During the unit of matter, we had the chance to experiment with how chromatography works, and in the process, you different kinds of physical separation. We used candy coatings to separate the dye, which is done by boiling, using acetic acid and ammonia water, and evaporation. In the end, we dabbed the dye onto the paper and dipped it in water to see how high the solvent will carry the solute. This depends on the solubility of the solvent and its attraction to the paper. Lots of Critical Thinking was involved in this case, as there were questions that required lots of research and understanding of the topic. Communication was also incorporated because your lab partner and yourself had to know the roles of each so that no steps are being repeated or skipped. Ultimately, I enjoyed this lab as I learned the most from it, and provided me with a better understanding of the roles of each separation technique.
