Black-Throated Mango

Energy like a Hummingbird,

Never losing any energy,

Always buzzing around,

No matter what you do, you’re never unheard.

Covered in crazy colours,

No matter the season,

Always fun and a blast.

Core Competency: Creative Thinking

When making a brochure you have to think very creatively to make it visually appealing. One very crucial part is generating ideas to use. One way I generate ideas is by building on other’s ideas and add new things to make it unique and creative. An example of me doing this is when I used the template brochure my teacher gave us and adapted and changed its layout and design to make it fit for my brochure and my book. Another thing I do is try and do something else and just think. This allows something to pop into my head that fits really well. How I did this during my brochure project was I would take a break while working and go read a book or play some video games and I would be able to think up new ideas. Finally, one important part of generating ideas is deliberately learning a lot about what your writing about so that you have a better understanding of what the topic is and allows your ideas to be more driven to fit in with the topic. How I did this was by continuing to read the book series and learned more about the characters and their backstory and that clued me into certain things that I could add to my brochure. In conclusion, Generating ideas is one of the most crucial parts of working on a project and making it come to fruition.

Another important aspect that I found helped when generating my brochure was being able to see novelty and value in what I was doing. One time I did this was when I had to get new ideas and build on other’s ideas to create new things. One example of this in my brochure was my layout. I was able to take a three-column brochure layout but adapted it to fit with my writing style. Another way of doing this is by generating new ideas as you pursue your interests. One time I did this was when I was done writing and I had to fill in space, one thing I used to fill in space was showing an image that was very important to the plot and swayed the entire series. This filled the gap, fit with the series, and just made the brochure look less bland. One final thing I did was gathering ideas while playing and being relaxed, this led to ideas being more fun for me and making me happier. An example of this was the images. Instead of using fan sketches that might be more accurate to the descriptions, I used pictures from a show based on this series that I was in the midst of watching and was really enjoying. All in all, seeing the novelty and value in what your creating is very important in any project.

One thing I struggled with at the time was developing ideas. One thing I especially struggled with was using my experiences with various steps to direct future work. I find that when I start working on something like a brochure with multiple steps, I don’t use past experience or ask someone who has the experience and instead just run through all the obstacle which can hinder that quality of my project. Another thing I struggle with is making my ideas work and if they don’t, changing what I’m doing to make it work. While normally I’m good at this, I found that with this project I wasn’t doing it quite as much as normal and that led to me not being entirely happy with some parts of my project because I settled instead of reaching to make it work. One final thing I struggled with was being able to make my ideas work within the constraints of a given form, problem, and materials if I keep playing with them. I found that with this project I would get upset very quickly when trying to play with ideas, this would lead me to not being able to get some of my ideas to work and having to settle for something I didn’t like as much. In the end, I noticed that I struggled with developing new and creative ideas throughout this project and hope to improve on that soon.

Core Competency: Social Responsibility

A big part of a group project is contributing to the community of your group and caring for the work environment. One time where I have to be able to do this is being able to participate in group activities to improve the group community. I did this a lot at the start where we were all contributing ideas and information to advance or knowledge of forts from this time period. Another important part of contributing and caring is being able to identify how your actions and the actions of others affect the community. I think one time where I realized the weight of this was when we created a new Minecraft world. The reason I wanted to do this was that I had done so many things that changed it negatively that it needed a restart, this is also where part of our group communication fell apart but I think it helped in the long run. I think one final time where I showed these skills is when I was able to analyze complex social issues from multiple perspectives. With the information I attain from this I’m able to make thoughtful actions to make positive change. One time I did this was at the beginning of the project when I had to decide who to go with. I had to take multiple perspectives of group work into account and form a group I could trust to work, and wouldn’t hurt or leave anyone out if I could avoid it. I think when you boil everything down, everyone can and has contributed to your community and cared for your environment in some way, and I can also see the importance this has in being a better person and helping others.

Another major part of a project, especially a group one, is being able to solve your problems peacefully. This is so important cause without it you wouldn’t be able to get anything done as everyone would be changing things and arguing. one big part of this is knowing how to solve problems yourself and knowing when to ask for help. I did this when making different buildings. I would solve most problems on my own, but if I needed help or couldn’t do it I would ask a group member or a teacher and get the help that allowed me to move forward. Another big thing in a project like this is being able to identify what your problem is and compare potential problem-solving opportunities. I did this multiple times when building our fort because Minecraft doesn’t have blocks for everything that was used in the fur trade. This led to me having to look at different block alternatives for what I needed in each situation. All in all, I think that solving problems peacefully is one of the most important aspects of anything, especially group projects.

One thing that I find that I generally struggle with is building relationships while working in projects. One thing that I find I tend to struggle with is being part of a group. I wasn’t struggling at the beginning of the project with this, but as we went into the second part of the project after spring break, my communication and group work broke down. I hope I can overcome this in the future so that I can do better in school and projects. Another aspect of group work that I struggle with is being aware of how others may feel and taking steps to make them feel included. I feel that I generally will just go headfirst into a group project alone and take charge, not thinking about how others might feel about what I’m doing. This could lead to issues that would take time to sort out and I really want to improve on this skill. One final thing I struggle with when it comes to building relationships is identifying when others need help and providing it. I find that I will ignore some comments from group mates and this would lead to me not always realizing when they need help. This could lead to them not getting all there work done or not working to the best of their ability. I found that while reflecting on building relationships, I realized that I have lots of room for improvement and I should start working on it now so that I can be a better group mate.

Cloning Poster

Digital Literacy Self Reflection, Communication

In this project, connecting and engaging is very important, especially if you worked in a group. One thing I felt I was good at was my ability to ask and respond to simple questions. I did this while we were coming up with a design for our poster, my partner would ask me questions about design elements and I was able to respond with well thought out, good answers. Another very important skill is being an active listener and supporting your partner. This happens all the time in group projects without you even realizing it. For example, I would support ideas that my partner gave me and would help him bring it to life on the page. One final, very important skill in group projects is the ability to respectfully disagree. This is important because you don’t want to offend your partner, but rather make them see your reasoning which could be better. I think that the time where I had to do this the most was when we were drawing out the characters. We had a disagreement on perspective, and I had to politely explain to them that their idea wouldn’t work and that we had to go with mine. In conclusion, connecting and engaging happens without you even realizing it, you must respond to questions, listen and encourage each other, and be able to respectfully disagree and bounces ideas off each other.

One of the most important aspects of group projects is to collaborate to plan, carry out and review constructions and activities. One of the most important parts of this is to work together to achieve a common goal and doing your share. I did this with my partner where we bounced ideas and concepts of each other so that together, we could make a good poster, then we also had to do our part in bringing those ideas to the page. Another very important aspect of group projects is being able to take on roles and responsibilities. You always do this in projects because taking on these roles and responsibilities is simply doing work. I always did this, but the biggest responsibility I took on was leading the two of us in the use of propaganda. Another very important skill is being able to summarize key ideas and find ways you and your partner agree. I did this at the very beginning where I had to summarize the criteria and find a way that both I and my partner wanted to move forward with this project. All in all, collaborating and planning is very important, you have to work together, take on roles and responsibilities, and summarize key ideas to make a good, successful project.

I found that one major stretch I’ve had with this project is reflecting on the experiences and accomplishments I had. When you receive criticism, it is made to help you build up your work and make it better. I find that with most things, and especially this, I would instead rebuttal their critique and disagree with it on all levels. This was especially clear during the peer evaluation part of this project. I would read the comments and in my head, I would disagree and argue with almost all their points. Another important thing that I struggle with is finding what I learned from certain experiences and activities. I find that generally, I can find the purpose of the experience or activity, but I really struggle with finding what I personally learned. This is clear, again, during the peer evaluation of this project. I would see the points and the critiques and how it would help me, but I wouldn’t absorb that knowledge and help me improve, but rather argue with it and let it fly right over my head. These are two important things that I struggled with during our propaganda poster project and I hope to improve on them for future assignments.
