Core Competency: Communication

During our social studies project, I did not know what to do at first. However, I asked a group member and was ale to receive the proper help I needed. I was able to communicate my problems and solve them through confronting a group member. When we were coming up with ideas of how to do the project, I had a general understanding of what I wanted to do, but I still listened to my group members as we worked together to incorporate our ideas into one that suited all of our tastes. What I could work on next time is to communicate how the work is being spread out among the group members. Because we did not do this, I ended up doing most of the work. When Mr. Chaffee asked for the percentages of work each group member put in, I was unsure of how to present it in a way that was accurate without coming off as arrogant or full of myself to my other group members. In the end, we talked about it respectfully and logically and ultimately decided on certain percentages for each person.

Core Competency: Communication

Here is evidence that I can… collaborate, teach, be considerate to others, discuss, contribute to class discussion, explain, justify, share ideas, etc.:

During our project, we worked really well to communicate our ideas together and decide on the best one. An example of this was when we were doing our brainstorm. We all had different ideas, but that did not deter our cooperation and we slowly reasoned each idea out. After talking for a long time, we decided on what we have right now. Sometimes, one of us would come up with an invention idea that was slightly sub-par compared to others, or was already invented in the real world. However, respecting each and everyone’s opinions, we politely moved on and did not talk in-depth about the idea. We had long conversations and it felt like each one was meaningful.

The Interview

  1. What is your job title: Accountant
  2. What is your job description: Accountants normally look at a company or group’s financial statistics, and then sort and organize them.
  3. What are the duties and/or tasks you perform at your job: The normal duties and tasks of an accountant are reporting on the financial situations in the company and/or group. In summary, they do financial reporting and taxation.
  4. a) Training: Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) – b) Education: Masters Degree in English (from China), Masters Degree in Business Administration (from USA) – c) Experience: 20+ years – D) skills and attributes: Good at paying attention to small details.
  5. What are you some of the things you like about the job: Calculating with numbers is fun, as there is always a different answer to the equation.
  6. What are some of the things you dislike about this job: Because accounting is mostly related around numbers, it’s sometimes repetitive.
  7. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years: Unlike other jobs that change along with technology, accounting is based mostly on calculating figures, which shouldn’t change in the next coming years.

Student Reflections:

  1. Give three reasons why you would like this job: a) Accounting is more logically inclined, meaning it fits how I use critical thinking the most. b) There’s not much physical activity, as I want a relaxing and not intensive job. c) In the workplace, it’s normally very quiet.
  2. Give three reasons why you would not like this job: a) Could be repetitive, as I’m doing calculations for the whole day. b) I’d be staring at a screen for long hours without moving around much. c) A quiet workplace is good, but always quiet is not that good. Limited interaction is something that I don’t really like.
  3. Is this job for you? Why or why not: I do not think this job is for me, as I do not like the idea of doing calculations all day, and having limited interactions with my co-workers.
  4. Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?): The TYKTW gives me a good idea of what I want in a work place, as well as broadens my horizons on how a company and each employee works.
