Communication Self-assessment

  1. Do you Communicate your ideas and opinions in a respectful way? Answer: Yes, I try to bring my thoughts up in respectful ways so that they will be heard and not frowned upon because of how I bring them up.
  2. Communicating your questions or concerns to teachers or parents. Answer:  I communicate my concerns and questions usually very well to my parents. Sometimes I find that I keep some emotion in and if I disagree with something, I bite my tongue and don’t say anything.
  3. Ways I demonstrate communication include. Communicating during sport activities with teammates in basketball. Checking in the friends and family to make sure that they are doing alright and if they have any problems just listen to what they say. Trying to meet new people in my classes during Covid. Trying to engage people in a conversation while trying to keep distance has been hard. That’s one of the challenges with communication this year.

 

Creative thinking.

  1. Using creative thinking in assignments and in schoolwork. This year there has been a lot of here’s an outline for an assignment, you have the freedom to do whatever you would like with it. I have developed a lot of creative thinking skills through these assignments. Trying to convey my ideas in a creative way either through the likes of PowerPoints, presentations, and essays. This wasn’t always easy; I think this competency is one I struggle with the most as I sometimes find it hard to think outside the box.
  2. Ways I demonstrate Creative thinking. I demonstrate creative thinking in schoolwork. Like said above I use it almost every day. I brainstorm ideas by creating mind maps, searching for ideas, communicating with others, and looking at past work I have done for inspiration.

 

Social responsibility

  1. I use social responsibility almost every day. Giving back to community is a big thing in my family. We have done things through my basketball club like cleaning up parks and picking up garbage throughout our community. I think that its very important to hold yourself to a high standard. Making sure you know if you’re making a mistake that could get you in trouble or cause you regret later in life. Being responsible for yourself, the people around you and the area you are in is very important. Volunteering is something that I would like to do more of. I have only done it a couple times with basketball clubs and Port Moody rec center. I want to be able to give back more and volunteer doing things I enjoy.

Spring Meal Plan and groceries

Creative thinking.

This project involved to coming up with a 4 course meal that I would be able to actually serve to my family. We didn’t need to cook it but we had to get creative and find recipes for a good meal. I chose said meal because I have had something like it in a restaurant. that my parents and I really liked. I had to use the competency of building my skills up to succeed. When I first came up with a idea for a meal. It was to simple and it didn’t think that it would get me the mark I wanted to get. I built on that idea and expanded it into a bigger meal with a lot more aspects to it.

Another competency that I used was, I made my ideas work, or I changed them. Finding the right dessert was a challenge. There is a wide variety of desserts out there, ranging to chocolate to vanilla and expensive to cheap. I second guessed myself a lot when I choose what dessert to use. I originally used a cake but thought it was too simple. I then agreed on apple pie because it is my favorite dessert ever and a lot of people like apple pie as well.

One of the problems I can across when doing this project was the groceries order that we did. We needed to make a list of ingredients and prices for said ingredients. We were supposed to use save on foods online website, but because of covid 19, they had limited the things you could purchase online. I knew that it would be hard to find a price, so used the competency of building on others ideas. A idea that my friend had was to look on other websites, just so you can have a ball park price. I was like, that’s a great idea. I wanted to check with the teacher first though. she said that you could do that or just leave it blank. I devolved on his idea, by looking at multiple stores and cross referencing the prices. Overall, this may have been a problem at the time, but looking back, it wasn’t a significate problem.

Alternate Assignment 1

Assignment: Invention project, Socials
This project used critical thinking in ways like, designing my invention. I had to think about function over appearance and how I wanted to make it. I was able to show if I liked the design or not and if I wanted to change it. If I felt think something needed changing, I would have changed it. Another good thing was me reflecting on how I though of the invention. I needed to come up with 10 ideas and the pillow idea was the first one. I talked to my family and got their input and that helped me think of other ideas too. I ended up making sure my invention was as functional as possible and looks as good as I can make it. Overall, used critical thinking in lots of ways.

Another way I used critical thinking was experimenting different ways of doing things. I came up with multiple inventions I can use so that I could pick the best one. I used different ideas that solved my parents’ problems they gave me. One was cleaning, my dad loves cleaning so one invention as a multi use vacuum. At the start of the project, I was going a bit slow and the ideas part was taking a bit to long. I identified that and made sure to get moving with the project and not get caught up on one part. I ended up going back to finish the brainstorm off and all the ideas came all at once. I think that if I didn’t take a break form that one part, I would have been trying to think of more ideas for far to long.

The problem I had in this project was to explore the different ideas I came up with. I choose one too soon, and it made the project harder than it should have been. The invention I choose had limited possibility with it, it was harder to make up things to do with it. If I would have choose the vacuum idea or a different idea, I would have been able to add on more and more information and different ideas within that one invention. Overall, I think that this project was a positive experience and I learned a lot from it. My only wish is that I would have picked a better invention.

Reflection

Social responsibility

I used social responsibility in many ways in this assignment. For example, I didn’t know most of the people in my group so I used the competency social responsibility. I was cooperative and kind and can build relationships. We had to get the work done without knowing each other so the first thing we did was try to get to know each other. Another example, was though this was an assignment that we work on our work separately, we were able to come together and help each other if we needed it. An example of when we helped each other, was when one group member needed help with the qualitative and quantitative observations, so we all chipped in and gave ideas. I think that this was a great group because we were supportive and we were all kind to each other. In conclusion, I demonstrated a cooperative and kind environment and I can build relationships with people of my choosing in a lot of different ways.

Another one was solving problems in a peaceful way. If we had a problem, we would talk about it as a group and help each other. For example. one group member didn’t do there questions so, we weren’t mad. We helped the person out and reminded them about what to do next. I also helped my group with questions they had. there was a question with the schematic diagram that one group member had that I help them with. ( they didn’t know where the ammeter went). I think this was one of the reasons that we did well and got it out on time. If we disagreed on something, we got both of the opinions. In conclusion, my group and I demonstrated problem solving in different situations many times.

The only problem that I ran into was that I had a ski race on the day we did the experiment. That meant that I was there to help out and take the notes needed. My group did a great job even when I wasn’t there. They sent me pictures of the circuit and updated me on how it went. They also went over the experiment with me the next day. they showed me even more pictures they took and the notes. I also was told more about what the Sway had entitled to it. This competency was more of communication because they were helping me catch up with what I missed. I really enjoyed my group because we all pulled our own weight and help each other out. I also think that our Sway was a huge success.

 

 

 

Animal Farm Graphic

This past week, my English class has been reading Animal Farm, we were assigned a group project so we could covey our learning. I demonstrated active listening in multiple ways, we had a bit of a disagreement about what animal to use at the start, My partner wanted to do a different animal, he had a different option. We talked it through and eventually concluded that we were both satisfied with. It went very well after we got over that. We decided to do the poster over the weekend because we had a very busy week with grade 9 basketball. There was good communication there, we both had the same thought of what to write on the poster. That was a good way we demonstrated the communication competency.

A very big road block that we hit, was one of our group members was sick with strep throat. So, we had to take on more of a work load to deal with our sick partner. That was a setback because we had to adapt and do the work with just two group members instead of three. We powered through though and got the project done. Using the strategies, I talked about in my last paragraph, we came up with a plan. The script was done during flex of Monday and Tuesday. We met up in the foods room and got a feasible script together. I was happy that we were able to communicate what we wanted and come up with a date to do the project even though we had a busy schedule.

If I was to do this project again, I would have done more in class. We didn’t have the resources to do the work in class because of a basketball tourney we had. I also would have had our sick group member do some work and email it to use so we could present with him doing some work. This was a fun project because I got to do this with my friends. We weren’t very artistic so I think that we should have included more writing or at least some colour. Overall, I think that we did a good job of communicating what we needed to and get over the problems we faced.

Extracurricular Assignment

My Extracurricular activity is basketball. Basketball has played an important part in my life so far. It is something that I can always go do and enjoy in my free time. Right now, I’m on the Grade 9 Boys basketball team at Heritage Woods Secondary School. I know a lot of people on this team and love to play and hangout with them. I’m hoping that our team will do well this year. I’ve been playing basketball since grade 2 where I started in a club called VSC or Vancouver Sports club. My first ever basketball game I watched came at the age of 6 months old. I watched the Basketball Highschool Provincials as my dad was the coach of the Gleneagle Talons and I came to support them in between my diaper changing and bottle feeding. Right now my position is the 4 or the Power forward its called. Though that’s my position at the moment, I have played all over the court. Sometimes I’m a Point Guard and sometimes I’m a big man. It all depends on the game. I got involved in basketball from a young age because my dad was a coach, but now its much more than that. I love to play the game no matter who I’m playing with. No matter if its a game of pick up in the gym, or a playoff game with my Club team, basketball is always enjoyable. Like I said at the start, basketball holds a place near and dear to my heart and it will stay like that forever.

As I said in my paragraph before but I play for my school’s grade 9 team. I also play for a club called Swish. I have played for Tri City and other clubs in the past as well. I played Tri City rep, and right now I play for Swish. My main priority is my high school team that practices around 4 times a week while my Swish team plays 1 once a week. Basketball is my main sport that I play 5 times a week. I enjoy basketball for many reasons. The main one is because it is fun. I like to play with my friends and family. I forget all my problems or homework while I’m playing basketball and just think about the game. That is another reason I love basketball.

Finally, I get inspired to play basketball from a variety of people. The first person is my dad. he got me into playing basketball from a young age so I kept playing when I got older. Another inspiration is watching the NBA. Skiing

The mountain glistens white with fluffy snow                            Reflection at the bottom
The frozen stream thick with snow and ice
The fluffy spluffy white snow falling very slow
The mountain is a skier’s paradise
Skiing down the mountain with joy and ease
A peaceful silence is heard at the top
The Whiskey Jacks singing high up in the trees
The snow crunching as you come to a stop
On the very last run the great day is done
You savor every minute on the mountain
Once down the skiing is done but was very fun
You can still feel the calling of the mountains
The glistening mountains can be seen from home

Core Competency: Creative thinking.
Here is evidence that I can… generate new ideas, build upon my ideas, build upon or combine ideas of others, develop ideas through experimentation or writing, use setbacks to advance my thinking, take significant risks with my thinking etc.
I showed creative thinking in ways like, I had to problem solve when I ran into a problem. The problem that I ran into was that I had to rhythm the last of the sentences. I had a bit of trouble finding words to rhyme but eventually, I was able to get past that problem. I also had to be creative with how I started the lines of the sonnet. I didn’t want to start the lines the same way every time so that was a bit of a struggle. The final problem I ran into was finding a topic to write about. The problem was that I wanted to find an interesting topic that I wanted to write about, while having lots to write about the topic. That was when I thought of skiing. It had lots to talk about with the mountains, water and the actual skiing part.
Another thing that I’m happy with is my use of describing words. I think that I described the mountains and snow very well. Another reason I chose my topic was because skiing is one of my passions that I love to do with my dad. We go up to whistler ad much as possible. My last line was “The best place in the world is Whistler Blackcomb”, I chose this line because my favorite place to ski is in whistler and the mountain is Whistler Blackcomb. The ending “Comb” rhymes with home and that was another reason I picked it. Overall, I think I was able to get over my challenges and create a sonnet that I’m happy with.
Ways I want to improve are…
I wanted to make up a better word. It took me about 20 minutes for me to come up with the word “spluffy”. It was supposed to mean fluffy, I didn’t have a that great of a time even finding this word. I think with more time and more effort on my part I could have came up with another word. Another thing that I wanted to improve is the last two sentences. I think that it makes sense, it makes sense to me, but I’m not so sure if my teacher will understand the last words. My last sentence was “the best place in the world is whistler Blackcomb. If my teacher doesn’t know about the ski resort, then I can see why it can be confusing. Like I said in my last paragraph, I’m happy with my work and think that these improvements are only minor.
