Core Competency Reflection:

chosen core competency = Critical Thinking

Throughout this assignment, I had to analyze many things and then critique it to see if it is accurate. One example of this is expressing my ability to show my likes and dislikes of information. One time I did this is when I picked the animal I wanted to research and learn about for this project. Another skill I had to use was analyzing evidence from different perspectives. When I had to use this skill was when I was gathering information, I would have to look at it from other people’s perspectives to see if it was accurate. The final skill I had to use was reflecting on and evaluating my thinking, products, and actions. I had to do this when going back through my project and find parts that didn’t fit or could be elaborated on. All in all, I found that throughout this project I had to analyze and critique many things, which allowed me to find and use information accurately.

This assignment involved lots of developing ideas and using them for the design of your word document. An example of how I develop and design ideas was when I would experiment with different ways of doing things. I had to do this a lot when designing my project in Microsoft word and trying to make it look visually appealing. Another time I had to use these skills was when I would monitor my progress and then adjust my actions to make, I achieve what I want to. One time I did this is when I realized that to finish the project to the level, I wanted to I would need to work multiple full days over winter break on this project. One final skill I showed was that I could make choices that helped me create the intended impact on an audience or situation. I did this when picking my pictures for my project, I would pick pictures that I thought would impact people more such as showing my species hunted to try to show people what is happening. I realized that while doing this project, it turned out to be much more developing designing that I originally anticipated.

One important part of critical thinking that I found I struggled with was Questioning and Investigating. I found that I struggled with asking an open-ended question, then research them to find information for my project. Times when I could have done this was when I was researching about the first nations use of my species, I could have asked did they use this technique or method than research for that, instead, I looked up very simple and basic things. A second thing I struggled with was being able to tell the difference between facts and interpretations, opinions or judgments. I found that on multiple occasions that I would at first glance immediately assume it’s a fact, then at a later date re-read it and realize that I was an opinion or a judgment. One final thing I found that I found that I didn’t do enough was considering more than one way to proceed in an investigation. One time while researching I was struggling to find information on how the first peoples hunted my species now, it wasn’t until I told my dad that he told me I should look at how they hunted other species and see if it could apply to mine. While looking back on this project I realized that I struggled with questioning things and investigating things, I hope that from looking back on this I will be able to improve on my research methods.

Extracurricular

One extracurricular activity I have loved for many years is soccer. I have been playing soccer since I was 4 or 5 and have loved every part of it. When I was young nobody knew what positions were, so we would just run around the field having fun. There is one memory I have from when I was this age where I was playing Mari Kart WII in my head and running around on the opposite end of the field. This time was fun, but I’ve moved on and improved a lot.

As I got older, around the age of 7-8 people started playing positions, the position I chose to play is defense. This is also the age were kids started taking soccer more competitively and the clubs started making select teams that consisted of the club’s best players for that age. When I turned 12 it was the first year, we started playing full field and I mad the club’s division 1 team which is the second-best team. I really enjoy playing with the people on this team and I feel we have improved a lot individually and as a team over the past 2 years.

One of the reasons I like soccer is it is a distraction from my schoolwork. I get time to be focused on something I really enjoy doing and its a great way to relieve stress. Another reason is that I enjoy running around and I do that a lot in soccer. This is one of my main sources of fitness and activity so its extremely important that I continue to play. One final reason I enjoy soccer is the chemistry and bonds I have made with the players on my team. Since we have been playing together so long, we have all became friends and understand how each other play.

Student Reflections:

1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):

    1. Nice work environment. The work environment and area are designed well and gives a nice and effective place to work.
    2. Lots of nice places nearby for breaks. The area they have chosen downtown is well placed. It is placed in an area the would allow you to get something good to eat or get some shopping down.
    3. People are all nice and helpful. Everyone in the office all seemed nice and ready to help with something.

2. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):

    1. Frequent calls and meetings. I find I don’t have the patience for long and boring calls with people. Sometimes you just need a break from talking and be able to sit down and work,
    2. The work is very repetitive and boring. I find that it is lots of emailing people and talking on calls, which would be incredibly slow and boring.
    3. From where I live the Commute Distance can be a bit long. It took us around 45 minutes to drive there and that was with good traffic and HOV lane. I would much rather work somewhere that is closer to my house.

3. Is this job for you? Why or why not?

I would say this job isn’t for me because I don’t have the patience to do the same kinds of calls and emails reading every day. I would rather do something where I must do more critical thinking because I find I would enjoy it more and be better at it.

  1. Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post-secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).

The TYKTW day relates to my post-secondary plans because it shows the kind of environment I will likely work in for some time. Although I hope to do something different I have to be open to doing a job like this.
