Sun Screen
What is this about:
Sun screen is very important to protect people from UV radiation and to prevent suffering from a sunburn. Sun screens history started in 1938 and was invented by a man named Franz Greiter. He made a sun screen after suffering from a sun burn Climbing mount Piz Buin. in 1946 Piz Buin Glacier Cream was created. This cream only had an SPF of 2 (SPF is Sun Protection Factor) SPF of 2 is pretty bad but at least was a start. Benjamin Green was another person who created a sun burn preventer of his own during a WWII mission it was named Red Vet Pet. The Red Vet Pet was effective but was nasty to wear. Benjamin Green added some cocoa butter and coconut oil to the mix and soon after invented Coppertone. Greiter was the one who actually made the standard measuring for sun screen SPF and also helped develop modern day sun screen. The modern day sunscreen usually has an SPF of 60.
Why is this important:
This is important because Sun burns would be something everyone feared and maybe wont go outside but also sun burns can cause skin cancer which is something that is painful and deadly because well its cancer. If sun screen had not been invented skin cancer would be more common and other problems with our skin would occur. Without sunscreen summer would be painful and not very fun like it is with sun screen. Sun screen has come along way since the 1940s and has become more repellent towards the sun damaging your skin now, just to think that the first sun screen had an SPF of 2 and now they have an SPF of 60. Sun screen was just a paste people made and then it turned into an actual remedy on the market.
Velcro
What is This about:
Velcro is something that we use to fasten things to other things for a short time and it durable and is easier than glue and tape and can detach and reattach from things just using a bunch of hooks on one side and a bunch of loops on the other side, Velcro is very convenient and has a interesting history. Velcro was created by George de Mestral, this idea came from when he went hunting and got a cockle bur stuck to his leg and noticed that the cockle bur had hooks and can hook on to things and his pants had many loops to attach on to so he made a fastener in the 1940’s which was named Velcro and became a brand. The first Velcro was actually made from cotton but soon switched to nylon as it was more durable and would wear less than cotton. Velcro replaced buttons, laces, zippers, snaps and more. Velcro was used in the 1960’s for NASA to store pens, food and more.
Why is this relevant:
Velcro is relevant because it is what most things are fastened by and you also would be able to rock some cool Dora Velcro shoes. Velcro is very easy to open and secure things which is why it was used for NASA in the 1960’s when in space you need access things easily. Also the military used it for other things like there uniforms which were issued in 2004. If Velcro wasn’t available there would be no Velcro things like the roof of a convertible car because it needs Velcro so keep it from flopping. Velcro is also use full for clothes and if it were not available we would still have buttons on every thing. Also Velcro is used for blood pressure tests and if it were not here we would have to fasten it with tape or buttons which is inconvenient. Velcro is important because it offers convenience and most things in the Industrial Revolution were to offer convenience.
Vacuum Cleaner
What is this about:
The Vacuum Cleaner is something every house hold has nowadays and it makes our lives cleaner and heathier by sucking up our mess in an easy convenient way. The first vacuum was the carpet sweeper created in 1860 by Daniel Hess and how it worked was that a rotating brush and bellows would generate Suction. In 1869 Ives W. McGaffe created the whirlwind which had a belt driven fan providing suction. Also in 1898 John S. Thurman invented a gas powered vacuum but was big and inconvenient and just blew the air away and not sucking it up so it defeated the purpose of the vacuum idea. The next vacuum that took the ideas of the previous inventions and created a vacuum that was either attached to a horse or equipped in a building. Because of the size the vacuum was more of a vacuum service than a small easy to use vacuum. The First true vacuum that works like nowadays was created in 1905 by Walter Griffiths and it used bellows to suck up dirt on a flexible pipe. The vacuum was a luxury when it came out but by the second world war middle class people could afford it.
Why is this Relevant:
This is relevant because the vacuum cleaner is apart of most peoples lives and keeps there house clean and free of rats and other animals or insects. If the vacuum cleaner was not created people would be living filthy lives and would always have a problem with rats and would be come very sick over time even if its just your floor or carpet its always good to keep it clean, you could be able to use a broom but brooms don’t always get all the dirt. The vacuum cleaner also has a very interesting history as it was one idea that was built on and many inventers created there own idea of a vacuum cleaner to convenience people in there homes today.
Good start adding your assignment Marc, however, you still need to add a reflection based on one of the core competencies to your blog. 2.5/5
