Digital Literacy Support

Welcome to your Digital Portfolio at Heritage Woods Secondary. Heritage Woods is in the process of developing a unique and innovative digital culture for all of our students to learn in. Heritage Woods is transitioning to a 1:1 school whereby each and every student and staff member will use a device to further enhance teaching and learning, and most importantly, help prepare our students with tools and skills to be successful in their future endeavors.

In order to ensure the success of this program, and to help you develop your portfolio we have put in place a variety of support systems.

If you ever need assistance with technology or the maintenance of your blog you can email Mr. Aitken ( or Mr. Castonguay ( You can also seek assistance from Mr. Blake or Mme. Ferrer if you require it.

Our school uses Edublogs to document and showcase your learning and experiences at Heritage Woods. This tool is based around a WordPress platform.

You will use the various pages of your blogs (English, Social Studies, Science etc.) as a repository of your learning. You will post examples of your work and write reflections of these pieces based around the core competencies. You can also use your blog to post about your experiences at Heritage Woods, your involvement in clubs and teams, your volunteer opportunities and other opportunities. This will provide you with a basis to develop a positive digital footprint as well as a showcase of your achievements that can later be shared with post-secondary institutions and potential employers.

Tips for Creating a Positive Digital Footprint

  • Always THINK
  • Never post anything that you might find embarrassing later.
  • Be careful with the pictures you post on your public profiles. Remember others will see them and judge you based on their content. Also remember not to post pictures of others without their permission.
  • Change the privacy settings on your social networking sites so that only your Friends can see your information
  • Do not disclose your personal address, phone number, passwords. Bank card numbers…etc even in private messages. There is always the possibility of somebody hacking into your account and finding them.
  • Do not post things to bully, hurt, blackmail, insult, or afflict any kind of harm on others.
  • Always keep in mind that once information has been posted online, it can be almost impossible to remove because of archiving and file sharing. Even though you deactivate your accounts, the information may still be retrieved by others.
