Overall:  How Do You Feel About What You’re learning?

We have been learning about the Industrial Revolution and that technical progress doesn’t happen automatically. It is the result from “hard work, and critical and creative thinking.” In learning about the Industrial Revolution, I was able to propose an invention and actually create it. My invention that I created is an improvement and I was able to actually create it and even have the option to sell it. I love that I was able to put what I learned into a product that I recreatedIt was interesting and fun to do research on something I was interested in; It didn’t feel like a typical draining school project. I also loved presenting my information in a power point brochure.

Communication: Did you make use of any new digital media (programs apps)?

I used several digital media to recreate this Invention Project: Vintage logo, Power Point, One Note. The new one that I’ve never used is Vintage Logo. This app allowed me to make my logo for my product. I liked it because there were many options to choose from. It was quick and easy to use. I like this app and I could probably use this app again when I need to make a logo, such as my album cover or merchandise for my tour. I didn’t want to spend too much time on my logo because I wanted to spend most of my time doing the research for my product or the actual making of my product.

Critical Thinking: What have you learned about your ability to think critically to assess sources of information and arrive at a conclusion?

I believe I was able to think critically because there are many problems associated with straws. The first problem was plastic. This material has not been environmentally friendly. I came up with lollipop straws because they can be eaten or can be biodegradable. Another problem is silicone straws are expensive and not always readily available. To solve this, lollipop straws can be made very inexpensively. Paper straws are flimsy when they are soaked in liquid for a long period of time. Lollipop straws can last in liquid for a longer time than paper straws. Cardboard straws have a funky smell and a horrible after taste. My lollipop straws can have flavors or no flavor at all. Another problem are sizes, tall, medium or short. No problem, my lollipop straws can be all sizes. Lastly, straws come in different forms, such as slurpee spoon straws or large boba tea straws. Not a problem for my lollipop straws because they can be easily formed or rolled. The sweetness of lollipop straws could become a problem for teeth/cavities. With this in mind, we created sugar free lollipops! My lollipop straws can also come in all sorts of colors that are very attractive for people to choose from. I was able to create a straw that was firm, biodegradable, environmentally safe, pretty, inexpensive, various styles and sizes. It was reassuring to solve all of the possible problems associated with my product.

Creative Thinking: Did you come up with a new idea, invention, piece of art, or another creative artifact?

I have created a unique and original idea. I haven’t seen anything like it! I created lollipop straws. A few years ago, my brother and sister and I saw an image of a turtle with a straw stuck inside its nostril. I’ve never been able to erase that image. The ocean has been polluted by plastics and our ocean life is suffering. As a result of this we started using silicone straws. The idea is good but not everyone uses it because it’s expensive. Some people may have it but may not use it all the time because they don’t always carry it with them. So I thought, this lollipop straw needs to be made in an inexpensive way. Nowadays, the paper straw or cardboard straw is used at restaurants and shops everywhere. The problem is the smell and aftertaste and flimsiness of the paper or cardboard. That’s why lollipop straws can solve this problem. There are different kinds of straws and my lollipop straws can come in all sorts of sizes and in a variety of styles because the lollipop can be molded easily before it hardens. I was able to create a straw that was firm, biodegradable, environmentally safe, pretty, inexpensive, various styles and sizes. It was reassuring to solve all of the possible problems associated with my product.

Positive Personal and Cultural Identity: How does this change your view of yourself and the world?

This changes my view of the world a lot because I didn’t know how toxic and bad plastic can be. Plastic is not biodegradable; plastic can make people very sick like have cancer. People keep on using plastic without knowing what they are using and even though people see it on the news that plastic is bad I don’t think they will listen but if they did their research like I did then I think they would be more careful when working with plastic in an everyday life. When I started learning more about how plastic is bad for our environment, I started telling my friends and family to not use it and I told them why and they were amazed. If I used this product around the world, I believe my business would turn successful. I believe that if I sold this around the world people would feel like they’re making a difference because even though there are some people who don’t believe in plastic pollution there are more people who do so if we sell my lollipop straws to that group of people then I would be even more successful. If we can stop this soon more animals will survive and our come to our environment is more safe.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility: Did you learn new ways to set goals or organize your life? Explain.

Yes! I was learning about Industrial Revolution and I was able to recreate the plastic straw into lollipop straws. I was able to set goals for myself by creating a timeline of when I wanted to finish my product and research and presentation. I felt more organized and accomplished because I created daily and weekly goals that were short and attainable. I loved talking about my ideas with my family and I realized that my family has a lot of good questions and ideas, no matter how old they are. I thought my younger brother and sister were young and probably wouldn’t understand my product but they brought up good questions that I had to answer and solve. The next time I need to figure out a project or a problem in my life, I’m going to create a timeline, with short attainable goals and I will seek out help from my family.

Social Responsibility: Describe how you contributed to the wellbeing of your family, community, society or environment.

I’ve reduced my use and my family’s use of plastic and this has been able contribute to the well being of my family and community. I’ve informed them of the impact of our overuse and misuse of plastic, especially, one time use plastic, such as straws. Now, my family has shared this information with their extended family and friends and hopefully, they’ve been able to inspire others to reduce their use of plastic. A small number of people can trickle to a large group of people. Environmentally, we are reducing our use of plastic which has helped save our animals. As a society, I have partnered up with OceanwiseOceanwise Gala has invited me to perform and share my talent of singing to help bring awareness in preserving our animal life.

Animal Farm Campaign Poster

What propaganda techniques did you use to design this poster?

In my campaign, “Say No to Trump, Say No to Napoleon!” I am using three propaganda techniques: appeal to celebrities/authority, fear, and hyperbole. Propaganda techniques are used to influence an audience’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviours.

By appealing to celebrities/authority, I have drawn a poster of Napoleon from Animal Farm in the image of Donald Trump. Trump is both a celebrity and someone of authority. Trump has had a negative response from many American citizens, as well as many other people around the world. Trump is similar to Napoleon because they are both corrupt and terrible leaders. Napoleon is corrupt because he breaks laws to his advantage. Napoleon is so corrupt that he would execute someone else’s life if they get in his way. Trump is popular in a negative way because of his corrupt leadership and Napoleon is the same. Because we are all familiar with Donald Trump, I used his image and combined that with Napoleon’s image. Using an image we are all familiar with, allows us to attach ourselves more easily.

I also used fear as a technique because fear evokes a scared emotion. Instilling fear in the audience, allows the audience to choose the opposition. In this case, many people fear that Trump may continue to president for a few more years. More so, many of the animals fear having Napoleon continue on being the leader. This encourages the fearful audience to choose other leaders, rather than Trump or Napoleon. In the case of Animal Farm, the fear of this poster encourages the audience to choose Snowball.

Thirdly, I used “hyperbole” as another technique. Napoleon’s image is exaggerated to look like the image of Trump, a leader who is corrupt and cruel.

“Say No to Trump, Say No to Napoleon!” slogan helps the audience realize how horrible Napoleon is in Animal Farm because the audience knows how terrible Trump is as a president.  This slogan also uses the same three propaganda techniques.

What could I have done better?

Because I did this project on my own, I didn’t get the chance to discuss details about the book. I enjoy having conversations about characters and plots while i’m reading the book. I also wasn’t able to bounce ideas about my campaign poster with others. I like seeing other people’s ideas and I didn’t get a chance to do that either.

On another note, this was the first time I purchased both a copy of the book as well as the audio version. I really enjoyed listening to the story and I was able to listen to parts over again if I needed to. As a musician, I know that I’m definitely an auditory learner. I didn’t realize that I could use audio books as another way to read a book. In the future, I will use audio books for any novel that I have to read for school because I felt that I didn’t struggle as much as I have in the past.

Extra Curricular

When I was younger, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grow up but whenever I started singing, I was happy. I started singing in front of my Grandparents then when I got used to singing in front of them, I started singing in front of my uncles and aunts or in Filipino terms Titos and Titas. Then after that I started singing at galas, weddings and popular venues like the Apollo, Carnegie hall, we day and so much more. I love to sing because when I sing in front of people when they smile and relax, because then I’m like that. I find that pretty good. When I put my heart and soul into each sentence, I sing the more people either cry or smile at my songs and I find that, that can be life changing.

When i was somewhere around six years old I entered this contest called the P.N.E contest. I guess it’s a contest for anyone who likes to dance, sing, sort of like Americas got talent but locally. I entered this contest because one of my favorite singers Michael bubble entered this contest. He won the whole thing. I got into the finals and sang route 66 but Nat king Cole it’s an awesome jazz song. After everyone performed, they got into a row and they asked different questions to all the contestants and my question was who your favorite singers are and said Michael Jackson and Michael bubble and guess who showed up, it was Michael bubble! My hands started to shake when I shook his hand and I was very sweating but after that I won the whole thing and won 5,000 dollars. from that moment forward I knew what I wanted to be. A singer. Now I play the piano, drums, guitar, dance, songwriter, and a singer. In conclusion when I grow up, I want to become a singer/songwriter.

My reflection for English

MY REFLECTION

Through the past years I have thought these were one of my better presentations. Some things that i have thought I’ve done well at was being confident when I talked, when I put some emotion into my speech and making sentences that make sense. When I did the presentation, I thought I was very confident in myself because I felt very comfortable when I told my speech to everyone. Another reason why I thought I was confident is because I had emotion. I like having lots of emotion in my speech because it can change the whole story from beginning to end. it can make the story happy or sad. I find that if people have good emotions in their speeches and presentations, I find it can be more interesting. But with that I need to be comfortable so when I finished writing my speech, I practiced a lot so when it was my turn, I could be more confident. There are lots of things I can work on but one of the big things can be editing more on the story. I thought I can work on this part more because sometimes my story can have ongoing boring sentences and can have some simple errors like capitals and periods. But hopefully one day I can have no mistakes in my writing.

There could have been lots of ways we could work with the wood bugs but Kevin and i used the wood bugs to see if they liked syrup or lemon better. We thought this was a good idea because we wanted to know if they liked sweet or sour because in the garbage there’s a bunch of different smells and tastes. One of the ways we got organized by splitting the workload with each other so it wasn’t such a hassle. I got the Lemon and the box while Kevin got the maple syrup and the bowls so it worked all perfectly. I thought i worked well with kevin when doing this project because we both listened to each other and we both compromised with each other. Another way we communicated was that we built different ideas on top of each other so we could make this experiment the best we could.

The conclusion: In conclusion it turns out that they liked syrup better. Kevin thought they liked syrup because it had that old sweet taste as if it was in the garbage.

what we could work on :

With my group we didn’t communicate as much on making them feel like their at home because we just put it in a big cardboard box with just a bowl of lemon and a bowl of maple syrup and i just felt that if we put any plants , dirt or both. Another thing we could have worked on is to be more descriptive on the notes because we just said the basic things on this experiment but besides that i thought we did pretty well.

Short story Assignment – DigitalStorytelling

In middle school there was a lot of things that I had to figure out and one of the things that I had to learn was how to becoming confident because I didn’t really know how to be confident in front of my peers without being nervous. Some strategies that I would use would be writing my speech. I would say it out loud instead of saying it in my head. I feel that when you say it out loud you can see your errors and where you went wrong but if you say it in your head it’s definitely way harder for me personally. Another way you can practice is to practice in front of your peers, family, grandparents etc and if you can get comfortable with them then I believe you can perform in front of anyone. I would use that strategy whenever I learn a new song so I don’t get nervous or mess up when I do the song. I find that all of these strategies can help you in the future and for me this helped a lot because when I did this presentation I was very confident and was very proud of myself.

There are lots of things I can work on but one of the big things can be editing more on the story. I feel that it’s something that everyone has to work on because if you don’t edit your work you can make mistakes and you won’t get the results the you want. I also think I can work on this part more because sometimes my story can have ongoing boring sentences and can have some simple errors like capitals and periods. But hopefully one day I can have no mistakes in my writing.
