What I Want to Learn in English 10

During my time in English 10, I would like to learn how to comprehend English as an art form. Whether it is through poetry, Shakespeare’s plays or well-written novels, I believe that English is an underappreciated art form.

English has a plethora of literary devices that causes the reader to submerge into the story. I would like to be informed about these literary devices because they are common in our everyday readings. I also would like to practice using these literary devices, as it gives me a deeper understanding of how they work.

Well written English has a rhythm to it. The most famous example is Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter. However, there are other forms that deserve to be recognized and studied. Other plays, perhaps those older than Shakespeare’s, have a different rhythm.

At its essence, English is truly an underappreciated art form, which deserves to be studied. All of us can speak English to a certain degree, so I believe it is time to elevate our perception and understanding of the English language and study it as an art form.

English Poetry movie

Reflection:
During this project, my group used a lot of communication. We had to develop an equal interpretation of the poem to create a movie based around it. We had to talk to each other and compromise about which parts to use in the script. We all interpreted this poem collaboration was also used later to present our poem in front of the class. Finally, we reflected on our experiences together, communicating what we did well and things we could better in the future. Something I would do better in the future is to try to take a more active part in the group project. Try to overcome my timidness and help more!

Socials Explorer Poster

reflection:

During this project, I had to create a poster about an explorer of my choice. I chose the explorer Erik the Red, who discovered Greenland. I also used lots of critical thinking, and here’s how:

During this project, I analyzed and critiqued lots of information. I had to select certain information I thought would be good for my poster, and rewrite in layman’s terms. I also used the criteria for this project to help influence my decision of what to put on my poster. I also used different sources to double check the information. Sometimes, the sources would have contradictory information, I had to use third sources or my critical thinking to determine the most possible solution. This project really tested my analytical and critique abilities.

This question made me question a lot of things, whether it was which websites are trustworthy to would Mrs. Pavan like this. Everything I did during this project, I took time to reflect and question my decision. I believe that this is the best way to create a “perfect” poster. I had to investigate all the information for this poster. I really needed to do lots of investigating because I had no prior knowledge on the topic.

Lastly, this project required lots of developing and designing. I had to create a poster about a subject I had limited knowledge about. I had to make the information and pictures appealing to the eyes. The difficult part was figuring out how many pictures to use because I didn’t want the pictures to be too distracting from the text. I had to intricately create a wonderful poster, which took lots of critical thinking. In the end, I successfully created a great poster.

In the end, there could’ve been a few things I should’ve done better. I believe I spent too much time planning and not enough time researching. Other than that, I think this project was done to the best of my ability.

Reign of Terror Podcast

Reflection:
During the project, I used communication by having to share and develop ideas with my group members to make a marvelous project. We all communicate with each other to share information with each other. We worked together to carry out and complete the project while sharing ways we could improve our project. We also communicated digitally by sharing information online. In hindsight, we could’ve used more time to improve our project, but I still think its a good project. We also could’ve used more creative thinking. But we cant go back now.

Origin Story Podcast

reflection:

During this project, I used lots of creative thinking. Before I starting writing, I generated ideas about what this myth could be about. After I had what I thought was a good idea, I talked to friends about it, they gave me some constructive criticism and improved my idea. I then had to write it all down using a formal tone and creative language. Because of the word limit, I had to analyze and investigate my work to see which parts I could remove. Lastly, I reflected on my project and reconsidered any questionable parts. After finishing it, I ran it by my friends one last time. Then submitted my project. One thing I could have done better was to spend more time editing my work. My grade 6 teacher always said “20% is writing, 80% is editing” and I should have used that advice while working on this project.

Reflection:
During this project, I used a lot of communication. I used communication by connecting and engaging with others to create an outstanding science project. Our group had to communicate to get all the information into one project. Another part of the communication competency we used during this project was collaborating to carry the project, together, my group used all the information we researched to make an amazing project. In conclusion, I really enjoyed making this project, and really improved on my communication skills.

Take Your Kid To Work Day Assignment

Describe your ideal school in a post – what would you change from what you have experienced to date at Heritage Woods? What would the building look like, the courses offered and the style of learning – do you like the present style or would you like more choice? Include images to help you explain your points.

I have been a student of Heritage Woods Secondary for 2 months. I enjoyed the school, the teachers and the classes, but I would like to propose a few enchantments that can be implemented in the future. In our current learning system, the students are confined to their desks the whole day, so I propose we use kinesthetic learning to make sure everyone is physically engaged in the lesson using kinesthetic learning.

Kinesthetic learning comes with a lot of benefits. This article[1] says “Kinesthetic learning has the advantage of letting children gain self-knowledge by letting them learn at their own comfort level, confidence level and with their own creative potentials. With this style of learning, children are also engaged in positive social interaction, develop problem-solving skills and can apply creativity through self-expression”. Another article[2] says “With the added benefits of physical movement such as exercise, kinesthetic learning appeals not only to those to whom it comes naturally but also to anyone looking for ways to improve their intelligence. If we also see results in how our body changes with exercise, we have another positive reinforcement from kinesthetic learning.”

They way to implement Kinesthetic learning in our school is using advanced Virtual Reality (VR) set for every student. The virtual reality set will help simulate a learning environment that makes learning enjoyable for every student. A few ways we could use virtual reality to teach are:

• Using VR to learn foreign language by having a simulated discussion with a native speaker in difference situations[2]
• Using VR to learn social by being present in historic event and watch them as if you were there[3]
• Using VR in PE by simulating being in physical events like the Olympics[4]

Another benefit of using the VR learning system, it will be easy to add more courses because the teacher don’t actually need to teach. You can learn anytime you wanted to.
For example, our current P.E. curriculum is centered around team sports like, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc… while developing the team spirit in all of those activities is a great benefit, I would like to see more “dangerous” sport activities which we can not practice in real life, like:bullfighting and running obstacle courses.

To accommodate for the new learning system, a few architectural changes will be needed. When people have their VR set on, they are not aware of their surroundings, therefore we have to make more spaces in classrooms so people don’t crash into walls or other students.

Since all the learning and physical activities will make student hungry, I would like to see the school having two cafeterias instead of just one that we have today. This will allow for shorter line-ups which means less time wasted in line and more time spent learning, as well as a bigger variety of food to choose from.

To conclude,
In my ideal school, we take advantage of technology to make learning enjoyable and efficient. We will have immersive learning environment, lots of subject to choose from while enjoying our time at school.

Reflection:
During this project, I used a lot of creative thinking. I had to generate ideas that would work in a Sway presentation. These slides had to be done to the best of my ability, meaning that it took a lot of reflecting on my ideas, and analyzing and critiquing them. I then had to develop and slightly change my ideas when I started making the presentation because how I thought it would work was unrealistic and I had to adapt and improvise. Lastly, I reflected on my project and got someone else’s opinions on it. If I had to redo this project, I would definitely spend more time on picking content rather than presentation formatting. I really regret spending so much time formatting and less time selecting goo content.
