What I Want to Learn in English This Year

By Ricardo Ortiz

In English this year I would love to learn how to write better stories. I always had trouble starting and ending stories in a professional way. Making stories interesting and entertaining has also been hard to successfully do. I’d also enjoy learning essay writing techniques to help keep my essays on topic, as I sometimes find myself writing off-topic. Group presentations have also been stressful and awkward for me to do and I would like to perform in a very formal and professional way, as I feel it could help in the future. I’m looking forward to having a really good English semester this year.

REFLECTION:

I feel like this assignment really helped my personal awareness and responsibility. I really enjoyed researching the Arctic Ice Caps, and I feel like it made want to stay aware of what’s happening in the world around me more often. Realizing that global warming and the melting of the Arctic ice caps have made me more worried about this subject than I did before. Now that I know the true potential of the melting of the Arctic Ice Caps I feel like we need to start to act now before its too late. Learning about the Arctic Ice Caps has also made me more educated about this subject. Now I have a chance to strike back at the people who don’t believe in global warming (such as my dad). I feel like this assignment has made me more aware and worried about the world around me than I ever did before.

Researching and Networking in A Connected World

Researching and Networking in A Connected World

Three Possible Search Tools for Googling/ Online Searching

1: Searching for an Exact Phrase or Quote

Searching for specific quotes has always been a challenge for me. Every time I searched for a quote, I would always get 1,000,000 different answers that had nothing to do with what I was researching. This was always really frustrating for me, as I like to do things fast and easy. Now that I know there is a much easier way to search for quotes, it has changed my life. Now when I search for specific quotes with the quotation marks, I will get 7 results rather than 1,000,000 results. This tip is very helpful to people (such as me) who like to get things done fast.

2: Excluding a Word from Search Result

I hate it when I’m searching for Elephant Ears (the food) and all I get is “how to plant elephant ears” or “The size of a male elephant ear”. But now by using the minus symbol, I can omit certain subjects that I don’t want to waste my time looking at. This is probably my favorite tip that I have learned, as I have already tried it and it works like a charm.

3: Searching for phrases or quotes with missing words

As someone who always forgets certain pieces of dialogues, I can really appreciate learning about this tip. Sometimes you hear Books, movies, book titles, etc. but you forget some of the words in that title, But now using the asterisk, Google can identify the words of the title you have forgotten and it can fill in the blanks with many different titles that fit what you are looking for. For example, if I’m in the mood to read the 2nd Harry Potter book but I only remember some of the words in the title, I can use this tip to find specifically what I was looking for. This also works well in Social Studies or English class when you forget moments in history.

Searching for Phrases with missing words in an incorrect manner:

I decided to test this tip in the incorrect way by searching “Something Something Strikes Back” clearly trying to search for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, but Google didn’t recognize that I forgot the name of the movie and decided to show me completely different options that I searched for, such as an episode of Family Guy or the definition of Strikes Back on the dictionary.

Searching for Phrases with Missing Words in A Correct Manner:

When I searched for “Something Something Strikes Back” I got completely the opposite of what I wanted to see, but when I searched for it with the asterisk, I got exactly what I was looking for. Not only did it direct me to websites such as IMDB and YouTube, but I also got the IMDB rating of the film, I got the percentage of Rotten Tomato’s and when it was released.

Clues to Look If A Website Is Providing Real Information

1: Currency

Probably the easiest clue to look for is when was the last time this site was edited. It’s very important to find out the date any website was last edited, especially when learning about Science or Socials Studies as information can be irrelevant as time changes. It’s very important to find out the date any website was last edited, especially

2: Relevance

It’s very important to figure out right away if the information you are reading has anything to do with what you are searching for. If the title says one thing but the writing says another, then maybe it’s not what you should be reading and just move on.

3: Authority

Figuring out who the author is to what you just read is a very important clue to finding out if what you read is even true. You should be able to find out if this author is a professional at what he is talking about. You should also figure out if the information is biased.

4: Accuracy

It’s probably not a good sign if the website you are reading is trying to convince you to believe their side of the situation. It’s also good to find out if the information you read on this website matches to the information you read on another website.

5: Purpose

Nothing in life is created without purpose. You should be able to figure out why this author made this article. If it was made for fun or to be silly, it’s probably not a good idea to use it for your research.

Personal Learning Network

1: What is a Personal Learning Network?

A Personal Learning Network is pretty much a way to communicate with other people. The reason it’s Personal is that you are the one deciding what network you are using and what people you are interacting with. The Reason it is a network is because everyone is linked to something else or other organizations. The reason its learning is because you are always learning something new when using these networks. The PLN’s I mostly use as a platform are YouTube, Instagram, and Google.

2A: My Personal Learning Network

My personal learning network began way back in 2008. Back in 2008, my cousin showed me a new website called YouTube, a place where you can watch or post whatever you want, whenever you want and whoever you want. This website was mind-blowing to me and we would watch hours and hours of different videos. This idea of a place where you could make funny videos and learn from other people making their funny videos was just amazing for me. As I grew up, YouTube did too, and I went from a website to a ground-breaking platform, which kickstarted people’s career. I have learned a lot from YouTube and if it wasn’t for this amazing website, I don’t think I would have become an actor. You see, back then I would watch funny skits that people would make and every video I watched the more I learned about Acting, Filming, Editing, and Lighting. Nowadays I’m back to watching the channel that made those skits and I’m learning a lot more than I never expected. With YouTube I can learn about making movies, I can communicate with the people making those videos. YouTube has changed my life, and I love it for that.

  1. I decided to make this flag because it represented both places that I come from. The Brazilian part of the flag represents where I was born and where lived in for 7 years. The Canadian part represents where I live now.
  2. I decide not to decided not to divide the flag into two because I thought it would look better if I mixed both of the flags together. I think both flags go really well together

Reflection:

I think this was my favorite Socials Studies project to work on because of how cool it was to use creative thinking. The best part of this project was taking the Brazilian flag (Which is where I was originally born) and the Canadian flag and mixing them together. I am really proud of what I’ve made and how I did it. I’m normally really bad at coloring but this time I did ok with the coloring.

Reflection:

Learning about the spinning jenny was very interesting. This project required a lot of critical thinking. I had to do a lot of research involving the spinning jenny to find good information. I didn’t really enjoy the research aspect of this assignment but it was still very unique compared to everything I’ve learned so far. It was also fun seeing what inventions looked like back in the days when there were no smartphones. I feel like I missed the opportunity to make this a poster of some kind.

Reflection:

I always enjoyed poems. Something about making poems was really fun for me. Making this poem was very relaxing, which was something I really needed. Although this was a relaxing assignment it was still really tough to write. I think the hardest part was making the poem sound good. This poem relates life and a boat ride and how sometimes it could be very relaxing and fun. I really hope people can relate to this poem and understand what I was trying to do. Creative thinking was a huge part of this assignment. It was a challenge connecting my poem to the image I picked.

WoodBug Science Project

Reflection:

This assignment was very challenging. I think the hardest part was thinking what experiment we could conduct. Critical thinking was a huge part of this assignment. At first, we decided to do an experiment on what type of food do wood bugs like the most, but we came to a realization that conducting this experiment would be really difficult. Lucas decided we could see if water affected a wood bugs path. I didn’t like this idea at first, but with a lot of research, the idea grew on me. Learning about wood bugs was very fun and entertaining. I think the best part of this assignment was searching for the wood bugs. I felt like Indian Jones when I was looking under rocks, potted plants, and under the stairs.

Merchant of Venice Tableau

Pictures:

Reflection:

This project involved a lot of creative thinking. Not only did my group have to come up with ideas on how to take the right pictures but we also had to think about the most important scenes of Act III, which there was a lot of them. This was a very fun assignment to work on because it was a lot of fun recreating the scenes. It was also a challenge agreeing to what scenes we wanted to do. In act III there were four major scenes, but we could only include 3 major scenes, so we decided to merge two scenes together which was a challenge making it look natural. I really enjoyed working on this assignment with a group and I learned more about what a tableau really is.

pressure on others and the distance between my house and the studio
7. How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so? I think the motion capture will take over most
of the realistic animation but even with that, animators will need to clean up the data. For the cartoony

performance and creative actions for the digital puppeteers.

one I am currently directing at his moment is pretty cool, with an AMAZING team of artists: Blaze and the

Student Reflections:
1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):
a) I really enjoyed the environment I was surrounded with.
b) I feel like bringing lifeless characters to life could be very fun and
entertaining.
c) The company seems to really care about its employees and welcomes new
creators.
2. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):
a) I feel like animating could be really stressful especially with all the

b) I'm not really a fan of being stuck in small office areas.
c) I'm also not a fan of learning how to use complicated software’s.

3. Is this job for you? Why or why not?

I don't really think this is the job for me. I'm more into live performance, such as acting or
possibly directing. Also, I'm really bad at giving people advice on how to improve.
4. Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post-secondary (after
high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).

I really enjoyed TYKTW day. I feel like TYKTWD is a nice way to see how real jobs work
and how fun they can actually be.
