Alternate Portfolio Assignment #1

I chose this English 9 assignment as one of the two articles of work I have produced over the Spring Break. The assignment is a part of a novel study on the novella “Animal Farm” written by George Orwell. The novella is based on the Russian Revolution and how it lead to formation of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (also known as the Russian SFSR), and later the (although not explicitly stated) Union of Soviet Socialist Republics’ (also known as the USSR or Soviet Union) formation and a reign of terror.

This assignment displays the use of the critical thinking and social responsibility core competencies. This assignment shows the skills I used to analyze, read between the lines, and draw comparisons. As most of the content in the novella is based on a real life historical event, it is important to be able to draw comparisons. The assignment also shows throughout how I am able to cite and explain when something is unfair, as well as identifying important events and conflicts in the story.

Throughout the assignment, I was able to display the use of my core competency skills. However, reviewing the assignment, I can identify areas where I could have improved on. For example, the quotes cited may have been able to be more specific, rather than the lengthy paragraphs/parts of paragraphs I left them to be. Overall, I would say there were definitely areas that I could have improved given the time frame, but the sentences/paragraphs were coherent, detailed, and was definitely clear in its reason to be there. To me, it isn’t that big of a deal that the assignment was very lengthy right now, but I also see it as something to keep in mind about for when/if I pursue a post-secondary education where everything matters as I progress.

Alternate Portfolio Assignment #2

Link

In this English 9 assignment, I’ve primarily displayed the use of the communication core competency. I used several of the skills throughout, but the few that standout is the ability to understand, share, and present information relevant to the topic, as well as some critical thinking skills such as being able to distinguish between what makes something a fact, opinion, interpretation, or judgement.

The question being answered here is “In his role as leader, what did Napoleon do to strengthen his power?”. To answer this question, I first had to explore the material and actions, then distinguish between factual evidence and disinformation occurring within the novella. An example of this is where I identify and point out the false information being spread by Squealer to make sure that Napoleon retains his position without too much of a problem. To be sure I have an understanding as to what is being given, I organized the points into a paragraph to make it easier to read.

Overall, this assignment gives perspective in what I have learned and how I have progressed. If I were able to spend a bit of time to put in some finishing touches and some more evidence, I would be pretty proud of this assignment. In addition, more research could be done from me around the author and the background details of the book. Reflecting on the assignment gives me a chance to assess the areas where I may have been able to do better, fueling the fire that enables further growth in the future.

Extracurricular activities

Extracurricular activities are things that I do not really do much compared to the last couple of years where I had the time to do so and do homework. I have done activities such as basketball, badminton, archery, dodgeball (before it was dropped as an available activity), swimming, and probably more. However, despite the indefinite hiatus on these activities, I do take a good interest in keeping up with discussions especially in international relations and politics, as well as learning other things that interest me such as science videos on YouTube and what not.

Here is a playlist on how cooking has been influenced by science, as well as a few videos outside the realm of cooking but just on food in general.
