Student Reflections:
- Give three reasons why you would like this job (be specific):
- a) One thing that I noticed about being a lawyer is that they get to speak in front of people especially when they are in court. Many people are afraid of public speaking, but I have always enjoyed it. Lawyers question witnesses in open court and make submissions to the judge and jury during trials. For my dad, he does a lot of educational semanars related to employment law and human rights. He also has lots of one on one meetings with clients and witnesses.
- b) Another thing that I would enjoy about this job is that it’s challenging intellectually. Although it is not physical, you are still being challenged and you are never bored. I really enjoy that this job is not repetitive and there is not an everyday routine. If there was routine I would be bored and get sick of the job very quickly. You also are helping many people everyday. Primarily, my dad helps out with people who have lost their job and other human rights laws. He helps so many people and tries to make their situation better.
- c) I also like that this job is a self-employed job. For my dad, this means that he sets his own hours. This is beneficial because you can change your schedual depending on other commitments, such as dealing with family. Being self-employed also means that you have no boss meaning you don’t always have someone telling you what to do. The flexibility of this job works out great for my family because my dad can still run and spend time with us and still keep up with his job.
- Give three reasons why you would not like this job (be specific):
- a) One reason I would not like this job is that you rarely get to leave your desk and you are on a computer all day. For me, this would not work because I enjoy doing things that are physical and I have a hard time sitting still. When you are on a computer all day you can develop bad eyesight, carpel tunnel syndrome and even depression.
- b) Another reason I would not like this job is that I would never escape the job. For my dad I see that he is always sending emails and making phone calls outside of the office. It’s not the type of job where you can go home after a long day and all your stress goes away. You have constant stress and your job consumes your life. Even on weekends, holidays and vacation you are still concerned about what is happening at the office.
- c) The last reason is that you have to get certain things done in a hurry causing a lot of stress and pressure. For example, if there is a transaction its subject to strict timelines and everything including paperwork, money exchanged, and things filled has to be done at a precise time.
- Is this job for you? Why or why not?
This job is not right for me because it has never been a dream of mine to sit at a desk and send emails and make phone calls all day. As I mentioned before I struggle to sit still and it’s not something, I can do all day, every day. Some aspects of this job interest me such as trial, and that inspires me to become a lawyer, but it’s not a job that you can go into and only like it a little bit to pursue. I would also not like to live the rest of my life in stress. I understand that with every job comes stress, but I would not like it to this extent.
Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post-secondary (after high school) plans(education?, training?, travel?, work?).
It helps decide what I want to pursue as a career after high school. It helps me decide whether or not I want to work in an office or not. This also helps me narrow down what I would like to study in university and what university is best for me. For example, if the thing I want to study in university is only available at some schools, I may have to travel.
In these photos, you can see some conference rooms at my dads work and the outside of the building. We also went to the court house during the day to watch a murder trial.
