I can acquire information using the tools provided to me by our glorious benefactors. Every day, I am challenged by the teachers to use my full potential when it comes to consuming and regurgitating information for the purpose of standardized education to breed punctual, docile, and sober factory workers.
Thinking:
Reflecting and assessing
This glorious novella is proof as to how I can reflect and assess myself and others in a concise and effective manner. Case in point.
Personal Awareness and Responsibility:
Well-being
I don’t know what well-being means in this context, but I’m gonna say that I do it anyway. I receive all my vaccines, I do my dental checkups, I pay my taxes, I am truly an educated citizen.
What’s up guys, massive failure here, back with another bad project. First off, we had to use Communication to Collaborate to Plan. We established a chat room to communicate with each other over the weekend, met in a super secret location over lunch, and practiced our lines religiously. And you know what? We failed. Hard. A couple of us flubbed our lines, costing us the precious time that we went over. I don’t remember if I myself flubbed any lines, I think I didn’t but our memory can deceive us. Just like we failed to deceive the audience with our costumes. (Great segue, I know) Even if we did have bad costumes, we still used Creative thinking to develop and design ideas, in designing our costumes. We may have failed, but at least we tried our best. And we all know that’s what matters. Especially in a working environment. Boss trying to fire you for poor results? just say you tried your hardest. Now to talk about the hardest part close to me. Memorizing the lines. This was hard because my memory is very bad. Imagine bad memory, but worse. Then a bit better because I exaggerate it, but we can sweep that under the rug. What I did to FORCE myself to etch the lines into my brain, was employ, Self-Regulation, and Determination (under Personal Awareness). I trained like the samurai (a lil exaggerated but close enough), to scrape the lines into the inside of my skull. I passed over trivial things going outside and having the rays of the sun permeate my pores, to ace this performance. And then I forgot a couple and (pooooosibly) ad-libbed them during the actual performance. As the universe must come to eventual heat death, I too, must complete this soliloquy to the stars. During this monologue, I have used Critical Thinking (Analyze and Critique) to reflect on my past mistakes (narrowed down to specifically this play), to show that no matter how bad the final result may be, I can still learn and develop skills associated with the Core Competencies. As the half-multi-coloured, not so badly translated Monokubs say, “Good bye, bear well.”
In this epic video, me and my compadre Justin used some sick core competencies we used some critical thinking skills. We had to develop and design the diagrams used to show our knowledge of meiosis to our teacher. The proccess began we me going to a large tub of left-over arts and crafts supplies. Then, we honed our craft by repeatedly (twice) looking for the most optimal configuration of string and playing cards to TRULY show that we can copy off of the notes. But, with a twist befitting of M Night Shyamalan, we committed the most dire of mistakes. We didn’t show the playing cards in a parralel configuration during Metaphase 2. Doesn’t sound very di moltobene. You know what other core competency we used? No? Well we communicated. Between ourselves. Epic. By communication, of course, I mean that i brow beat Justin into recording his lines, even though I was also extremely late. At least I was done earlier than him. We also had to use communication to write and record the audio explaining what this mess of shapes actually means. Turns out, it’s not that easy to write a cler, concise, and well worded explenation of something. Not really, because we (once again) just had to re-arrange the words in the notes, but I need to make it seem like we learned something other than the actual subject matter. Let’s hope this is enough detail, because there isn’t more to give.
The process of writing this stain was an interesting one. I started with a concept I had from a nightmare. Now, I improved a decent amount in my writing skills. With the help of Ragnar critiquing me, I managed to look at my writing in a more objective way. This helped with editing, even if the underlying story is still a little bad. I tried my hardest to diligently write a story, faking as much passion as possible as I went. Writing in this way seemed to improve the overall quality of the product. At this point, you may be wondering what I think of my story. I think it was “meh”. Other than the fact that the edge concentration is so high I might keel over and die of dysentery from it, I think it is a semi-decently written Short story. Now, there are 2 parts to this. A written story, and my narration. If you value your sanity and anything you hold dear, don’t listen to it. Please. It is terrible. It is the culmination of me being tired at 6 am trying not to wake up my family and subject them to such torture. This is a definite minus to my social responsibility skills, specifically “contributing to family wellness”. While recording this I became physically and mentally exhausted. I was sure at one point I would just start coughing without being able to finish. This is more of a warning than a reflection. If you value anything, stay away from this edgy mess.
While working in the group we chose, I did my share. I contributed a sizable chunk towards the ultimate success of our objectives posed by the teacher to our band of merry children cohorting together to achieve a common goal. In this area of the communication core competency, I have gotten better at absolutly nothing. The reason for this, is because no outstanding challenge was posed in talking to 3 group members about how to measure heart rate. I also presented the information gathered in this experiment in a clear and concise way, using my group members to help out when I needed feedback on the presentation of the document. These two occurences signify a use of the communication core competency. They represent my learning over this school year, and my lack of learning (in context of core competencies, I learned from the actual science that was excerised during this lab) during this specific instance.

First Impressions of the Cuban Revolution – NT
1) The Cuban Revolution was caused by rebellious government party called 26th of July movement which was led by Fidel Castro and his allies against the autocratic government president Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar. The revolution started in July 1953 and lasted until they expelled the Batista on December 31, 1959 replacing his government with the revolutionary socialist state. July 26, 1959 is celebrated as the day of the revolution. Later in October 1965 the 26th of July movement reformed along communist lines and becoming the communist party. Before the government was overthrown an attack on the Moncada barracks which started in 26 July 1953 and ended on 1 January 1959. Moncada barracks is a military barrack named after a Guillermón Moncada a general and a war hero of the Cuban war. When Batista left the country Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba where captured by the rebels which were led by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro’s surrogates Raúl Castro and Huber Matos. After the attack on Moncada barracks the person that led the attack ‘Fidel Castro was taken into court to make his defense case and this is where the “History will absolve me “speech was made for his defense speech and was labeled as the manifesto of 26 of July movement. An important event was the Granma, the Granma was a yacht that was used to transport 82 soldiers from Mexico to Cuba in November 1956 to overflow Fulgencio Batista. The yacht is 60-foot boat made in 1943. Operation Verano was an offensive attack on Fidel Castro by Batista to stop him in growing in strength and size in his repel army. The attack was a failure and they attempted multiple times and the noticeable battles were the Battle of La Plata and Battle las Mercedes. These battles were such failures that it dispirited and disheartened the army and Castro took advantage of this situation and went to offense against Batista and counted the disheartened army as a victory. Battle of La Plata was said earlier but wasn’t explained of what happened, it was a compound plan and the plan was to attack Castros mountain base on the Sierra Maestra. This was such a big failure that the remaining soldiers surrendered, and the rest of soldiers were killed, captured or wounded and that was about 500 Cuban army soldiers. The battle of Las Mercedes was also talked about earlier and was the last battle in the Operation Verano. What happened was the Cuban army made a trap for Castros guerillas and in the end, it ended with a cease fire suggested by Castro and Castro and his guerillas went back into the woods and the army went back home dispirited and disheartened and Castros army took that as a win. The battle of Yaguajay was not talked about earlier but was a battle with the Castro and Batista and once again a big failure for the Cuban army as the Revolutionaries won the battle. This battle wasn’t as big and noticeable as the others but still big and it still happened whether it was important or not. Battle of Santa Clara was an important battle as it led to Batista leaving the country and Castro taking control of the country. What happened was they battled for the control of Santa Clara and they battle was drastic and later became a victory for the rebels and was a deciding victory. Within twelve hours of the capture of Santa Clara, Batista left the country and Castro took over. All pf this was how the revolution started and the important events that happened and how the revolution took over, now what I think of the revolution was that I think it needed to happen and that it made Cuba what it is today and I think if the revolution didn’t happen that the country would be way more worse and dangerous. I also wonder what would of happened if Castro and Batista and controlled the country together? Would that make a big change? I think it would change a lot of things as they had different ideas of what to do with the country and if they worked together they probably could of made an amazing country.
Letter to Castro – NT
Hi Mr. Castro, my name is Nathan Thrift I am a member of the lowest class of society and we as a group see this as an opportunity for us to get off the streets and to turn our lives around. Most of our society is living on the streets or living in unsafe or unreliable homes that are small or don’t have the right makings for the house. Most of us are also parents or have a family living with us and the homes we live in aren’t the best for us, our food and money income isn’t the good either as most of us don’t have jobs or don’t make enough money to supply for our family. We also get treated like the crap living on the side of the street that everybody walks or drives over and doesn’t give a crap. The education that we have here in Cuba is a privilege and only the people with money can get an education and the rest are to be stupid or teach themselves somehow. We thank you for bringing on the revolution and changing the government. As this is all happening, I would like to ask you a minor favor that you would change the living conditions for our society and the income we all make. We would also like you to make education free for everyone and to make it possible for everyone to get a job. I would also like to ask you that you make work and home conditions safe and good. I would like to see these changes happen soon because they are important to us as it will change everyone’s lives. Thank you for listening to my letter and thank you for making these changes and thank you for everything else.

Video Interview – DH

Civil unrest was quite high when Castro landed in eastern Cuba after exile. From that point, the citizens were fighting a virtual civil war, with occasional raids and such. At one point a bunch of students attacked the presidential palace in Havana. As a result of all the violence, the US suspended the delivery of arms to the Cuban government. Castro’s militia decimated the Cuban army, with them being weakened due to the embargo and also from the general violence. Batista got exiled to Portugal, and left the country to his commander in chief in the army. Castro didn’t like that, so Che Guevera led some rebel forces into Havana and stopped that. Castro became Prime Minister after that.
One of the groups who supported Batista was the US. The reason they supported Batista was because they didn’t like their mortal enemy, Communism. And the soviet union, but that came with communism back then so I guess they’re one and the same.
On 26th July 1953, about 140 rebels attacked the Moncada Barracks. Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro were among the rebels. Many rebels were killed but the Castro brothers were captured. This was significant to Cuba and Fidel because his trial was turned into a media spectacle. This was important because Fidel took this golden opportunity to perform his famous “History Will Absolve Me” speech so that the government and the Cuban people would hear his point.
What Fidel Castro meant by “History Will Absolve Me” was that people would remember him as a hero rather than a terrorist. The reason they would remember him as a hero was because he pledged to revolt against the oppressive government and bring equality the people of Cuba.
After the accession to power, Castro’s government conducted trials of former members of the Batista dictatorship. He also nationalized commerce and industry, and made healthcare and education free. Castro signed a trade agreement with the USSR for oil in exchange of Cuban sugar. He took over US-owned plantations and factories, making the US impose an economic embargo with Cuba. In 1960 he started a campaign to eliminate illiteracy, which lowered illiteracy rates from 23% to 4%.
The US, in fact, was not very happy with communism coming to a neighboring country. In 1961 the CIA trained and financed 1500 Cuban exiles. They then launched an invasion in the Bay of Pigs. It failed. Miserably. As a result of this, Castro became closer with the soviet union. The reason the US cared so deeply was that if they were communist, they probably were in bed with the Soviet leaders. And this was demonstrated during the 13 days of terror known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. Basically, the Soviet Union put nukes onto Cuba, as retaliation for the nukes the US planted in turkey. In the end, the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles in Cuba in return for the US removing the missiles in Turkey.
Some great achievements of the Cuban revolution were the reduction of the illiteracy rate, free education, free healthcare, and replaced an oppressive government led by Batista. There were a lot of bad things too, however. Castro’s government was poor, forcing them to take land from people, new and higher taxes, and controlling foreign exchange. Cuba’s economy was terrible, with high unemployment. The situation worsened, as prices for Cuban exports such as tobacco and sugar plummeted. In the end, the question of if Cuba would be better off today if Castro never gained power is a hard one. It seems like while the Castro regime introduced some good things for Cuba, it still just oppressed people some more. I think it depends. If the revolution never happened, then Batista could have started a dictatorship that could have lasted for decades. Without intervention, this would become worse than Castro’s regime. But if the US (specifically the CIA) toppled the regime sometime after the soviet union fell, they could install someone who might be better. Or might not be. But it is all up to chance.

The industrial revolution, while a time of economic boom and leaps in innovation, was also hard on the average working class citizens, including children. This topic taught me the process that many great innovations we take granted on a daily basis took to actually be invented. I learned the many economic and resource reasons that such a revolution would happen, and I learned about the hardships that the average working class received during this time. The “Social Responsibility” core competency would fit in nicely here as they should not have hired children to do manual labour, giving them debilitating injuries for life, and instead hired more adult people like women without jobs due to the crash of the cabin industry. In the end, I have learned about another important event in history that changed the world, to shape it into what it is today.
The Rwandan Genocide was a terrible tragedy that befell the people of Rwanda in 1994. Through this presentation, I have learned to understand the terrible situation that played out in Rwanda. My heart was shattered to hear about all the brutal killings that took place. From this, I have learned to never take my life for granted. I will pledge to help build the school by donating to Grace. If we all band together to help Rwanda, we can kickstart social change. In the end, I have learned many lessons from this presentation, like how I should make friends and extend the courtesy of niceness to everyone.
I did a decent job working with my bad microphone and worse background noise, so I think I’m satisfied. I supplied the SFX (by downloading them of course), and lent my amazing voice. Personally, I think Rowan did great, the editing was good and the script we worked on was good.
What I could do better:
I could have answered my emails from rowan faster. Also could have not stuttered and pronounced stuff better when recording. We could have made a more informative script, instead of just focusing on the fun aspect of it, but I still believe we adequately expressed the information contained within the script.
