In the short story “The Runner”, a boy named Arif from Sudan, moves to a small town in Saskatchewan. He is very fast when it comes to running, but a popular kid named Tony is quite jealous and doesn’t like the new kid. Their coach teaches Tony that he cannot judge or assume someones advantages from when he assumed that Arif was Ethiopian, or Kenyan and that was the reason he was so fast at running. Their coach then says to them that they should both spend more time together to get to know each other better. Tony brings Arif with him to go hunting and Tony brings his rifle with him, but when Arif sees Tony’s rifle, it reminds him of his father and he gets very emotional. Arif tells Tony a very strong and powerful story of his that ties the two of them to become friends. Tony then realizes what kind of pain Arif has been through and tells Arif a very important message, he tells Arif that he doesn’t need to run anymore.
The main characters in this story are Arif and Tony.
The story takes place in a small town in Saskatchewan.
