During my time in English 10, I would like to learn how to comprehend English as an art form. Whether it is through poetry, Shakespeare’s plays or well-written novels, I believe that English is an underappreciated art form.
English has a plethora of literary devices that causes the reader to submerge into the story. I would like to be informed about these literary devices because they are common in our everyday readings. I also would like to practice using these literary devices, as it gives me a deeper understanding of how they work.
Well written English has a rhythm to it. The most famous example is Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter. However, there are other forms that deserve to be recognized and studied. Other plays, perhaps those older than Shakespeare’s, have a different rhythm.
At its essence, English is truly an underappreciated art form, which deserves to be studied. All of us can speak English to a certain degree, so I believe it is time to elevate our perception and understanding of the English language and study it as an art form.
