Hypothesis
Our hypothesis Is that the wood bugs are going to eat the apples. The reason we chose this hypothesis is because the chance of finding a potato in the nature is very low but there could be a piece of an apple that someone threw away. So the wood bugs are more familiar to apples and they’re going to eat the apple.
Observation page
Wood bugs live under wood logs and damp and dark areas. They live there all four seasons and Vancouver is a perfect home for them.
Materials list:
- Cardboard box (big enough for 5-10 wood bugs)
- Wet paper towels (enough to cover the bottom of the container)
- 3 yam pieces (1cm by 1cm pieces)
- 3 apple pieces (1cm by 1cm pieces)
- Tape (to connect the folder to the container and cover holes in the box)
- 9 wood bugs
Procedure:
- set up your “shelter” by placing wet paper towels on the bottom of the box for moistness.
- on one side of the box, put cut up pieces of an apple
- on the other side put up cut up pieces of a potato
- In the middle of the box, put 2 of your dividers up
- Once everything is set, place your wood bugs in the middle 2 at a time
- When the wood bugs have chosen their side, take them out of the box
- record the data
- Repeat the last three steps until all of the wood bugs have been place
Qualitative observations:
- Not many woodbugs went for the food, most of them just ran around it
- They ran around the outside of the box, rather than the inside
- We had 2 different kinds of woodbugs (the ones that roll into a ball, and the ones that can’t) and the woodbugs that don’t roll into a ball were the ones that went for the food
