For my Core Competency Self-Assessment I will be writing a story for each of my strengths in Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social responsibility.
For the Communication Competency Collaboration has always been one of my strong assets. During the 1’st quarter of this school year, I was in a group of 4 for a project in Career class. We formed a group together because we each shared the same value of being strong feminist. We worked together to create a big project called the YPI (Youth and Philanthropy Initiative) where we help raise more awareness about a specific small charity, show the importance of it, and possibly earn it a grand winning. My group and I worked hard and collaborated through texts and in person. We discussed how we were going to “wow” the audience and present an impactful presentation. We listened to each others ideas and allowed each other to have a voice in the group. I made sure that I discussed my concerns and ideas with the group and did my best to help everyone with what they were doing. We worked on many online documents, added our work to it and even helped find some valuable information for the each other (e.g good websites). Each group member was very hard working and was dedicated to their role, which allowed us to form a very well done presentation. We were able to make a good presentation because we planned things out all together and felt safe to share our thoughts.
For the Thinking Competency I will use the Critical and Reflective thinking CC. During the 1’st quarter of this school year, I was given a project to do in Social Studies. I was assigned a project where I had to make a mind map about the First War. I had a question in the center saying “Does the Land you Live on Indicate the amount of Power you Hold?” and I had to connect the ideas of Identity, Power and Land to that question. I began this project by writing down all the connections the war had with those 3 different words. I made sure I connected those words to together (e.g in battle the more LAND taken the more POWER) and use as much contexts as possible. I used contexts about how different things were effected in the war such as the government, people/countries, soldiers, and ect. After getting the information I needed, I drew out the mind map and wrote down everything. I also added a few drawings to have visuals (this adds a little of creative thinking) and I used highlighter colours and lines to show the connections between things and whether I was trying to connect things or not. Through out this project I faced a few challenges, but I made sure that I remained persistent and didn’t back away. I used different strategies to find information, I made sure my work is accurate and asked for help when I needed to.
For the Personal and Social Competency I will use Personal Awareness and Responsibility and I will be writing this story slightly differently from the first 2. This story goes all the way back into elementary school. I was in 4’th grade when I was going to have a quiz. During that time I wouldn’t study for tests/quizzes because I never thought I needed to. However, this time I DIDN’T realize how much I did need to. I remember feeling very unsure of myself during the quiz and once I received it back a few days later I learned that I did not do well. I was very upset that day and I couldn’t believe that I got such a low mark. After that I have learned that studying is important and it has become a huge aspect for me to get ready for tests/quizzes. This story has also taught me that I will make mistakes in life and that I shouldn’t beat myself up for it, but instead learn from it. Now, I still need to work on this, although I have become more confident in myself and I let myself make mistakes and grow from them. I have been stepping outside of my boundaries (e.g Musical Theatre), making sure I try my best and as long as I do, I learn to be happy with my it!
