Orange shirt day is important as it is an opportunity to reflect and acknowledge what was lost and what still needs to be done. By wearing an orange shirt, one can show support. It is important to do our part as there is still lots to be done and it can’t be done without support.

The image above shows what is being done and what is not when it comes to the ninety- four calls to action. These statistics are shocking and frankly upsetting. Out of all of the ninety-four calls to action, only thirteen have been completed. This just shows how important it is for attention to be brought to issues as such. Nineteen calls to action have not been started or initiated. I hope that more people see how many have not been completed and start spreading the message as this is a less known issue in Canada.

The national day for truth and reconciliation was established in June 2021 and was set to be on September 30th. It is a national day to remember and mourn the lives that were lost and to acknowledge those that survived as well as understand our country’s past.

Calls to action number 63 discusses building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect. This assignment helps me do this as I have numerous opportunities to learn and understand as well as build understanding and respect for intercultural issues, such as the lack of work that is being done for the 94 calls to action. It is important to do this as intercultural issues are becoming more and more common in the world today.

The name, Kwikwetlem means “red fish up the river”. The name came to be as there was once a time where there were so many fish in the Fraser River, it appeared to be red. When settlers came, they were unable to pronounce Kwikwetlem, so they changed it to Coquitlam as it was easier to spell and pronounce. The landscape was drastically changed over the years because of the large dam that was instituted, causing transportation and food to be hard to come by. In the past, they would live in trailers and food and shelter security was not in the picture as they were relocated away from their homes. As the times begin to change, the Kwikwetlem people are now starting to be given back what was taken as well as what is deserved.
