The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is one of the biggest projects for the Career Life Education course. YPI requires students to research about a charity of their choice and are encouraged to create a 10 minute presentation in hopes of winning a cash prize towards the charity by winning the various rounds. Our group choose A Loving Spoonful as our charity and we were able to make it to the semi-final round. Through this process, I was able to utilize my core competencies of communication. In order to stand out from other presentations something that we proficiently used in our project was the theme of “the little engine that could”. We were able to tie this theme throughout the beginning and end of presentation in a unique way that differentiated us from the other presentations. This creative use of language exercised our core competency of communication. Not only was communication seen in our presentation but this competency was seen when I worked with my group members and gained first-person research of the charity by visiting the facility. In our group, communication was essential in order for us to meet the deadlines and goals. We also needed this competency when we had to plan when and how we would go to the interview with the charity and what questions we would ask. Once we had the interview organized we further communicated with the the charity representative by asking pertinent questions that would progress us further in this project.
