Core Competency Reflection

Recently in English 9, we were assigned a presentation. The requirements was to make a beat that matched the poem you selected. As a group of four, Gayatri, Julia, Emma and I presented the poem called The Flower of Mending by Vachel Lindsay. The core competency I will be writing about is Communication. 

The first bullet point that we did well as a group is “I can present information and ideas to an audience I may not know.” Me and my group have demonstrated this by presenting our poem in front of the class. I know a lot of classmates in English but, I have never properly introduced myself and I am unsure of some of their names.

The second core competency is “I am an active listener; I support and encourage the person speaking.” I have shown this when another member is speaking. Each member reads one stanza out of five stanzas. We have four members in our group and for the last stanza we all read it together as the beat stops. During this assignment, I have also shown this bullet point listening when other group are presenting. This is definitely crucial because presenting is not everyone’s strength.

Something I personally think I would do differently next time is presenting in front ofd the class. When me and my group were reading out our poem, we took a few seconds to get started and I hesitated a little. I would like to work on this because I think it gives off an impression that I didn’t practice, although I did. In the future I can avoid hesitating by not doubting myself and practice more in my own time.

To conclude, this project was enjoyable and I got an opportunity to socialize a little with my classmates. I also felt more comfortable with my classmates after presenting. I have reflected on the core competency; ‘Communication’.
