Core Competencies Self-Assessment

Communication:

The easiest methods of communication for me are reading and listening.  I am very good at analyzing texts and writing notes from a presentation. Furthermore, I’m good at memorizing notes. I like to express my understanding and ideas through various types of projects. When completing a project, I usually contribute by telling my ideas to the group members. In the future, I want to become a better public speaker because it will increase my overall confidence. In addition, I would like to improve my writing skills because it will help me articulate in detail my ideas. I want to be able to possess a wide variety of advanced vocabulary to make my writing more interesting. Having an accurate structure for writing is very significant since it will be accessible and clearer to read. I will accomplish this goal by taking Composition 11 and practicing during the summer break.

Critical and Reflective Thinking:

Personal Awareness and Responsibility:

When I feel discouraged, I usually take a short break, then focus on the project again. Sometimes watching a motivation video inspires me. If I receive a bad mark for my performance, I will practice more for the next assignment or test. I usually complete study guides in preparation for a difficult exam. If I don’t fully understand a subject, I ask my peers or teachers and keep progressing.

Here are some of my learning goals for the upcoming years.

French:

One of my learning goals is to become a fluent French speaker. I will achieve this goal by enrolling in French 11 and taking a summer course. Learning how to speak more than one language will be significant for university and beyond.

Education:

I value the importance of education because it will be significant for my future careers. Education is significant since it helped me improve my knowledge and allowed me to have a better understanding of the world. I will improve by taking advanced courses in school.

Volunteering:

Currently, I volunteer for the SPCA at our school. We have completed various bake sales, cards, and created donation bins. Looking ahead, I want to have a wider range of volunteering jobs.

Be Active:

In the upcoming years, I want to be more active by snowboarding and windsurfing. These sports are a great way for me to reduce stress and have a healthy lifestyle. Playing sports is a substantial process of being active. It has been proven that it can improve sleep, create healthy bones and muscles, and enhance the fitness of a person. It can also lead to better marks in school.

What I Want to Learn in Literary Studies 10

In this course, I want to learn new vocabulary words and the different types of writing in Literacy Studies 10. Learning new vocabulary will improve my English language. How to incorporate the new vocabulary and understanding the deeper meaning behind the word will make me become a better English speaker. Furthermore, being aware of the various writing styles is significant. I believe being exposed to different texts will increase my English skills. Reading, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the various texts of Shakespeare will help me achieve this goal. I want to understand the philosophy behind some of the texts and characters. In addition, I want to learn how to write in cursive this year. Cursive has been used for many years but has become less relevant. Learning this type of writing will enhance my essays.

Lastly, learning new poetic devices will improve my English skills. Knowing how and when to use similes and metaphors is very significant for writing also. I will improve these skills by reading Shakespeare and other books.

Core Competency  Reflection: Communication

The core competency I mainly used for this project was Communication. I like to present what I learned by using a powerpoint. Posters are another great way to present work. In addition, choosing important facts is also significant to the project. Reading and speaking are some of my easiest methods of communication. When presenting my powerpoint, I used cue cards to help me with speaking. It is also important to have a loud voice that projects to all the students in the class. This helps students pay more attention when someone is speaking. I would like to improve my writing because it can lead to better speaking. I can accomplish this goal by reading more books.

Reflection: Personal Awareness and Responsibility

For this project, the main core competency I used was Personal Awareness and Responsibility. I learned how to manage stress when completing a project on time. One of my main roles for this project was to edit the video. It took me a while to edit the video because the editing software wasn’t very cooperative and often glitchy. I had to have patience and determination to finish the video. When I am discouraged about my work, I like to take a quick break and relax. After I’m done with the break, I work on the project until it’s finished. I respect the contributions my peers made to the project.

Ways to improve

I am trying not to procrastinate to maintain a healthy academic performance. So far, I have primarily succeeded with this goal. I have usually completed my assignments quickly after I received them.

Free Verse Poem

Free Verse Poem Image

Reflection: Creative Thinking

For the Free Verse Poem, we were assigned to find at least one metaphor, one simile, one personification, and one alliteration to create based off an image. I picked an image with enough detail that would help me think of new ideas. Usually, the animal photos help me think of ideas for sentences, especially for the personification aspect. I researched some examples of metaphors and personification to help me create new sentences. I tried to think of a story between the fish and the shark.  When thinking of new ideas, I had to experiment with many sentences. After I created twelve sentences, I picked the top eight sentences to incorporate into my free verse poem.

I can improve my writing skills by looking at more detailed examples of personification, alliteration, similes, and metaphors. I can incorporate some of these ideas into helping me form my own sentences. I think I should focus on creating better metaphors especially because they are much harder than similes.

Environment Video Project

Reflection: Communication

I mainly used the core competency communication for this project. As a group, we thought of how to incorporate our ideas from the research sheet into our video. We also communicated about what types of images would go well alongside our voice overs. Our first idea for the project was for it to be a new report. I had more of a negative approach to this idea. I thought we should show our learning by doing a documentary because it would be easier to do voice overs and would be more descriptive. However, we fixed this issue by combining both ideas together. I believe by combining both ideas, it enhanced the overall quality of the project. We communicated a lot of our ideas on the project through email. We worked on our project numerous times during flex and lunch. Because of this, we got the project finished on time.

I can improve by being more open and considerate to other people’s ideas. I would also like to improve my speaking skills for the voice overs.

Recycling Flipbook

Brochure:

Reflection: Creative Thinking

The core competency I used for this project was creative thinking. When creating the poster, we developed many ideas on what material we should chose. We first thought of doing electronic devices, then narrowed it down to television devices. We chose television devices because many people have probably owned an old, outdated TV that they want to get rid of. Also, some people don’t know how to recycle TV’s.  We decided to keep the poster simple because many people would get bored to read a poster with a lot of information on it. We also thought it would be more informative if we included the address of the recycling facility.

I can improve by being more descriptive with my ideas. I think we also could’ve added a little more information.

Merchant of Venice Tableau

Reflection: Creative Thinking

For this assignment, we were asked to create a tableau for Act 1 in The Merchant of Venice.  We took a picture for three scenes in the act that depicts the main idea of the book. We decided who would be each character in each scene. For generating ideas for the tableau we looked for the main idea of each scene in the book. We found specific quotes or actions in each scene that would help us create a tableau. We also generated ideas based off memory. I built on our group’s ideas as we were generating them for each scene. For example, I thought that since Shylock was sneaky when making the bond with Antonio, he should cross his fingers. I also thought that he should have a grin on his face because he knows he can get rid of Antonio with this bond. Antonio was a nuisance to Shylock and getting rid of him would feed Shylock’s revenge.

We could improve by picking a better background the first time. However, we did fix this. I think for the Shylock and Antonio scene, we should’ve made Antonio look more worried and nervous about the bond.

Take Your Kid To Work Day 2018

Alternate Assignment

Describe your first two months at Heritage Woods. Have your first two months met your expectations? Why or why not? List and describe in detail three pieces of advice that you might offer to students of your former middle school who are entering Heritage next year? (Include images to assist you in explaining your points.

Since the beginning of the year, I have increased my knowledge in many subjects. In tech ed, I learned how to 3d design and how to properly use the machines for woodwork. I learned about chemistry and what living things need in order to live in the Earth’s environment in science. I have become more active and athletic because of PE. In digital literacy, I learned how to create a stable digital footprint.

My first two months at Heritage Mountain have surpassed my expectations. I have learned how to manage my homework better and have become a better critical thinker. I enjoy having more independence in high school. My teachers are helpful and I have made many new friends. I’m looking forward to the rest of the school year. Here is my advice for students entering Heritage Woods next year.

3. Do Extracurricular Activities

Doing activities outside of school is important because it boosts self-esteem and academic performance. Do something you are passionate about or something that will help the environment. You will socialize with people that have the same interests as you and could create long-lasting friendships. Some extracurricular activities teach you important life skills such as leadership.

2. Take A Language Course

There are many benefits to taking a second language. You can develop better communication, memory and multitasking skills. Many colleges such as UBC require students to learn a second language. It can also help you become an employee for a job. Communicating with more than one culture can persuade more customers to come to your business.

1. Don’t Procrastinate On Homework

Image result for procrastinate

Procrastination is a major issue in high school. According to the American Psychological Association, “between 80 and 95 percent of college students procrastinate on their schoolwork”. Procrastinating on homework can cause anxiety and stress. It can also negatively impact your academic performance. You should finish your homework early because you won’t forget about it or get distracted by other things.  You will feel better about yourself after completing it.

WoodBug Lab

Reflection:Communication

I primarily used the core competency communication for the Tiggy Hog project. I was able to communicate my ideas with my peers about the layout of the project. My communication skills were also present when I decided we should see if the Tiggy Hogs are attracted to wood or stone. This thought would later be incorporated into our hypothesis and question. We also collaborated on who would bring each item for the experiment. I like to show my learning through a picture and description sequence. Usually using effective pictures, enhances the overall quality of the project. I like to display data with excel or a google docs chart. We shared many similar ideas for the procedure, hypothesis, observations and the conclusion parts of the project.

I can improve by importing more relevant images to the project. This would help us communicate our ideas better and more efficiently. Also, I would like to improve more on my writing skills. I can accomplish this goal by reading more books.
