Wood Bug Assignment

Our first unit for science was the scientific method and our class was required to create a controlled experiment using wood bugs. This experiment would need to meet the criteria of using the scientific method and having an ethically appropriate experiment. My partner and I chose to do an experiment on how the bugs would react to different colour spectrum’s of light.

Core Competency Reflection

This project required us to use digital media in order to communicate our results. We used Microsoft Word through the online browser; Office 365. My partner and I were able to practice and use Word to write up the experiment, as well as using it to graph our data. We found that Office 365, was  invaluable when it came to working collaboratively in a group. You can share with other peers in order for them to edit, and their edits will show up in real time and affect the original document. This is more efficient than saving, editing and emailing documents. When we created our experiment, we had to critically think about limiting the number of variables so we could create a controlled experiment. This project also required personal responsibility in order to sort and plan some of the logistics of bringing live wood bugs and supplies to school. One thing that I would improve, is to organize the report neatly and have a better structure in order to clearly communicate our findings.
