About Me

Hello, welcome to the “About Me” page.  Here you will know a bit little about me such as a quote that inspires me and my favourite YouTube video. My name is Justin and I am a high school student . I live in B.C. and love to walk through the wooded parks and trails and enjoy west-coast nature. I have two hobbies as of 2017: gardening and art. My hobbies alternate; gardening in the warmer months and art during the cool, rainy months. Currently I’m an avid plant collector focusing mainly on drought tolerant plants like cacti and other succulents. I also have a modest interest on the cultivation of orchids and other epiphytic plants. Graphite and wax pencil crayons are currently my favourite mediums—I love the fact that they are easy to control and therefore not messy when compared to other materials.

 Quote

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

~Mahatma Ghandi

All of Mahatma Ghandi’s quotes are a lesson to be learned. Many of the quotes teach how to be human and show compassion, benevolence and kindness. This quote is important to me since I share the belief that you should treat others’ the way you want to be treated in order to make the school—and the world— a better place. However, on occasion I have those bad days where I may not feel well, so instead of making others feel good I could do the opposite. So this quote reminds me to think of others and how they might feel if I did that.

My favourite YouTube Video.

This one is really difficult for me to answer as I really have no favourite; it changes constantly due to the season and current interests. My YouTube video history is generally going to be boring to others’ since it consists of gardening with desert plants, graphite and pencil crayon drawing tutorials, and song that I enjoy listening to while I do homework. However, I do have a select few of YouTube channels that I go back to again and again. I couldn’t narrow it down to my absolute favourite so I just provided some videos that I currently like.

This is one of the content creators that I frequent, her name is Laura Eubanks and she’s a garden designer that uses succulents in tapestries to create beautiful designs with a variety of colours and textures. This video is truly impressive, not the filming but the maturity of the plants and how beautifully their grown; something that I hope my plants can become.

I also mentioned that I enjoy listening to music, my favourite artist is the singer Sia. She is my most listened to artist because she has such a distinct and unique voice that conveys emotion and because she writes her own songs her voice pairs well with the song . This clip is a live show of the song “Titanium”. Titanium has inspiring lyrics that sound great with Sia’s voice. I attached the live clip because I enjoy the acoustic version over the EDM (electronic dance music) version by David Guetta.

Favourite Website

My favourite website is CactiGuide.com. CactiGuide.com is a fantastic website that has reliable information on the identification of cacti— both jungle, alpine and desert varieties. This website also has a wonderful fourm that has many veteran and beginner cactus and succulent growers that share information to help each other with topics on cultivation and identification.

Impactful Image

  The Starry Night

Painting by Vincent Van Gogh

This image is very well known and is my favourite piece due it’s composition. It’s a classic piece for good reason, the piece is cleverly painted with small strokes that create a slow, peaceful mood and sets the seen and atmosphere of night, it also presents the good use of directional strokes lead your eye around the page without overwhelming the viewer. I really like how it is different from realism and other conventional styles during that time yet provides a beautiful and powerful piece of art. This image is inspiring and hopefully I can learn how to use mediums to create a quality piece.
