Personal Awareness and Responsibility

Whenever I’m feeling discouraged about my work or performance, I like to step back and take a break so I do not overwork myself. Looking back at my previous successes and things that I am proud of also helps put me back into a positive mindset. I destress by listening to my favourite music and by watching television shows or movies. Once I felt motivated again, I would continue to work towards improvement.

One of my big learning goals would be to get accepted into the University of British Columbia (UBC). My future goals are to earn a degree in pharmacy and to ultimately become a pharmacist. I chose these goals to challenge myself so that, in the end, I can be successful. As of right now, I am going to work on these goals by studying hard and maintaining good grades throughout high school. I also plan to take biology, chemistry, and physics in grade eleven to enhance my understanding of the sciences, since my goal requires vast knowledge on this subject.

Summary of Article

During these hard times, many people are doing their best to spread positivity and happiness. In the article I listed above, it explained that many people around the world, specifically Europeans are “singing health workers’ praises every night from windows”. The health workers saw this and responded with a video, where they are in health facilities, wearing masks, and holding up a sign that read, “We are all in this together”.

Reflection

I think the article was written to spread awareness to those who haven’t contributed in thanking health care workers yet. It was important enough for me to share because I also agree with the article and everyone should know that there are people out there that are still spreading happiness to others during these times. This act of kindness has improved the moods of health care workers and other civilians and gave hope.

Extracurricular Activity: Martial Arts

An extracurricular activity that I do is mixed martial arts at Gibson MMA. I usually go from Monday to Thursday for about 45 minutes. This is a combination of kickboxing, grappling, and overall conditioning. I wouldn’t consider myself a very sporty person, but when it comes to martial arts, I’m quite active. I’ve been doing this sport for as long as I can remember, starting from when I was about seven years old.

I enjoy this activity because it is a great stress and anger reliever. Whenever I’m stressed about something, I always feel so much better after class. I also like this sport because I can interact with other people and make new friends, since I don’t take a personal class. Because we are paired with others for sparring and wrestling, it is necessary to create bonds and to be respectful to each other. Another reason why I enjoy this activity is because it gives you a great exercise.

On a daily basis, the instructors give you a warm-up, then we transition into any kind of intense martial art, such as kickboxing, grappling, or working on various techniques. In conclusion, I think MMA is a great activity that helps relieve stress, provides an abundant amount of exercise, and gives you the opportunity to meet new friends.

Student Reflections:

  1. Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):

  3. b) I could establish my own hours and not have to worry about getting in trouble for anything
  4. c) I would have more privileges than any of the other workers and earn a higher salary
  5. Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):
  6. a) There would be a lot of pressure and weight put on my shoulders. I would have to maintain everything and make sure there are no problems at all times

  8. c) Having to deal with problems caused by the other workers or customers.
  9. Is this job for you? Why or why not?

I don’t think this job is for me. Although it’s beneficial being the owner/manager of a business, the job itself doesn’t seem like something I would enjoy, especially if it’s for the rest of my life. In my opinion, managing a restaurant doesn’t seem like the most interesting occupation I could take. I much would rather do something that interests me and makes me want to go to work.

Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans(education?, training?, travel?, work?).

The TYKTW experience gives us the ability to be open to many work opportunities, even the least expected ones. It broadens our minds to potential jobs we might take after high school. The TYKTW experience also helps us develop ideas about our future plans earlier, which gives us some indication on how much training and experience is needed for a certain job.
