Take Your Kid to Work Day 2018

My Ideal School (Alternate Assignment)

During my time in Heritage Woods Secondary, I realized a lot of things about High School. My experience with High School so far has been mostly positive. I like most of my classes, enjoy the food provided by the Cafeteria, and all the teachers and students that I have interacted with thus far have been nice and friendly towards me. Overall, I would say that my experience with Heritage so far, has been positive. However, although the school and its community has been great overall, there are still a few things I would change about Heritage.

In this assignment, I will describe in detail what aspects of Heritage I would change such as building design, different courses and different learning styles. One of the first things I would change about Heritage, is their building design. Although some parts of the school look sleek and modern surrounded by glass and smooth concrete, the other half of the building looks very odd. To be specific, although the concrete design goes well when paired together with glass, the other half of the building exterior does not seem to have any windows and resembles a giant concrete block. If I could change one thing about the other side, I would definitely add more windows and glass to the exterior to carry over the design theme and make the whole building more welcoming.

The other changes that I would make, will focus more on the educational aspect of Heritage. One of my first complaints is our schedule. Although the schedule may seem balanced at first, it is obvious that some courses do not require a whole block to finish and usually leads to time being wasted. In my opinion, individual courses should be tailored to the student’s needs and preferences, to not only free up more time for FLEX and clubs (of his or her interest) but to allow students to be more in-control of what they learn and to focus more on their strengths. FLEX being lengthened will also help students since they can focus on their work in a more work oriented environment with little to no distractions. This also leads to my next point which is the different styles in our learning. I believe students should get more choices when learning and if FLEX time is increased then students will be able to focus on their subjects that they truly enjoy or are strong in giving them a clearer path for future careers and preparing to be independent managing their own time and their interests.

I think if these factors are changed in Heritage Woods, students will have more fun learning and will be more relaxed in school. Furthermore, if students were to focus their time at school on individual strengths and not have their time split by unnecessary or uninterested subjects, they would be less inclined to be distracted and be more passionate and efficient. An increase in FLEX time will teach them time management, and force them to rely more on themselves rather than others. In conclusion, although I have some complaints about how our school operates, I am still grateful of their services and staff.
