A language is something used for various objectives. While you can use it for communication purposes, it is truly the artistic and creative side of the language that brings it to life. Subjects like math help your brain grow, but English is like soul food. The use of figurative devices is a gateway to connect literature to the outside world and it appeals to our senses while creating vivid images. This is where I want to improve—my usage of figurative language. To improve this, I want to read different forms of literature, such as short stories from Edgar Allen Poe, poems composed by Dylan Thomas, and plays written by Shakespeare. When I can interpret these texts, I can attempt to use them to strengthen my writing. Increasing my vocabulary is something I also want to achieve this year. As I am in grade 10, I need to use grade 10 vocabulary and refrain from using simplistic words. This would add on to my writing’s sophistication as well as conveying images to the reader better. English is a unique subject, unlike sciences and mathematics. It relieves my brain from stress and acts like a 15-minute break for a cashier. All in all, using figurative language, and increasing my vocabulary are goals I want to achieve this year in English.
