April 14th – The CEF in Battle – The Great War – Activities For Social Studies 10

Hello Everyone,

As we move through the First World War I am looking to do the best we can under the circumstances. Therefore for this week we have broken things down a bit, and also given you a bit more work than last week, only because we will not be meeting (aside from our brief check-in on Thursday April 16th, until the 23rd.

Here are the tasks for the next two weeks:

1. Timeline – I am not going to ask you to make a detailed Timeline or anything like that. Instead, take the following events and put them into the correct chronological order. If you can print this out and cut out each of the events that would be ideal (you can then send me an image of the correct order)- if you cannot print, simply create a new document and copy and paste the events in the correct order then send the file to me.

2. Major Battles Organizer: Read over pages 28-33 in your textbook and complete the following table. I have attached the scanned pages for you.

3. Letter Assignment: As we bring our study, albeit briefly, of the Great War to a close in the next two weeks we are going to be looking at Canada’s Role and the way in which Canada was changed by the war. One of the most important battles, and contributing factors to Canadian Identity was the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Watch the video below (it is longer so you may want to skip through different aspects – I have started the video at 31:28 – discussing Trench Life. The video is a documentary of the battle and discusses first the Battle of the Somme and the advancements that were made by the Canadian Corps in preparation for the assault on Vimy Ridge in 1917.

After watching the video you are to position yourself in the life of a Canadian Soldier and think about what life in the trenches would have been like in addition to the significance of this achievement for the Canadians – capturing Vimy Ridge, a German position that the French and British had been trying to occupy for three years. There are criteria on the attached sheet.

4. Canada’s Role: For the last assignment of our Great War Unit you are going to be examining Canada’s Role in the Great War and how Canada changed as a result of this involvment. Begin by watching the following video.

You will need to again complete the following chart and email Mr. Aitken with a picture of your work – or the file itself. When that is completed I would like you to take this organizer and write a one-page summary of the way’s in which Canada changed in World War I.

You should look to have an introduction, including a topic sentence (something about how the Great War was waged for four years and brought profound changes to the world and to Canada). Then select specific information about the various aspects of how Canada was changed – national identity, role of the government, role of Women, French-English relations etc. You can utilize your textbook and other sources to complete your one page write-up.
