Reflection:

After watching the video, I was shocked to see how much information and many unseemly things that the volunteer’s digital footprints came up with a simple google search. It was also interesting to see how they claimed that they didn’t post the things founds. One of the volunteers claimed they put unflattering photos they took on private, and another volunteer found photos tagged to his main account giving the impression that he had a “party animal alter ego”. Since I haven’t had a lot of jobs looking over my digital footprint, it was new news to me that the majority of jobs I might encounter will check my footprint. To see how my digital footprint looks, I did the activity shown in the video and google searched myself. Thankfully when I searched my name I found virtually nothing on me or any of my social medias, weirdly the things that came up were mostly pictures of a girl with a distinctive gap between her front teeth. From doing this experiment I’ve learned many ways that your digital footprint can affect you in real life, though I don’t have a digital footprint I presume ways negative it could impact me in the future.

How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least two examples.

Your digital footprint could affect you by giving positive and negative impression to those who will give you future opportunities. Positively, your footprint can be one of the reasons why a future opportunity will recognize you. Though if they find negative things on your footprint it could put that opportunity in risk.  An example of an opportunity token away because of their digital footprint can be represented from real life Donald De La Haye. Donald De La Haye had a scholarship at the University of Central Florida but due to his use on YouTube his scholarship was token away. Donald broke one of the school’s rules of using his status to make money, in this case his viral YouTube channel. Unlike Donald’s mistake through being viral on YouTube and having a positive footprint may give you future opportunities. An example of this could be the well-known Grumpy Cat. From the cats viral YouTube channel, the owners got many opportunities for the cat. Starring in commercials, in TV shows, and having her own Christmas movie (it was filled in the Coquitlam Centre)! The two examples give an idea of how your digital footprint can affect your future positively and negatively.

Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

Three strategies that you can help you keep your digital footprint positive is

One: Be aware of what you post

When posting anything make sure it’s appropriate and safe. To help you make this happen can be thinking beforehand. Think about what you post the post is saying about yourself and how its reflecting on your digital footprint. This is one of the most important ways to make you have a positive digital footprint.

Two: Be aware who you follow and what your friends post about you

Who you follow can show sides of you that you might not want on your digital footprint. Be aware that you are confident that you want to follow an account. Another thing friends and family members who have social media might want to take pictures with you and post them. When they do this make sure they have your full consent and consider what the picture says about you.

Three: Make sure you are on the right settings

A lot of people who use social media are usually oblivious to the settings they are on. When you are aware of the settings you are on, you are in full control of your page and that is one of the best ways to manage your footprint. When being oblivious to your settings you could be letting posts be posted without you knowing and once one thing is on the internet it doesn’t go away. Once again make sure you understand your settings!

What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

Information that I learned and would like to pass to other students is the importance of the digital footprint. A lot of students don’t consider what they post online and just do what they want. This could affect their future and opportunities can be taken away from them which isn’t far through my eyes. I could go about telling fellow students by showing them my website and maybe help them in social media situations. I could help them make decisions on what to post if they want my opinion. Also, overall this assignment has been an eye opener for students who don’t know a lot about their digital footprint and how to manage it. Now many people in our grade are aware of the effects of our digital footprints.
