Invention reflection

For this project we were supposed to create any invention that we thought other people would benefit from. An invention that would make people’s lives easier. To help us with this, we got questions, and a triple bottom line to help guide us. A triple bottom line is economic, environmentally friendly, and ethical. Meaning, that if your invention met all three points on the triple bottom line then your project was likely to succeed. Your project could be a reinvention of something that already exists, or a completely new idea (fictional or non-fictional).

After every project, it is good to reflect on what you did well, and what you need to improve on. For my core competency I am choosing creative thinking because this project required lots of creativity in creating an invention. The first point I chose is ‘I get ideas that are new to my peers’ I demonstrate this skill when we were coming up with inventions, and we had to choose one. We made a list of 20-30 possible inventions, and all of the ideas that I gave were original and unlike the others. For my second bullet point I chose ‘’I can develop a body of creative work over time in an area I’m interested or passionate about’ because when I am passionate about what I am doing, it is always done well and with care. When I put my mind to something, it always turns out great because when I enjoy what I am doing it makes me want to put in more time. For my third bullet point I chose ‘I get ideas when I use my senses to explore’ because I have great and accessible resources through my peers, teachers, family, and technology. I feel that I get easily inspired, and I build my own ideas onto others. For my fourth and final bullet point I chose is ‘I get ideas when I play my ideas are fun for me and make me happy’ because when I come up with a good idea, I am proud of it. I take great pride in my work and that’s what inspires me to work hard. I demonstrated this skill during this project when creating the sway because by the end, I was proud of it. There were some things I would like to improve on for next time, but I did still like how it turned out

I have chosen three core competencies that I feel like I need to improve on, to further my work. The first bullet point I chose is ‘If my ideas don’t work, I change what I am doing’ because it is hard for me to simply ‘let go’ of old ideas, even if they aren’t working well for me. I like to try and find a way to make what I have done work, but sometimes time is better spent starting again. For my second bullet point I chose is ‘I have interests and passions that I pursue over time’ because when it comes to projects, and schoolwork I always find myself wanting to try something new and changing my thinking. This is not a bad thing, but sometimes it is hard to find passions that I can pursue overtime rather than instantly. For my third and final bullet point I chose is ‘I use my experiences with various steps and attempts to direct my future work’ because I think I need to improve on my connection skills. I could’ve demonstrated this skill better by connecting this project to the digital literacy sway project because for the invention project we used sway as well. I could’ve taken tips and strategies from my other presentation to increase my knowledge, and make my project look more visual.

For this project, we were assigned to create a fort based off of the life of the people in 1685. We were supposed to act as the Chief Trader who has just received a significant amount of financial banking, and we were set out to start our own fort to compete in the old world. The goal of this project was to create a fort that would be able to compete against other tribes, and it would be able to succeed. This project relates to group work because it forces us to make a group, and communicate within each other. We had to decide how to share the workload, are we had to make sure that we were all on the same page when it came to editing, and thinking. In my opinion, this is the area where my group found the most success, and where we struggled the most. What I mean by this is when we were communicating often, and sharing ideas, our project was working very, very well. When we started to work on our own time, and not communicate, our project was off track and it was hard to agree on things cause we didn’t talk out why we thought the way we did.

For my core competency I chose communication because as I said before, communication is the key to group work. For my first bullet point I chose ‘I can work with others to achieve a common goal; I do my share’ because my group and I separated the workload evenly, and did our part well. For my second bullet point I chose ‘I can give, receive, and act on feedback’ because I think that this is one of the most important parts of working with a group. You can ask your group members for their opinion, and share ideas. I think we did this very well as a group when we were sharing ideas, and deciding how we wanted to represent our ideas. For my third bullet point I chose ‘I can demonstrate information in a clear and organized way’ because my group and I demonstrated this skill through our powerpoint (linked above) when we explained every building in our fort. My fourth and final bullet point I chose that I think I did well on is ‘recognizing that there are different points of view, and I know how to disagree respectfully’ I did this when we were deciding between making a voice over video or a powerpoint because all group members had their own idea on how they wanted to present our project, so we had to respectfully discuss why we thought our way was better than the other.

For my next project, I would like to improve two of my core competencies for communication. The first bullet point I would like to improve on is; ‘I can present information and ideas to an audience I may not know’ because when I don’t know the person who I am talking to I tend to get shy, and don’t share my ideas. The second bullet point I chose is ‘I am an active listener; I support and encourage the person speaking’ because I find it hard to stay focused, but when I am focused I do encourage the speaker, but I can get better at it.
