Wood bug smell experiment!
By Sebastian Tulai and Younghoon Jung
Habitat:
Wood bugs generally live in parts of Europe and North America were the more dryer parts are found. they make there homes on trees and logs were they scavenger for food.
Hypotheses:
I think my experiment on the bugs will be on what smell they are attracted to. If they might be attracted to strong smells, then they might go to were the bad ones are.
Required Materials:
- Water and lemon juice
- Gloves
- Tray with paper towel
- Leaf’s and sticks
- Clipboard and pencils
Procedure:
Set up: We have a tray with one paper towel. On top are nine leaves, seven sticks, a cup of dirt, and five wood bugs. We placed them all on the tray, and we placed leaves, branches, and soil naturally.
- Prepare 5 bugs and some leaves, some soil and branches
- Place paper towel at bottom of the tray
- Put branches, leaves and soils naturally
- Drop some water and flavour water to different side
- Place a bug in the middle
- Observe which side the bug goes to
- Do 5 tries
Data Quantitative:
Columns: | Trial1 | Trial2 | Trial3 | Trial4 | Trial5 |
No smell | 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
Strong smell | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2 |
Data qualitative:
On our first try, some went to one direction and others went the opposite direction. On the second try, I examined that different bugs went the opposite direction of the first time they went to. On the third and fourth try, it stays the same as the second one. And on the fifth try, I noticed that the bugs were now scattering in every direction possible.
Data analysis graph: Number of bugs/ the smells
Conclusion:
Me, and my partner discovered that they don’t seemed to be attracted to the lemon flavored water because they don’t like sour smells like lemons of example. And if we put sweet smells like sugar or bananas, then they would go there all at once.
