similar scenario actually happened to a football player named Yuri Wright. Yuri was supposed to attend the University of Michigan, however when the discovered his racial tweets, they decided to take his scholar ship away.
There are many ways to keep your digital footprint safe and appropriate. One of these ways is to manage your network. This means that you should control what people can see what you can post. One example of this is that you could make your Instagram account private, which means only the people you allow will be able to see your posts.
Another way to keep your digital profile safe is to filter what you put on the internet. When posting things online you must always be protective and selective. Before you post ask yourself these questions:
Is what I’m posting appropriate?
Am I posting in anger?
Could someone feel disrespected?
Who might be able to read this?
If someone were to write something negative about you online, you should always defend your reputation. You can do this by contacting the person and asking them to remove that comment and to also refrain from posting and other negative comments. By doing this you are protecting your digital footprint because you are minimizing any potentially inappropriate comments that involve you.
Through my research I have learned lots of useful information about digital footprints. For example I learned all the things that are impacted by my digital foot print, and I also learned how to protect my digital foot print. There are multiple ways I could give this useful information to my peers. One of the ways is that I could introduce students to this blog. Another way is that if I see someone not keeping their digital footprint appropriate or safe, I could also pass all this information onto that person.
