Core Competencies Self Assessment

Communicating

Communication is a key way to not only show your learning but also find your way through life. Personally when learning I think communication is most effective when I’m both listening and seeing a visual. But especially listening is key when trying to learn a new concept. Learning through listening is also important when developing new relationships whether that be with friends, teacher or co-workers. Being able to hear someone out not only makes you a supportive person but it can also give you many advantages in life. Having the ability to grasp information that others tell you can have any benefits.

Creative Thinking

Self expression is vital when showing what you have learned. But where do you find inspiration when wanting to express yourself? Well you can look for inspiration in what you’ve learned but you can look beyond that by looking to your role models whether it be a family member, friend, or even an artist. The internet is also a great place to look for inspiration. There is basically an endless supply of music, visual art, and countless other forms of art all at your finger tips. You can use these inspirations to create something unique to you that is creative and shows what you have learned.

Social Awareness and Responsibility

It is insanely important to be aware of how your word effect others. Like most people my age I don’t know if I’m perfect at this but then again can you ever really know how someone is going to react to something you say. I suppose the goal is to always have good intentions when saying things. They say if you have nothing to say than don’t say anything at all. While this statement has some truth to it I beg to differ. Something’s need to be said whether its nice or not. If not then your nothing more than a door mat who’s only purpose is pleasing others. But you need to refrain from saying things that don’t need to be said and are just nasty. Even if bad things exist and need to be said in this world you shouldn’t go out of your way to say mean things.

What I Would Like to Learn in Literary Studies 10

This year in literary studies I would like to learn to better understand literature and be able to read something and write down my thoughts on the piece in such a way where it makes sense and is well delivered. I think this skill would allow me to better communicate with my peers and be able to share me ideas and feeling in an understandable way. Another goal is to get better at public speaking and hopefully I will learn tactics and technique to better that skill.

I also want to improve my reading. As of now I am a fairly slow reader and I tend to skim over words without full taking them in and understanding them. And finally I want to learn and make a habit of having beautiful cursive handwriting. But this is a smaller goal because I think if I focus to much in something as vain and small as nice handwriting it could take away from bigger and more important goals.

Overall I just want to be able to take a piece of writing and read and fully understand it. I want to be able to take this information and write a well formatted essay on it and be able to fully communicate all my thoughts on paper.

Student Reflections:
1.Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):

A few reasons I would enjoy being a kindergarten teacher is I would get summers off which would give me time to travel. I would also get to spend all day with little kids which is something I would have to get used to but I think it would be very stress free and fun. I also want to make a difference in peoples lives and I think being a positive role model for young kids is one way to do that.

2.Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):

I few reasons I wouldn’t want this job is because I think I would have a lot of pressure from the parents of the kids. I also think that it would be hard to keep five year old’s focused all day. Also kindergartens are very messy and I already clean enough at home.

3.Is this job for you? Why or why not?
I think I don’t want this job because I already have my heart set on a career. I want to pursue art and more specifically work for Disney. I know its a bit silly but I think art is something that will never be replaced by a computer.

4.Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).
I think TYKTW is a really good way connect parents and kids but also gives the kid and idea of what they want to do after high school. I think this is important because a lot of students don’t know what they want to do.
