Core Competency Self-Assessment

For my Core Competency Self-Assessment I will be writing a story for each of my strengths in Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social responsibility.

For the Communication Competency Collaboration has always been one of my strong assets. During  the 1’st quarter of this school year, I was in a group of 4 for a project in Career class. We formed a group together because we each shared the same value of being strong feminist. We worked together to create a big project called the YPI (Youth and Philanthropy Initiative) where we help raise more awareness about a specific small charity, show the importance of it, and possibly earn it a grand winning. My group and I worked hard and collaborated through texts and in person. We discussed how we were going to “wow” the audience and present an impactful presentation. We listened to each others ideas and allowed each other to have a voice in the group. I made sure that I discussed my concerns and ideas with the group and did my best to help everyone with what they were doing. We worked on many online documents, added our work to it and even helped find some valuable information for the each other (e.g good websites). Each group member was very hard working and was dedicated to their role, which allowed us to form a very well done presentation. We were able to make a good presentation because we planned things out all together and felt safe to share our thoughts.

For the Thinking Competency I will use the Critical and Reflective thinking CC. During the 1’st quarter of this school year, I was given a project to do in Social Studies. I was assigned a project where I had to make a mind map about the First War. I had a question in the center saying “Does the Land you Live on Indicate the amount of Power you Hold?” and I had to connect the ideas of Identity, Power and Land to that question. I began this project by writing down all the connections the war had with those 3 different words. I made sure I connected those words to together (e.g in battle the more LAND taken the more POWER) and use as much contexts as possible. I used contexts about how different things were effected in the war such as the government, people/countries, soldiers, and ect. After getting the information I needed, I drew out the mind map and wrote down everything. I also added a few drawings to have visuals (this adds a little of creative thinking) and I used highlighter colours and lines to show the connections between things and whether I was trying to connect things or not. Through out this project I faced a few challenges, but I made sure that I remained persistent and didn’t back away. I used different strategies to find information, I made sure my work is accurate and asked for help when I needed to.

For the Personal and Social Competency I will use Personal Awareness and Responsibility and I will be writing this story slightly differently from the first 2. This story goes all the way back into elementary school. I was in 4’th grade when I was going to have a quiz. During that time I wouldn’t study for tests/quizzes because I never thought I needed to. However, this time I DIDN’T realize how much I did need to. I remember feeling very unsure of myself during the quiz and once I received it back a few days later I learned that I did not do well. I was very upset that day and I couldn’t believe that I got such a low mark. After that I have learned that studying is important and it has become a huge aspect for me to get ready for tests/quizzes. This story has also taught me that I will make mistakes in life and that I shouldn’t beat myself up for it, but instead learn from it. Now, I still need to work on this, although I have become more confident in myself and I let myself make mistakes and grow from them. I have been stepping outside of my boundaries (e.g Musical Theatre), making sure I try my best and as long as I do, I learn to be happy with my it!

My Reflection

In this reflection I will be talking about the Core Competency Critical Thinking. I believe have shown a lot of Critical Thinking through the process of making this project. I used the criteria and annualized what was needed to make this project up to the standards. For example:

  • I looked through the examples given and used what was written to strengthen my writing
  • I read through the format details and made sure I was putting in all the information that was required for this project
  • I also highlighted the things that I have done already and didn’t highlight the things that I still needed to work on

Through the development of my project, I also had my family members look at my work. I would tell them what they were looking for (A brochure that intrigued them to read the book I have chosen) and to help me with spelling mistakes or errors. This was very helpful because having more then one person look at the assignment will bring a better understanding for other people to read.

When I was gathering information I went to many sources and brought them together to know the credibility of each one. When I did this, it allowed me to know when some information is incorrect or not useful, including many other things I needed to know. For example:

  • If I saw specific information about the author I would make sure the other site would have the same information
  • If one site has information I need, but not all of it another site might fill in the blanks
  • If a site had good information, but I couldn’t understand it I can use another to help me unfold the confusion

When I am looking through websites I know the difference between facts, beliefs, and opinions. I know this by reading what the website has and by looking at specific words they use like for example, “I think” or “I believe”. Those words are opinionated, however when they use other words like this, “this is” or “based on an interview”, is when you know they are true facts. In order to know your information is valid is to have many sites proving that it is, that it is not someones opinion, seeing when it was published, and if the website is made by a reliable company or group. This required Critical Thinking because you have to make sure the things you are looking at are reliable by using special techniques.

For the creation of the brochure I had to make sure it looked intriguing to read. So, in order to succeed in that, I have to choose the right colours and the right photos. For the colour I chose many shades of blue. Blue is a very formal colour and makes the brochure look professional and interesting. With the photos I have to choose the right ones and put them in the right place. The three photos I have chosen are:

  • A drawing of the main character “Adelina Amouteru” to be on the top right side of the brochure where the character analyses is, so it could represent it
  • A photo of the author “Marie Lu” and put it is right next the author biography
  • The third photo I have selected is the map of Estenzia (The map of the setting in the book) Right on the bottom of the second page.

This required Critical Thinking because you have to know the right images to fit the concept of the whole brochure and the information that they are representing.

This assignment took a lot of thinking, making this reflection easy to write about. I know that when I use Critical Thinking I must dig deep into things that are very important and to focus on the detail to the assignment. I know that paying attention to the criteria will bring me very far in what I am supposed to do. If I continue using Critical Thinking I will be able to do well with many of my assignments in the future. What I do need to work on is organizing my work so I could get things done easily. Here are ways I could do that:

  • I could create my own planner and write important things down
  • I could “schedule” different classes through out the day so I wont get overwhelmed
  • I could do the important things first and less important things after

If I start to do those things I will be able to keep up to date with my classes without getting stressed. This will help me make sure I try my very best on assignments and projects. With this growth I can do better in my classes and it will develop my strengths in my Core Competencies.

Thank you for reading!

Digital literacy Self Reflection

On this reflection I will be explaining how my partner and I have used the Core Competency Communication. We both used good communication skills within this project. We listened to each other’s ideas and wrote it down on a piece of paper. We discussed about whether an idea is good or bad, with respect and politeness. For example:

  • When we didn’t agree on something, we talked through it.
  • When one of us had a question, we answered it without judgement.
  • We both talked to each other before doing anything.

We made sure that we listened carefully to one another and didn’t get distracted by things. When we did, we had a stronger project because we were able to collaborate our ideas with understanding. When we express our ideas, we can add on to it and create an even bigger idea. We both were engaged and concentrated on our project which helped us get a good outcome.

When we had idea’s, we were able to clearly express them. We would give examples and aim to make the idea easily explained. Three of the many things we did to convey our thoughts were:

  • Drawing our idea.
  • Tell it step by step.
  • Explain the idea thoroughly.

We found drawing our ideas was the best strategy. The reason why is because we were able to visually describe our ideas. Our project was a poster, which is a very visual assignment. So, with the help of making a drawing, it will give us a sense of what we are thinking about.  Because of this it allowed us to interpret both of our views of the project together.

When we worked together, we made sure we had a fair share of work. We would each bring the poster home an equal amount. We told each other specific things to do when we worked on it at home. For example, we would say:

  • Work on the title.
  • Colour in the grass.
  • Add something more in this space of the poster.

During the weekend we collectively met up at the library to consult about the project. We would plan this by texting each other and asking each other when we are free. This was a very easy way in communicating what we needed to do. With technology it makes many things effortless when it came to asking a question or reminding each other things. I believe we worked very hard at this project and that we showed this competency very comprehensively.

This photo is blurry so I will write what it is saying in many places.

  • Underneath “it” it say “Is immortality worth it?” and “Cloning=Immortality”
  • Underneath “Hurts” “Immortality=Over-Population” “Over-Population=Global warming”
  • In the grass it says “the average temperature went up 1C. It already has effected us badly. If you support learning, you DON’T CARE about the importance of our planet”

American Revolution project

The Core Competency that I will be focusing on for this project will be Creative Thinking. I believe that my group and I have thoroughly shown this competency through out this project by helping each other think of new and fun ideas. We all discussed about what we can do and what would be entertaining. What we first did to help create this project, was make a story board. A story board is something that breaks down each shot in a film.

  • Each shot has two or more lines from the song/skit
  • The shot was matched with the line
  • On the story board each shot has a description

The story board helped us know exactly what we needed to do. Through out the project we made changes to help improve it. Most of the scenes we did were all about timing. What we did to help that was play the music while we are filming, so we can lip sync perfectly in line with the audio that will be playing!

The other things that required creativity, was where we were going to film and what props we were going to use. When we did our filming the first few shots were at school. After that we went to a place that had a pool over the weekend. The pool was a good aspect of the film because it represented the “ocean”. It helped us film our boat scene and tea dumping scene.

For this film we had to make lots of arts and crafts to help us do specific scenes for our project. For example:

  • The boat shot (card board paddles)
  • The dumping shot + One of the dancing shot (card board box)
  • The tax shot (paper)
  • The east Indian company shot (Checkers)
  • The 1773 shot (paper)

Before we filmed anything (when we were at the place with the pool), we built most of the props for the video. The main things we used were card board, paper, glue gun and paint. We used scissors to help us shape our objects and make it look like what we were creating it into. Here are the ways we made a few of our props:

the tea box was hot glued back together, had paper towels glued to it with the same colour tone, and painted the word tea in black paint. For the tax scene we cut out a crown and cut out “money” to visualize what the words were saying in the song. We also made card board paddles, by cutting out pieces from our own card board and hot glued it together. This shows creativity because we were creating our own things to make our scenes better. Without these props people wouldn’t of understood what would be happening the video.

The thing that I believe should be improved is the editing. We only had two days to edit the video and we were only able to edit it at school. Because of that, the video had quite a few errors. We weren’t able to do everything we wanted to with the video and some of the timing was off. For instance putting in effects, putting in extra scenes, or making sure the lip syncing is in line. Next time we will look ahead and see how much time we have for a project. How I will do that is by:

  • Seeing how many days I have in total
  • find out the due date right away
  • plan out when to do what

This project gave me a better understanding of making sure that I have the right amount of time and how well I can use it. For the most part my group and I conclude that we did a very good job overall and that we will keep up the good work.

Thank you for reading!

My Reflection

For the wood bug project, the competency I would like to focus on is Communication. Communication was a very important aspect of this project. It was very important because it involved working with partners. We had to work together to figure out what we were going to do and how we’re going to do it. Me and my partners each were able to share an equal amount of work by giving each other specific jobs. During the experiment we each made observations and compared our thoughts on what was happening and put them down into our notes. For example we talked about:

  • The number of wood bugs eating a specific food
  • What food was mainly being left out
  • Why the wood bugs would choose a food over the other

What also required communication was making predictions and discussing our results. Throughout those discussion we made sure each of us were able to talk and share their ideas. There was a lot of teamwork needed for this project and we each contributed our work.

Another thing that we did was help one another. What I mean by helping each other is:

  • We discussed how we should work out problems/obstacles
  • Give each other advice
  • Tell each other if one of us accidentally made a mistake

We also communicated through a group chat. The group chat was made so we can either ask a question or tell each other something important. When we assist each other, we cooperate by allowing opened questions. So, not yelling at our partners for saying a “stupid” question, but just reminding them the answer. We were able to have a good mark for this project, thanks to our teamwork and commitment to the project.

For what I needed to work on, on this competency was one thing. was having trouble controlling myself from talking. There would be times where I would start talking and I forget about the assignment. What I need to do to improve, is talk less and concentrate more on the project.  There are many ways to help myself improve this problem. For example:

  1. Try discussing more on the work either then other things
  2. If I get distracted by someone, I will end the conversation and continue my work
  3. Put on earbuds and listen to music, so I wont get sidetracked

However, I do make sure that when the teacher is talking or is teaching a new lesson I listen with full attention. In the future I will demonstrate my improvements by working as hard as I can and not distract my classmates.

Overall, I believe that I established a good representation of this core competency and I will further work on it as I go through the rest of high school

Musical Theater (Cheer Camp)

These are photos of me and my stunt group from Musical theater, performing and practicing. We have been practicing twice a week, since October. Most of the people that are in the stunt team (including me) have zero experience in doing cheer. We all had to learn how to cheer from scratch. There are different roles that are played within the stunt groups, there are the 2 bases, the back, the front, and the flyer. The bases are the people are holding the flyers feet and lifting them up. The back and the front are doing the same except they are not holding the feet, its either the ankles, knees, or the thighs. The flyer is the one who is being thrown. I play the role of the flyer. It is very thrilling/exciting to be launched and thrown through the air.

There are many different kinds of tricks that we have learned through out the many months. For example, smush-prep, smush-spin prep, cradle, basket, and torch. Smush-prep starts off at smush. Smush is the starting position where the whole group is squatting (either then the flyer) and are wating for the flyer to put their feet in their hands. Once that happens, I am able to be lifted and stand on the bases hands and and do a high B (my fist up), in the photos above you can see me in prep and in smush. Spin prep is the same thing, however when I am lifted up I am spun around and brought into a normal prep. Cradle is when I am thrown in a prep and I am caught by the bases, back, and front. Basket is when I am thrown without being in prep. Lastly torch, torch is the same thing as prep, however I am standing on one foot. Torch is the hardest stunt to do because it is very difficult to balance on one foot, while I am being lifted in the air. There are many other stunts that we can do and are planning to add to the show.

In Musical Theater we are practicing these stunts to do a musical called “Bring It On!”. Bring it on is all about cheer leading nationals and teenage drama. This allowed us to have the opportunity to learn how to do cheer stunts. In order to learn them we had to be taught by a cheer instructor. It was a Saturday evening and everybody who was willing to do cheer stunts came. We learned a lot of cool stunts that day, and found out the roles we would have. That was when I was given the role of a flyer which was very exciting because I wanted to be a flyer. After that we practiced and practiced, until we had actual performances. The performances were for the girls basketball team, the grade 8 tour, and the performing arts night.

We have been working very hard each week, during our lunches and we have been getting better and better. We started off in the mat room practicing, and now we are in the actual theater doing our routines. Soon we will be able to put them in the show and leave the audience in awe.
