Basketball

The extracurricular sport I play is basketball. I’ve been playing basketball in the TCYBA league for almost 5 years now. I play on a team with lots of my friends and I enjoy going to practices and games. I think the reason I enjoy it so much has to do with the amount of teamwork involved. You always need to be on your toes and be ready to receive the ball while also staying on your opponent if on defense. Basketball is important to me because it allows me to stay active and get involved in things while also doing something I find fun. When I first joined the team I didn’t know how to play basketball and I never wanted to get the ball because I was nervous of messing up and so I didn’t try and get open.

I’ve practiced a lot so now I’m more confident when I get the ball and I get open to receive the ball. Sometimes I go down to the rec center with my friends and shoot hoops. Sometimes I just practice with the basketball hoop in my driveway. I’m really happy that I decided to join the basketball team that I’m on now. All of the players on our team are happy to be playing and have good sportsmanship and energy at practices and at games. I’m excited to keep playing on this team and to see what the future holds for our team.

Name of your host: Michelle Mazzocchio                                    Relationship to you: Mom

The Interview: (ask your host these questions)

  1. What is your job title? Mortgage Broker at DLC Homeline Mortgages
  2. What is your job description? I arrange Mortgage financing for my clients

⦁    What are the duties and/or tasks you perform at your job? I handle all parts of arranging mortgage financing and refinancing for a variety of clients. This entails taking a mortgage application from clients, compiling the information into an application, pulling a credit bureau report, submitting the application for approval to various lenders, obtaining and forwarding the required backup documentation to the underwriters, liaising with lawyers and notaries to ensure that the mortgage funds on time. I deal with Banks, Credit Unions, Monoline Lenders & Private mortgage Lender’s

⦁    What qualifications do you have for this job in the following areas:

  1. a) training? I was previously a realtor for ten+ years and as a result I did not require any specific mortgage broker training because my real estate trading services licensing course gave me a license that covered both real estate and sub mortgage broker activities.
  2. b)  education? Real estate trading services licensing course through UBC, BCREA applied practice course, re-licensing education program courses every two years, legal update course review every two years.
  3. c) experience? I was a realtor for approximately ten years and worked for Royal Lepage Project Marketing Division, Windermere real estate & Sutton Group West Coast realty. As a mortgage professional I started with my company in 2006 and am still with the same company. They started out as Meridian Mortgage Services then became Mortgage Alliance Meridian Mortgage Services and are now known as DLC Homeline  Mortgages.
  4. d) skills and attributes (personal qualities)? Very organized, critical thinker, personable, caring.

⦁    What are some of the things you like about the job? I like that I work for myself and that I’m self-employed. I work from home and therefore control my hours of work .

⦁    What are some of the things you dislike about this job? Currently the amount of Federal Government rule changes which makes it much more difficult for people to qualify for mortgages.

⦁    How do you anticipate this job changing in the next 5 years or so? I believe that the Federal Government will continue to control the mortgage market but I believe that there will still and always be a need for mortgage brokers  to assist individuals looking for mortgage funds.  Mortgage Broker’s do nothing but mortgages,  whereas, employees of banks and credit unions do many different jobs and do not have specialized training in mortgage financing.  When clients get declined at their bank,  they will come to a Mortgage Broker who has access to many different types of lender’s to get the job done.

Other question (s): Do you enjoy your job? Yes, I really do, it is very gratifying to be able to help people navigate their way through the mortgage process.  It is a very stressful process for people to go through and I aim to make it stress free.

Student Reflections:

⦁    Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):

  1. a) This job gives you the opportunity to make a very good wage.
  2. b) You get to interact directly with people and make a big difference in their lives, by helping them get their dream home or consolidate their debts.
  3. c) You work from home, so you have lots of flexibility with work hours.

⦁    Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):

  1. a) It involves a lot of numbers and math related ratios which does not appeal to me.
  2. b) Since I could work from home, I would be in the same place a lot of the time and I would prefer a job where I’m active and moving around.
  3. c)  It seems like it would be a difficult job because things in this industry are constantly changing and I think it would be difficult to keep up.

⦁    Is this job for you? Why or why not?

I think this job would not be for me because it has a lot to do with numbers and I would find it confusing. It seems that you would be sitting at a desk and computer most of the day and that does not appeal to me. My ideal job would be something that provides me with a constant change of scenery and surroundings.

⦁    Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post-secondary (after high school) plans (education? training?, travel?, work?).  The value of spending the time with my mom was that I got to see more in depth her day to day operations and the things she has to deal with. I thought that I understood what she does but after spending time with her it surprised me how confusing the job really is. This has kind of shown me that finance is not a path that I want to take. It makes me realize that the key things that interest me in a career are finding something that provides a change in scenery and not a typical desk job. I still don’t know what I want to do when I graduate but this has given me some things to think about.
