Current Lab

Competencies

For our first experiment which we ran on our own, critical thinking became very important. It started with creating an experiment. We tested three different levels of voltage to determine which would be the best for finding the current. I started off with the idea of having 4 cells, but as I tested it, I realized that the voltage would interfere with the amps.

This showed me that often you need to revaluate your experiment to create a better procedure. When we got our results, we had related the data to why a certain thing happened. I also had good monitoring skills when it came to different steps along the way. This ensured that my experiment controls were perfect.

For the future, I want to be able to have more opinions and perspectives on creating a procedure. This will give me a higher chance of creating a successful experiment. Sometimes I misunderstand the difference between a hypothesis between a data related inference. I hope that eventually, I will be able to find a fine line between facts and guesses. This will make sure that I am able to find correct and approvable.

Text and Subtext Video

Core Competencies

I had decided to use the core competency critical thinking, I chose this because it was used heavily to create a good video. A big part of using this competency was figuring out how I feel about my story, and the way it begins and ends. Before beginning I brainstormed, this gave me the ability to work faster and with more thought out ideas. I also made sure that all parts of the story made sense and worked well with the story. I could have chosen easy and useless text, but I decided to work through it and come up with better ideas. This gave me the ability to have a detailed and interesting story. I also tried to use different ways to come up with ideas, such as, asking others, creating a web. While writing I didn’t stick with just one idea, I quickly made changes to give me variety.

For me I made sure that I looked at all the different directions I could have taken with my writing. I gave myself a goal, to make a creative but fun story, with all the correct criteria. This gave me the ability to keep on task and have an efficient work time. I finished the video on time, and I made sure it met all the goals and criteria I had set for myself. After I had finished the video, I looked back at it and gave myself pointers on what to do better next time. This gave me time to reflect and improve. I asked others to review and edit my story as well. This gave me a different point of view and helped me improve. From this I have learned that there are always different ways to look at something, to make it better.

For my video, I took my time. This gave it a very good story, with tons of detail and an enhanced character development. I created criteria for myself and had met every single one. But I was new to the app and hadn’t fully discovered all its tools and tricks. In the future I will look more into the app and try and find ways to make it nicer aesthetically. I hope to be able to make it nicer to look at, which gives the story an easier viewing experience. I also want to find a good way to brainstorm, without taking too long. I hope that I find a faster and more efficient way to come up with ideas and a more creative way of putting it on to the screen. I would also like to make it a little longer next time, so my characters can fully develop.

Explain the value of the TYKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education?, training?, travel?, work?).

I am looking to attend business school for post-secondary and I believe that doing an in-depth interview showed me how hard I will have to work to go far in life. I was also taught what it’s like to be in a business and the constant problems that occur. I saw how critical of a thinker you need to be to make it far in business. The TYKTW experience made me realize what I want to do when I get to that stage of my life.

Core Competencies

Creative thinking

Thinking outside the box, being innovative. That opens up more options for school projects and any other projects in future work. While deciding on the pictures for our project, we wanted to keep the door open for as many ideas as possible. My group and I decided to take pictures that will leave tons of space for us to make creative changes and edits. The first picture wasn’t originally taken in a forest but was taken on top of a rock. We had edited this in afterwards giving it a more realistic look. We chose not to take the photo inside of the forest due to time and resources, and we thought that the most creative way to resolve the issue was to edit the background. The second picture’s background wasn’t changed much, but we did add some Renaissance type paintings. We try to be as creative as possible when it came to subtle details that change the aesthetic of the picture.

Improvements can always be made, nothing is perfect. There were multiple times during this project where I struggled with creating new topics and ideas, this slowed down our project. My goal is to always have an idea or at least the foundation for an idea. This will give me the ability to start projects faster, and it will give me a creative edge. This will also help my future partnerships/groups since it will give us the ability to work faster and more creatively. In the future, I hope to have a wider way of thinking, which will give me the chance to give more perspective towards my work. I will also ask for new methods from teachers and peers. I always believe that you can never be too creative.

In the end, I believe that I will use these competencies for the rest of my life. Creative thinking has been very important to my writing and problem-solving. Although it is very important in English, it helps me in math and other subjects. In math, I often need to find a creative way to solve a word problem. Critical thinking is more important in mathematics, but creative thinking does have its role. I have also learned that critical thinking and creative thinking go hand-in-hand. I will continue to use both of these in the future.
