Communication

Throughout my learning, I have used communication to help get my ideas out and into my work. When doing an assignment, it is important to take the skills that the teacher has provided us with and form them into our own piece of work. Communication helps me do this as it gives me an opportunity to share my learning. For example, in Career Life Education class, we partook in a project called the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. This was an eye-opening project as it exposed us to different groups of people in our community. For the YPI project, we had to research a charity and communicate our interpretation of the charity’s values to our classmates. The skill of communicating helped us as students to collaborate with one another and share our findings.

Critical Thinking

During school, the skill of thinking is one that is used in every class. We are given pieces of work and asked to analyze and reflect on it. This a crucial skill as it is something that is used in everyday life, not just in an educational setting. Responding to text with critical thinking is another useful tool that is very present in our learning. In English class, we are given stories to read and analyze to find the true meaning. This way of thinking helps you think deeper and learn what information is most important. When reading a short story, analyzing the storyline, setting, and characters can help you reach this level of thinking, and will give you the opportunity to ask and answer meaningful questions.

Personal Responsibility

In school, it is important to take responsibility in your learning. You are the only one who has real control over your work and the marks you get, so taking responsibility for yourself is a crucial part of achieving your goals. A time where I really took responsibility for my learning was when I transitioned from middle school to high school. In middle school, there are always teachers making sure you are doing all your work and staying on task. In high school, you are the only one who can make sure you are completing all your jobs efficiently. I got used to always being looked after by a teacher in middle school, and when I went to high school the transition was jarring. It was important for me to immediately realize my role in my learning and take full personal responsibility.

Water Cycle Comic

For this assignment, I used creative and critical thinking to create a well done product. I reviewed my notes on the water cycle and chose the important information that would help make my comic more affective. I added creativity to my comic by personifying a water droplet and making the water cycle a journey that the droplet goes on. I created different settings for my water droplet to go through, which made the journey more exciting. I analyzed the stages of the water cycle, and created a journey that made sense and was easy to follow. By using critical and creative thinking, I created a comic that represented the water cycle in a creative way.

Shoe Project

Explanation

The character I chose to represent on the shoe is Dec. I chose him because he is the main character and is a crucial part of the story. The story is told throughout his life, and about the things that happen to him.  For the shoe, I chose items that showed who Dec was, not only as a character but as a person. For example, the Architectural Record magazine. One of Dec’s main interests is architect so having it on the shoe shows what Dec likes, and how it is important to him. Another item I included were the postcards from his mother Lindy. Lindy is a major part of Dec’s life, even if she is not in it anymore. Dec is constantly thinking about Lindy, and the postcards represent how Lindy feels the same way. As Dec’s mother, she shows her love and care for him in the way she writes. This also tells us about who Dec is as a person, due to the amount his mother loves him. Lastly, an important item on the shoe is a quote from Dec, “I call architecture frozen music.” This quote is one of extreme intelligence, and it represents how smart Dec really is. It shows how Dec is a wise and mature person, and that is a main part of who he is.

Reflection

In my shoe assignment, I used the skill of critical thinking to choose purposeful details that would be included in my shoe. The items I chose represented the character in a meaningful way, and had a relevant connection to the theme of the story. Items such as the bookshelf and the postcards represented the theme of challenges. The bookshelf is the item that was responsible for the death of Runyon, and changed the character represented in the shoe’s life forever. The postcards were a crucial part for the characters relationship with his mother, and shaped who he was as a person. Overall, the use of critical thinking helped me create a show that had purpose, and helped share the truth of the character.

Tagxedo Assignment

In the story “The Sea Devil”, it follows a man who goes through a life changing experience while fishing on an ordinary night in late September. His experience changes the way he views nature, and I represented that in the colour and shape of my tagxedo.

The key characters in the story are the Ray and the Man.

The setting is nighttime in Florida in late September, by the water.

An interesting phrase in the story is “He liked the loneliness and the labour of it”. I found this interesting because I feel that most people would not enjoy lonely labour.

One of the core competencies I used while creating this tagxedo was critical thinking. I reread through the book and picked out the most important information that would help my interpretation of the book be clear. I used this skill to decide what parts of the story would make my tagxedo as impactful as possible. This helped me complete my assignment thouroughly and on time.

Current Lab

Reflection

In this assignment, I used my social responsibility skills to help further my success in this lab. During the data collection process, I contributed and helped set up all the circuits, and collected data for each of them. Using this information, I helped my group create our final sway project. My part in the project was to create the hypothesis for the sway. I used my social responsibility skills to create a correct and well written response and submit it on time. The use of my social responsibility skills helped both my group and I in the success of our project.

Infographic For Industrial Revolution

Infographic Reflection

In my infographic, I think I included communication very clearly. I included many different visual pieces and different text pieces that communicated my understanding of the Industrial revolution. I both included facts and personal opinions on the industrial revolution, which showed my knowledge on the revolution and also my personal thoughts. Overall I am proud of my infographic and I appreciate the way it showed my learning.

Rwanda paragraph

Forgiveness in Rwanda

Keira Storms                                                                                                        November 13, 2018

In 1994, the country of Rwanda went through a major genocide that killed over 800,000 people. Neighbours were killing neighbours, brothers were killing brothers, and the country was divided. Afterwards, people expected the country to stay that way for a very long time because it is incredibly hard to connect with people again after tragedy. But after a while, people began to reconnect, to communicate, and forgive. People were able to look past what others have done, because that doesn’t define you. You aren’t what your actions are. Even if you have done regrettable things in the past, you can grow and change into the person you want to be. The people in Rwanda were able to show their courage, by showing how they forgive. I think everyone can learn a lesson from the people of Rwanda, and if we all change for the better, the world would be a better place.
