Digital Footprint-Mikaela

Hi, I’m Mika, I will be talking about internet safety, like what is safe and what’s not safe.

When I searched my full name, I did not see any pictures of myself on the internet.   All I saw were other people.

Consequences of Online Behaviour

1. Your digital footprint can affect your future opportunities if your co-worker, boss, or anyone in your company sees an inappropriate picture of you or an inappropriate website you went on.  For example teens should not be visiting such as gambling, alcohol, or mature gaming sites.

It can also affect it by saying something rude in a comment to someone, and maybe losing their trust and friendship and it can prevent you from getting any job at all.  For example, one word to start off a conversation could turn into an argument and could cause lots of people to be hurt and the one person who wrote that message to get in trouble.

If you have profile picture on any social media, then make sure its not inappropriate, because then sometimes people could react badly.  For example, if someone has a inappropriate profile on any social media, sometimes that means people are looking for attention, or that person with that profile picture isn’t looking for that, but some people might take it the wrong way.

Security

2. You can ask a teacher or a trusted adult if you see anything inappropriate online, and how to get rid of it.  Guidelines for teens to follow online include the following:

  • Never post something inappropriate

Because something bad could happen for example, people taking the post the wrong way and easily offended somehow, because people think differently so its a good idea to make sure you think about what you post.

  • Don’t post just because someone says you have to

Because of course no one should tell anyone to do something they do not want to do.  The possibility of someone actually starting to do everything someone says to, will not be too good cause sometimes people start influencing the other person and that person starts doing whatever it is they are being told to do.

  • Limit your screen time to prevent you from visiting unsafe sites

There are two very good reasons why to limit your screen time.  Limiting your screen time is good for your eye sight and to prevent you from going to an unsafe sight.  It is important that the sight(s) you are looking at doesn’t effect your grades at school by getting low marks, and by limiting your screen time you’d have lots of time by doing something more important, except if having screen time is necessary like homework(computer & paper).

  • Always try to visit only age-appropriate websites

Visiting age appropriate websites is a good strategy for research you may need for an essay for example.  In general people should only go to their age appropriate websites because there are reasons why there age restricted, and that reason is because kids and teens shouldn’t be seeing anything inappropriate or influenced by any thing on the internet.

Caution

3. I would pass on the information to other students, to stay safe on the internet, and other applications. I would advice students to tell their parents to check their device often to see if any inappropriate sites have been added.

I would also tell students that the internet can be a very dangerous place if you didn’t use it carefully.  It needs to be taken seriously and you must always make sure you keep your private information safe.

Never post anything personal, such as phone number, address, or any pictures showing where you live or where you go to school. And maybe show some examples of some bad things that have happened on the internet.

  1. Good job on completing your Digital Footprint assignment. Here is your evaluation:

Message shows a good understanding of your digital footprint. Media works well with your message but the two could complement each other better. You can improve this by adding additional explanation to your points in addition to improving the overall presentation of your document using bullets, headings etc. 3.5/5

  2. I like how you have used headings and bullets. This is a lot cleaner and easier to read. You do, however, still need to add more information to sections such as the strategies to stay safe online. Go into depth with each of the points and fully explain them. You could also talk about what you found about yourself after a google search of your name and could even add some examples (links to news articles about people who had good footprints or were punished for having bad footprints).

  3. Good job on adding the additional information. This provides a much better understanding of how to stay safe online and monitor your digital footprint. Good work. 4.5/5
