Script: Act 1 Scene 1

2 min summary

Theseus and Hippolyta are discussing their wedding. Egeus arrives along with his daughter Hermia, complaining about her attitude and actions towards him pertaining to Lysander and Demetrius. He states that he has given Demetrius permission to marry his daughter, not Lysander. However, Lysander has been showering Hermia with love and affection behind Egeus’s back, gaining Hermia’s affection. Then he asks Theseus to have the privilege of Athens. Allowing Egeus to dispose of her whether that be to marry Demetrius or to kill her. Theseus doesn’t really want to do this, so he gives her 4 days to decide between three options, to pledge to be a nun, or to marry Demetrius, or to die. Hermia knows she should be listening to her father, but she tells Theseus that she loves Lysander so much. Theseus leaves and asks Demetrius and Egues to join him, leaving Lysander and Hermia to come up with a plan to run away together. They share their plan with Helena. Helena decides to tell this news to Demetrius, wanting him to realize what kind of person Hermia really is.

AT: (Theseus) Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour, Draws on apace.

A: (Hippolyta) The moon shall behold the night of our solemnities.

AT: (Egeus) Come I with complaint, Against my daughter Hermia. Stand forth, Demetrius. This man hath my consent to marry her. Stand forth, Lysander. This man hath bewitched the bosom of my child.

AT: (Theseus) What say you, Hermia? Be advised.

O: My soul consents not to give sovereignty,
I frown upon Demetrius.

AT: (Theseus) Either to die the death or to abjure, forever the society of men. Therefore, Hermia, question your desires.

AM: (Lysander) I am, my lord, as well derived as he, as well possessed. My love is more than his. He made love to Helena, and won her soul.

AT: (Theseus) I must confess that I have heard so much. But To fit your fancies to your father’s will, Or else the law of Athens yields.

AM: (to Hermia) I have a widow aunt and she respects me as her only son. There, Hermia, may I marry thee, and to that place the sharp Athenian law cannot pursue us.

O: My good Lysander!
Tomorrow truly will I meet with thee
Fair Helena! Whither away?

A: (Helena) Call you me “fair”? Demetrius loves your fair.

AM: (to Helena) Tomorrow night through Athens’ gates have we devised to steal.

A: (Helena) I will go tell Demetrius of fair Hermia’s flight.
