Core Competency: Social Responsibility

A big part of a group project is contributing to the community of your group and caring for the work environment. One time where I have to be able to do this is being able to participate in group activities to improve the group community. I did this a lot at the start where we were all contributing ideas and information to advance or knowledge of forts from this time period. Another important part of contributing and caring is being able to identify how your actions and the actions of others affect the community. I think one time where I realized the weight of this was when we created a new Minecraft world. The reason I wanted to do this was that I had done so many things that changed it negatively that it needed a restart, this is also where part of our group communication fell apart but I think it helped in the long run. I think one final time where I showed these skills is when I was able to analyze complex social issues from multiple perspectives. With the information I attain from this I’m able to make thoughtful actions to make positive change. One time I did this was at the beginning of the project when I had to decide who to go with. I had to take multiple perspectives of group work into account and form a group I could trust to work, and wouldn’t hurt or leave anyone out if I could avoid it. I think when you boil everything down, everyone can and has contributed to your community and cared for your environment in some way, and I can also see the importance this has in being a better person and helping others.

Another major part of a project, especially a group one, is being able to solve your problems peacefully. This is so important cause without it you wouldn’t be able to get anything done as everyone would be changing things and arguing. one big part of this is knowing how to solve problems yourself and knowing when to ask for help. I did this when making different buildings. I would solve most problems on my own, but if I needed help or couldn’t do it I would ask a group member or a teacher and get the help that allowed me to move forward. Another big thing in a project like this is being able to identify what your problem is and compare potential problem-solving opportunities. I did this multiple times when building our fort because Minecraft doesn’t have blocks for everything that was used in the fur trade. This led to me having to look at different block alternatives for what I needed in each situation. All in all, I think that solving problems peacefully is one of the most important aspects of anything, especially group projects.

One thing that I find that I generally struggle with is building relationships while working in projects. One thing that I find I tend to struggle with is being part of a group. I wasn’t struggling at the beginning of the project with this, but as we went into the second part of the project after spring break, my communication and group work broke down. I hope I can overcome this in the future so that I can do better in school and projects. Another aspect of group work that I struggle with is being aware of how others may feel and taking steps to make them feel included. I feel that I generally will just go headfirst into a group project alone and take charge, not thinking about how others might feel about what I’m doing. This could lead to issues that would take time to sort out and I really want to improve on this skill. One final thing I struggle with when it comes to building relationships is identifying when others need help and providing it. I find that I will ignore some comments from group mates and this would lead to me not always realizing when they need help. This could lead to them not getting all there work done or not working to the best of their ability. I found that while reflecting on building relationships, I realized that I have lots of room for improvement and I should start working on it now so that I can be a better group mate.
