Hi, my name is Brandon and I was born on June, 11 2004 in Canada. When I was little I moved to Seoul, South Korea to live closer to my GrandParents. While I was living in Korea I went to an elementary school that was near our family’s apartment. Then when I was in grade three I moved back to Canada and started attending Hampton Park Elementary School. I went to Summit Middle School after, graduated, then moved here, to Heritage Woods. My favourite sports are, Soccer, Basketball and Dodge Ball. I also like to play games on my PS4 when I have spare time. One of my favourite games on the PS4 that I enjoy frequently is a FPS game called Overwatch. I like Overwatch because unlike many traditional Fps games, Overwatch requires teamwork and coordination to achieve victory. Two of my future goals is to build a PC and to visit New York. I want to visit New York because I want to look at some of the most famous buildings and to study their culture.
I chose this video because when I saw this video for the first time it was one of the most funniest things I saw on the internet. I liked how the people in this video all interacted with one another and the jokes they made. There are a lot of jokes in this video that were funny. In my opinion, this video succeeds in combining the absurdity of the internet and the tradition form of comedy. Their channel produces videos that utilizes the combination of the two and their group is very consistent in providing the commentary and charisma. However, I think this is by far one of their best videos simply because of their own opinions and sense of humour. The images were also hilarious when combined with the jokes and I highly recommend watching this video.
One of my favourite websites to visit for entertainment and news is Reddit. I like Reddit because it keeps me updated with everything happening around the world and is known as the “Front Page of the Internet.” The way Reddit is designed helps to make the site interactive and personalized. To go into detail, one of the more simple yet affective feature on their site is the down/up voting system. This system may come across as simple and plain, but it goes far beyond the functionality of a like/dislike system. The voting system can determine how much an individuals vote is worth by using complex systems that analyze your experience on the site and interactions. This not only helps to prevent content from reaching traction by abusing the system, but also credits the posts that are deemed worthy. Sub-Reddits also are one of the most useful feature in the site. The Sub-Reddits are like a mini Reddit for the topic of your interest. For example, if you are interested in politics then you can join r/politics and be provided with your information and also interact with others that have the same interests as you. Due to all these wonderful features and their innovative voting system, I think Reddit is one of the greatest sites around today.
One of my favourite quotes of all time comes from a YouTube channel called exurb1a. The quote, ” Meaning is a Jumper (sweater) You Have to Knit Yourself,” is reflective of the world we live in today and how everyone strives for “meaning” in their lives. This quote is based on the ideas of neurologist Viktor Frankl which stated that all humans were creatures driven by purpose and meaning, we put our purpose in the world, and maintaining of our happiness above all, and if any of these were to be questioned or unclear then we become extremely depressed. The video states that for a great period of time a human’s basic need to achieve “happiness,” was to find food, water and avoiding death. When early civilization formed we answered the mystery of our existence with organized religion which gave our existence a sense of purpose and meaning. But recently things have gotten much more complicated. Advancements in technology, allows us to get food in grocery stores and access clean drinking water simply by turning a nob. The video points out that although long ago our purpose seemed to be worshiping a god of your choice and surviving, our worries in the present day seem to stem from a more complex problem. Exturb1a describes this as a shadow in the background of modern life which is our missing sense of meaning. Although we might try to seek meaning in our seemingly meaning less life, he and Viktor Frankl argue that truly no matter how rich or powerful you are, no own truly know what they are doing. We may strive to find the perfect universal formula for happiness like getting a good job, earning lots of money and buying property, there seems to be no simple formula for happiness in our modern world instead to achieve happiness we must knit our own meaning in life.
One image that impacted me the most is the Sword of Damocles. The image above depicts the story of Damocles and his king Dionysius. According to the story, Damocles was complementing Dionysius about his power and wealth and told him that he was envious of his privilege. Hearing this Dionysius offered to switch places with Damocles to give him a taste of power and magnificence. Damocles without batting an eye, quickly accepted the offer excited for his turn in power. Damocles sat down on the throne surrounded by luxury and wealth. This essentially “blinded” Damocles from reality and isolated him in a bubble. It is later revealed that a sword hanged above the throne tied to a single horse hair. The image symbolizes the danger of having power and being blinded by it. It shows how power can be like a drug, an being addicted to power can blind you from reality and influence your actions in a negative way. After the sword was revealed, Damocles begs Dionysius to switch roles once more realizing the anxiety and dangers of power. This picture has not only impacted me, but also taught me that with power come responsibility and great danger.
Brandon, I really like how you have integrated various media (video, images, links) into your post. You have done a very good job constructing your page and commenting about yourself and your interests whilst still being mindful of your online presence. Good work.
