Acts of Rememberence

This is a painting of Flanders Fields in Belgium during the First World War. Many Canadians sacrificed their lives during the “Great War” as part of the Commonwealth, fighting the Axis of evil.  Many people know of the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” and also know that poppies grow there where thousands of brave are buried.  Poppies are very important to our society and veterans. They are meant to be worn to remember all the soldiers that sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms and to help people that were being ruled by cruel and harsh leaders like Adolf Hitler or Saddam Hussein. We remember these soldiers with solitude on November 11th at eleven o clock every year. November 11th is a very important date in our society as that is the date the Armistice was signed by the Germans, French and the British that put an end at World War I. November 11th however is not just a time to remember the soldiers of World War I.  It is a time for all of us to give remembrance and gratitude to all soldiers, even those that are serving in the military today.  This is very important to me and it is important that we never forget the history or we might make the same awful mistakes of the past.

This is a famous quote from Mother Teresa saying that everyone one of us can do great things, we just need to find it in us. During her life, she devoted all her time and energy to helping the poor, the sick, the needy, and the helpless. Mother Teresa never judged people by their skin tone or even their culture. She lived in India most of her life and even though she was Christian she often wore Indian saris and went to mosques to show her respect for people of all cultures.  In 1979 mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to end world poverty. She didn’t show up for the ceremony were she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize but asked that $192,000 would be donated to the poor.  This selfless act sums up what kind of person she was.  Another famous quote from her is “the hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread”. This means that the most important thing for people is to love and care for each other.  Mother Teresa had a major influence on our society showing that we need to take care of each other and that we are a better society when we do this. Another big impact she had was on the rights of women.  Mother Teresa lived much of her life in a society where women weren’t treated the same as men.  She proved that women can accomplish anything by winning many prizes such as a Noble Peace Prize, Templeton Prize, Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and much more.
