I learned a lot during my time learning about the Rwandan Genocide during the last week or so. I have learned about the genocide itself, through guest speakers Elizabeth and Paul and through the film, Hotel Rwanda. It was very interesting learning about such a horrific and crazy event, all the carnage for no apparent reason. I also found it very inspiring how someone (in this case Paul Rusesabagina) could be so brave and selfless to put many peoples lives before their own in order to protect them. Paul put his life on the line during the treacherous days of the genocide just to take care of and save as many people as possible. We also had a two guest speakers, Elizabeth and her husband, Paul. Elizabeth told us a bit about Rwanda itself, the landscape and more. I found the landscape and the other facts about Rwanda very interesting because I had not known anything about the country before hand. She also spoke about her experiences in Rwanda while the genocide was happening. At the end, she spoke about her interactions later in life with a man that she had known to have killed many of her peers and some of her family members. She said that she was able to not forget, but forgive him, as he was only 12 years of age when he was doing this killing. I personally would probably never be able to forgive someone that did this but I find it really inspiring that she was able to do so. Finally, the lady talked about a foundation that she and her husband had started that acted like a sort of charity for Rwanda. This foundation started years back, and has created many schools, hospitals libraries and more in Rwanda to better the all around life for children and for everyone. I find this really inspiring, considering that she did not need to do any of this, especially not after what she had experienced, but she did it anyway to better the lives of others. After learning about the genocide, I have grown to appreciate the country that I live and the life I live within it even more, and I am also very inspired by the actions of a guy like Paul Rusesabagina and a woman like our guest speaker Elizabeth.
