Text and Subtext Video

DISCLAIMER: THIS TEXTING STORY HAS ALMOST NO CORRELATION TO MY STORY NOW. I’VE EDITED AND CHANGED THE NEW AND REVISED STORY, THIS TEXTING STORY IS MY OLD STORY IDEA.

Core Competencies:

Creative thinking/Communication

-I get ideas when I play. My ideas are fun for me and make me happy.

When I first heard that short stories are going to be a subject, I was excited. I love exploring my own world inside my imagination, and I can finally write it all down as a story. Personally, I like a series of stories and fictional creatures called SCPS. All the way back to grade 7 I was interested, and now I can play around with the universe(s) of SCP and make my own stories/ideas. I’ve always wanted to make a story about an SCP, let alone making anything SCP related and handing it in to a teacher. I chose to write about SCP 001. SCP 001 is a phenomenon when exposure to sunlight turns people into zombie-like slush. When I played around with this idea and some text from the actual story, I came up with my own story about SCP 001. In the end, writing about something I like is a pleasant experience, and I really enjoyed writing this story.

-I build on others’ ideas and add new ideas of my own.

As explained earlier, I explored the universe of SCPs. SCP 001 is an already written story, and I used some of the plots in the story, changed it up and made my own version of the story. Unlike the story on the website however, I’ve tweaked the setting of the story, a plot, and made the ending have a purpose, which is punishing the character’s humanity, curiously looking at files instead of leaving the area immediately. In the end, he dies for sticking around, all because of his curiosity. To add, the high-level English used on the website helped me form a better story as Mr. Smith taught us to copy sentences but re-write them in our own words, but the sentence structure would remain the same.

-I make my ideas work or I change what I am doing.

I went through 2 iterations of this story. The first version of the story had some awkward dialogue and the plot went nowhere, so I decided to re-write the story. The second version was based more on the actual story on the website, but it came too close to the original. So, I changed up the plot, changed the setting, added more meaning to the story and made a backstory for the character, to give him some humanity, and to make the reader feel somewhat connected to the character.

-I give, receive, and act on feedback.

Today, we got to peer edit our stories and I received some valuable feedback which would help me improve my story. I acted on that feedback and made changes to my story to improve the quality of it. Not only that, I gave out some feedback to those I’ve peer edited, and generally improved the quality of all our stories.

Things I can work on:

-I build on others’ ideas and add new ideas of my own.

Even if I’ve changed up the whole plot and setting of the story and more, I still feel like I could’ve made an original story. Possibly in the future, I can create a whole new SCP itself, and make a story around that. Not only would I enjoy the process of writing the story, I would also enjoy making the SCP which would be in my story. To correct and prevent this, I can once again explore my imagination and try to come up with a new and original idea in the same field of things I like, such as special forces, SCP, games, etc. and write about that instead.

American Revolution Project

Script + Notes:

Narrator: Justin, Ryan, Jordan

Soldier: Ryan

Civilians: Jordan, Justin

Judge: Jordan

Why did the massacre happen?

  • Because the British had instituted a number of new taxes on the American colonies
  • The taxes included tea, glass, paper, paint and lead.
  • Protesters were protesting the British occupation of their city sent to Boston to enforce taxation measures
  • The massacre had gotten 5 people killed and 6 people injured
  • The massacre occurred in the evening of March 5, 1770 King Street
  • Just before the shooting began at the Boston Massacre, a British soldier struck a young boy with his rifle’s butt for insulting a British officer. Captain Thomas Preston and eight British soldiers came to his aid. Private Montgomery was hit with a stick and fired into the crowd
  • Crowd had been dispersed, a total of 13 people were arrested. 8 of them being british officers.
  • Some results of the massacre caused massive public outcry against british rule and further pushed the idea that the british empire was evil.
  • Britain needed money due to defending the US from the french, but now that they had none, they started taxing the people in the States to gain more money. Lots of British people higher up that could make decisions secretly hated the new taxes on tea and many other imported objects.
  • This was a huge opening for writers and newspaper writing because of propaganda being spread to fear and hate the british.
  • After the “murders”, the soldiers were put on trial, and as their defendant, they hired John Adams, who was a well respected gentleman that was very anti-stamp act, but he also would enforce the law.
  • The court case would put Adams’ reputation at risk, but in the end impacted him much less than expected. 6 of the soldiers were proven not guilty, and 2 were proven on manslaughter, and if they committed any other crime, the sentence would be harsher.

Script:

(Jordan)Narrator: It was a cold winter day. The pressure was on. The british were heavily taxing the american people and they were definitely not happy. It only took 1 person to start it all.

Justin, angry and disappointed mood: “Oh god sakes, are you soldiers stupid? I had to pay so much money to taxes and I don’t even know if I can last 2 more years.”

Ryan: “I’m sorry sir, but we cannot do anything. It’s the government’s decision of making the taxes.”

Jordan, angry voice: “Only idiot buggers would make those kinds of decisions, like what were ya even thinkin’”

Ryan, British accent: “Hey!, you better take you filthy mouth somewhere else, you won’t like what’s coming next.”

(Justin and Jordan angrily scream at the british officer) YA WAT MATE WHAT ARE YA SAYING MATE YOU WANNA GO MATE? AH? U WANNA GO AH?

(Ryan) Narrator: The pressure was getting real, the soldiers were angry and so were the people. Britain needed money due to defending the US from the French but now, they have none.

Jordan, more masculine voice😂: “Don’t you dare tell me what to do bugger!”

Justin pretends to be little child; make sure to sound whiny: “Yeah you serve no right to order us”

Ryan: “ Oh wow, even a child is talking back, some rude manners there!”

Justin: “Shut up moron”

Ryan: action: hits rifle butt at Justin’s face, “don’t you dare tell me to shut up bloody scrub

Jordan, Justin pretends to be soldiers: try to break up Ryan’s fight with the little boy

*when fight breaks up, civilians form snowballs and throws them at the soldiers*

Ryan: “ OI, Stop it you bloody scrubs !”

Jordan: Throw it harder! Make sure they BLEED. WE HAVE PLENTY OF SNOW AND ICICLES TO THROW”

*People start to freak out and ryan shoots Jordan and Justin*

Ryan: I told you not to mess with me, bugger.

(Justin) Narrator: “Later on that day, the people of boston saw a newspaper released about the boston massacre. It was heavily exaggerated, which caused the people of America to see this event as an atrocity committed against the people of boston.

(Ryan) Narrator: After the “murders”, the soldiers were put on trial, and as their defendant, they hired John Adams, who was a well respected gentleman that was very anti-stamp act, but he also would enforce the law. Adams was the perfect defendant for the soldiers who shot the innocent civilians. They moved to a court and it was packed top to bottom.

Core Competencies:

Creative Thinking/Communication

Communication:

-I give, receive, and act on feedback.

When we were creating this project, we asked Mr. Chaffee for feedback and reviewing. He told us that 30 seconds of a skit would be too short, and we should shoot for around 3 minutes. Our group decided that the Boston massacre is a short event, so we decided to add narration of what is going on in the scene, and add the court case alongside the Boston Massacre. Without Mr. Chaffee’s feedback and advice, we would have a dull, boring 30 second skit, but we managed to edit and act on his advice to create a fully-baked, 3 minute presentation. To add, Jordan and Ryan both had great ideas for the project, such as adding a whole new scene of a courtroom and adding Sam Adams to the skit and assigning our roles. I we all gave each other feedback on how we should put them into the skit without making things awkward such as merging 2 scenes in one, and acted upon that feedback to each other.

-I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group.

Furthermore, I took the role of researching and narrating the story. My group members would type out the information on the google docs and do some research, while I looked up information and came up with script ideas such as adding narration to fill the plot and add time to the overall product. I can admit, when we took this project home, I didn’t do as much as my group members, but I put my part into the project by coming up with ideas and making sure it is historically correct. For the presentation, Our group had some trouble on memorizing the lines for the characters, so we all helped each other along with giving them signs to start saying their line, and took our responsibility to make sure the skit was moving smoothly.

-I get ideas when I play. My ideas are fun for me and make me happy.

When we were thinking of props for the skit, I was thinking specifically of the snowballs being thrown at the officers (which is pretty hilarious) and I thought, “We’re not throwing ice in the class, what can we use as a substitute?” and I thought if we crunch up paper balls, we can throw them with some distance. Best part is, paper is white just like snowballs, so it would be a crafty and fun alternative to actual snow or ice. To add, Jordan had an idea to use papers as a prop for the court scene, so we can get away with writing the script on a piece of paper without anyone knowing. That gave me an idea to use small queue cards for writing notes about the script, and looking at them when help is needed.

Things to improve on:

This project is a 3 man group, and i’ll admit, I didn’t put as much work as I could’ve. At school, I did my part and did the research and made ideas, but when it was sent home as homework, I only wrote 1 or 2 lines for the characters. A way I can make sure this doesn’t happen again, and to add more work to the group is to contact my group members and stay in touch so I don’t run out of ideas on how to support my fellow peers and add to the project in general.

Merchant of Venice Comic Strip

Core Competencies:

Critical thinking/Creative thinking

To begin, I’m not a very good artist. When I was given this assignment, I thought i would receive a terrible mark because it would look sloppy and it’s not even my fault. Luckily, I used my critical thinking skills to find my way around this. I recalled that there’s a comic making website I could use, and that is when I used my first core competency. The issue arrived when I realized I didn’t have a copy of the Merchant of Venice. I did some research and I found that MIT hosts a website that has the full story on it. 2 roadblocks cleared. Some of the text in the story however, was covering the characters, so I crunched down some of the text to make it fit and look less akward.

This brings me to my next skill, Creative thinking. Although i had the specific lines the characters said, I couldn’t find some of the text I was looking for, so I creatively (tried) to use old English and fill in the slots that needed text, but didn’t have any to work off of. Another aspect of the skill used would be the character customization. I didn’t have the options to specifically create my own characters except 1, so I needed to improvise. Thanks to my Creative thinking skills, I managed to get a somewhat good re-creation of the characters.

Lastly, Something I need to work on is communication. I was originally assigned this assignment as a group project, yet I didn’t have much communication with my partner and he didn’t say 2 words to me back, so I decided to do this project alone. I feel like if i had the courage and dedication to speak and get his contacts down, we would’ve worked faster and more fun, yet I just stood quiet and did it myself. Overall, this project helped me find my strengths and weaknesses, and I can use these experiences to my advantage in the future.

Reflection:

Creative thinking/Critical Thinking

Developing ideas: I make my ideas work or change what I’m doing.

The initial plan for this project was to test and see if woodbugs can see color. We did this by placing meatballs on colored squares, and getting them to eat the meatballs and see the colored squares. Once the woodbugs ran this test a couple times, we would remove the meatballs and observe if the woodbugs would go to the colored square as an indicator of food. Of course, this plan was flawed as the woodbugs completely ignored the meatballs and had no idea what the squares were, so we needed to come up with a better plan. This is where I used my creative thinking skills to generate a new idea to persevere and create a new plan and project to solve this problem. We decided that we should see which type of food woodbugs prefer the most, and we went with apples as fruit, meatballs as meat, and potatoes as vegetables. This new and improved plan worked as the woodbugs ate the apple and potato, and ignored the meatballs. This got us the conclusion of woodbugs preferring fruits and vegetables over meat.

-I use my experiences with various steps and attempts to direct my future work.

Because I learned about our mistakes in this project (which is not planning ahead enough and creating a flawed plan) I now know to think more carefully and do more research on said topic. I can use these experiences and mistakes to guide my future work so I don’t make this mistake again.

Develop and Design: I can monitor my progress and adjust my actions to make sure I achieve what I want.

Getting the woodbugs to eat the food was rough. They would often go around the pieces and in general, ignore it. We didn’t know what to do until I decided to take the tweezers and move the woodbugs to the pieces of food. They still ignored it, but a skill I needed was to be patient. I was monitoring the progress of the project, and checking if it would go anywhere. A little bit of time and presto! The woodbugs started to eat the pieces of food. It took some time and patience, but adjusting my actions from just waiting around doing nothing to taking initiative to moving the woodbugs closer got us ahead of the project and therefore, completed it on time.

Generating Ideas: -I build on others’ ideas and add new ideas of my own, or combine others’ ideas in new ways to create new things or solve straightforward problems.

This whole project was based off of an idea that the myth busters had, training goldfish to eat food to test if they have a memory span of more than 7 seconds. This is why our whole project was based on food, and used the same concept as the myth busters. As it turned out, that idea didn’t work, so we used our revised plan as said earlier.

Communication:

Explain/recount and reflect on experiences and accomplishments

-I give, receive and act on feedback.

Mrs. Prosperi-Porta suggested to us that our experiment didn’t have to be completely trashed, and we can make up a new idea based on food because we already had access to it. This feedback allowed us to revise and make up a new experiment and helped us succeed.

Collaborate to plan, carry out, and review constructions and activities

-I can work with others to achieve a common goal; I do my share.

For this entire project, I needed to have skills in communication to get my idea of the project across. Zach and I were tossing ideas around and communicating to each other about our own ideas. We came to a conclusion of a plan and starting working on it. Both of us are afraid of bugs, and it required some teamwork and effort to move the woodbugs. In the end, we managed to put in on the tray without getting a heart attack, thanks to our communication and teamwork.

Things I need to work on:

-I have deliberate strategies for quieting my conscious mind (e.g. walking away for
a while, doing something relaxing, being deliberately playful) so that I can be more creative.

When something goes wrong, I often panic, and my mind starts going crazy to find a way to fix the problem. Obviously we managed to fix our issue with the project, but it wasn’t all that efficient and could’ve bought us more time if we were calm and thought carefully about our next steps. A way I can improve this is to control myself, calm down and make actions to calm myself down such as regulate my breathing, fidgeting with something or more.

-I deliberately learn a lot about something (e.g. by doing research, talking to
others or practicing) so that I am able to generate new ideas or ideas just pop into my
head.

As stated earlier, the initial project we thought of was flawed due to lack of research and planning ahead. I can fix this problem by putting more effort into the planning and researching phase in projects, and following said plan to create a successful project.

-I can show if I like something or not.

When it comes to group projects, I am very meek. I don’t like to go against what my group members say, often leading to bad ideas or misunderstandings. I can solve this problem by trying to boost my morale and self-esteem to be more confident towards my group members and others.

Industrial Revolution Invention Project

Explain your invention and how it is going to improve people’s lives.

Because organs are limited and expensive, people don’t get the transplants they need. But thanks to our product, organs would be a somewhat affordable producible resource.

Why did you choose the invention that you created?

I was talking about this concept with my dad before, and I thought it would save lives and be profitable, so I used this concept in this project.

What makes your invention: economic, ethical and environmentally friendly?

Economic: we reduce the price of organs and make it more affordable, lowering the overall price for organs Ethical: We originally tried to use our product on rats, but that was inhumane, so we decided to develop our own tissue (the TFMP) and save lives. Environmental: this product does not emit any carbon or waste, cutting down on unhealthy environmental problems.

Why should people invest/purchase your invention over the other inventions in the invention fair?

Our product has a large profit margin, each organ fetching at least $100,000 for each organ, and investing $10,000 would get you your money back with 1 sell.

What was the hardest part of this project?  How did you/would you overcome this?

We had minimal problems with this project, just some typos and program glitches, but overall, the project was fun and simple to complete.

How realistic is your invention and what would be the issue with creating your invention?

Our invention is somewhat realistic as stem cells may be able to grow out organs, but chemical-balognea is completely made up, and the issue would be the organs would take too long to grow without chemical balognea.

How well did your group work?  What were the problems {and how did you overcome them} and what worked well?

Both Jordan and I worked well together. Problems we had were Jordan not working as hard as he could’ve, but he was catching up on other work. The effort became 60% me and 40% Jordan, yet Jordan still put in the effort we needed in the group. I overcame this downside by doing half of this project, and leaving the rest for jordan. I still needed to help him out a little, as the program hated us, yet we overcame the difficulties and had a nice result.

Give your project a letter grade and explain why it deserves that mark.

I would give our project a B+. We put in good efforts and worked hard, but I think just an infographic wasn’t enough. We could’ve made an info chart giving more information about the project, but it seemed like the infographic was just enough as we racked up second place in the investment fair.

Evaluate all group members {including yourself}, give them a letter grade and explain why you gave the mark that you did.

I would give myself a B+ and jordan a B. we both put in the efforts we needed, although I did a little more. Overall, this project was fun to do, and we really explored our creative sides of our mind.

Creative/Critical Thinking:

I feel like we used creative thinking for this project the most because we needed to think about the whole concept of harvesting organs and getting around the flaws of doing so with our technology such as inventing the chemical-balgonea. Only recently I found out this technology exists, but at the level we interpreted it, it’s way more advanced than what we have now. We also used a little bit of critical thinking as we wanted to use some logic with this project to make it somewhat realistic such as the stem cell theory. When we came across some problems, we would try to do something new to covercome that issue, such as when we had to come up with somkething to house the stem cells, we thought of using rats. We later thought that it would be animal cruelty, so we developed a whole new invention called the TFMP.

As for the presentation, communication was a key competency we both required. We were answering many simple questions such as Who we are selling this product to, or does this product have sales, but we did come across some complicated questions such as the risks of compatibility with our organs, and with our previous knowledge of our stem cell theory and communication, we overcame these complicated questions. To add, communication is a key skill in presentation because of coordincation. Without it, we would talk over each other, not know the specific information about the project and more.

Outside of the project, when we were working on it at home, I feel like I needed to work on communication as I wasn’t very clear on our parts in the project and I ended up doing more of the project than him. In the end, the lack of communication at home wasn’t that bad, we still could’ve worked more effieciently and because of this event, I now know I should communicate and organize more efficiently to have more efficient work time. To conclude, my key strengths would be critical and creative thinking, and I have some skills in the communication range, but I should work on some parts of that field such as organization and a little bit of coordination.

Costs:

TFMP = ~$10 per inch

Robotic Surgery Arms = ~$2 million

Factory = ~$1.5 million

Equipment = ~$4,000

Medical License = ~$1,700

Extracuriccular Activities

I’ve always taken some interest in martial arts. I thought it was a necessity to know self-defense, and I’ve asked my parents to sign me up for martial arts. Judo specifically had stuck with me for a while as my friends signed up alongside me as well. I started in the children’s class and it was an hour long. I mainly learned basic hold-downs and throws, otherwise, we would be playing games. As I moved up the ranks, my friends and I were moved to the junior’s class. Everything changed. Class was now an hour and thirty minutes, the teachers were more strict and we were actually doing exercise alongside learning more complex throws, hold-downs and arm bars. When I hit the green belt, I quit.

It was pretty hard for me to enjoy judo at first when I was moved to the juniors class. The teachers were tougher, the drills were more complex and we were required to attend tournaments to advance to the next belt. It was a little bit of a rocky start until 1 of my closest friends, Dylan signed up. From then on, we had someone to talk to, partner up with and most importantly, crush him because he was a newbie. Even if going to judo forced me to get off my butt and exercise, it was enjoyable at times when I had nothing to do, and I wanted to see my friends. But as time moved forward, my Ski and Snowboard schedule leaked into my judo schedule and slowly we stopped attending.

My friend Dylan:

Learning Judo is important to me because it gave me a good base to start with in martial arts. I’ve learned to break-fall, hold people down, throw them and got exercise out of it. Because I know judo, it gave me a confidence boost around in public, because I can take care of myself in a fight, and instinctively protect myself from injuries. This was also the sport I’ve invested the most time in, going to tournaments and making my friendships closer in the club. In the end, Judo helped me out both physically, and as a person.

Take Your Kid To Work Day 2019

This year I decided to get into graphic design. I’ve always wanted to create my own art by mixing and matching photos and editing them, then showing them off to my friends and family. I really enjoy making my own little edits to photos but that got me thinking: “What if i can use this skill in my career?”

Graphic design is making visual concepts through software or by hand to communicate a concept to consumers. The way this information can be delivered can be through posters, banners, art and more. But, what are the requirements for the job, and why am I passionate about it?

Work Environment:

What a Graphic design studio can look like below:

Graphic designers normally work in an office space, which I personally favor because I’m very used to sitting at my computer playing games, doing homework, or browsing all with my own privacy. Sometimes, designers may have their own personal studio and I am not a very extroverted person, so the added layer of privacy is nice to have. The average work time for a graphic designer is 37 hours a week (about 5 hours a day) and the time table is very comfortable to me because sitting at my computer for more than 8 hours a day just drawing or making artwork would get very boring very fast.

Most of the work graphic designers do is meeting with clients, drawing or editing photos and selling them.

Educational Requirements:

Graphic designers are normally required to have a degree in Visual arts specialization. This specialization can be in graphic design, commercial art and graphic communications or cartooning. To get a better chance of being hired, however, it is recommended to have a bachelor’s or higher degree on a different field.

Salaries & Annual pay:

Thanks to Neuvoo.ca, I managed to find some information about the salaries plus the tax. On entry, workers make about $27,307 a year. Plus tax, that would be decreased to $23,267 ($14 per hour, plus tax: $11.93). On the other side of the coin, the most experienced are estimated to make $77,903 and $57,831 plus tax. ($29.66 per hour plus tax).

My Passion:

When I was 11, I found a genre of art and music called Vaporwave. I found the visuals and audio mesmerizing as I’ve never even seen or heard anything like it. For 3 years I’ve wanted to make my own art based on that genre, until i got Photoshop and Paint.net. The very first edit I made, was a mashup of retro style photos in an mspaint window from windows 95. I titled it “Tranquility” because of the 3d text I put on the photo reading “Tranquility.” Here is a photo of it below:

It wasn’t very hard to make and i’ll admit, this isn’t as good as the other photos I’ve made. Fast forward to now, I made a photo while I was sick, to distract me from the pain. I was originally going to add palm trees, Fiji bottles and a grid to the photo, but as soon as I inserted a rose, I saved it and I love how it turned out. I titled this “Trippy” because of the sides of the photo.

The thing that connects all of the photos I’ve made is that every time I finished creating something, I felt a rush of joy that I’ve never felt before. This makes me want to improve and come up with new ideas and pursue this skill further by becoming a Graphic designer.

Demand & Contacts:

Is this job going to be in demand in the future?

Most likely, no. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ current Occupational Outlook Handbook, the graphic field is expected to grow by 5 percent through 2026, which is slower than average. This may be the case because of the specializations required to get hired. Even if the field is smaller than average, it’s not easy to get a job because of again, specializations.

Who can help me pursue this career?

Through Upwork.com, you can find quality graphic designers, and contact them through the website.

Kathrina T:

“I am a Graphic Designer with over 8 years of professional experience in the industry. I am very proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. I have a lot of background in both Print and Web design. I have gained a Top-Rated status here on Upwork because of my successful collaborations with a lot of different clients. I am very passionate about what I do and my clients can attest to my professionalism, proven by the countless positive feedback I have garnered.”

Rated 5 stars, works 9 hours a day and has completed 204 jobs.

Video About Graphic Design:

This video is literally graphic design communicating the concept of graphic design. It goes over what the concept of graphic design is, (Communicating information through art) and gives examples of graphic design, such as when they presented the definition of a widow line, or kerning.

In the end, I want to pursue this career because I have the skills to do it and I find it interesting and fun. I am passionate about this field even if I’m an amaetuer and I enjoy graphic design as a pass time activity.
