Core Competencies Self Assessment

Communicating

Reading, speaking, the two main ways to communicate with another. They are very similar, but at the same opposites. Speaking is faster, more truthful, and is used differently by everyone. Reading is my personal favourite, because it sparks imagination, as well as makes you question if what your are reading is fiction or non fiction. Reading is the ability to make someones mind picture anything you wish, that is one of the most powerful gifts someone can have.

Social Responsibility (point form)

As a member of the Heritage Woods basketball team it is my responsibility to make everyone on my team is okay, and help them when needed.

As a student it is my responsibility to help my fellow peers by, verbally, written, and share my supplies when needed.

As a member of the community I do what I can to help the environment by, using a re-usable water bottle, also I car pool, and I take my mom’s electric car as much as possible.

As a member of society my future and my peers futures matter, so I clean up after myself and hold others accountable. To make a better for my kids, and theirs.

Creative Thinking

Poetry Assignment

I came into this world on a dark night,

It was only seven years later I passed from this life;

I liked to smell the stories carried in the wind;

I wish I had more time,

For I hope my nuisance wasn’t a crime;

My picture will always be on the wall as my imprint.

Vocabulary Assignment

Rank (2) –  I chose rank because it is word not used in modern day times, but the author of my book did a fantastic job using this word as the story is set in the past. Words like rank made me think how much the English language has changed over time.

Murk (11) – Murk is a word that originated from German to old English, and it fits perfectly as the main character has to speak German in his travel to a foreign country. The impact small little words can have make the book and the story a lot better.

Prophylactic (24) – I have never heard this word before, and it struck me when I read it, it then became crucial to the story. When this word was written in the book it was a turning point in the stage of mind the main character.

Voluptuousness (28) – Voluptuousness is another example of a word that was forgotten overtime, as we do not use it often anymore. The main character was facing a life or death situation when this word came into play, as needed to restrain himself or he would die.

Reticent (43) – I chose reticent because I haven’t heard this word before. It had a big impact on the story as it when the main character started to become suspicious.

Idolatrous (69) – Idolatrous means to idolize something, but back in the time this book was set it was bad to idolize anything but god. The reason I chose was because it showed how a man trying to understand something he feels but knows it is wrong.

Goitre (86) – Goitre was very important to this story as it was the result after being bit, and being bit was the last you wanted to happen. I would have described the bite differently in a longer less understandable way, now that I know this word my vocabulary has expanded.

Barometrical (102) – Barometrical relating to atmospheric pressure, I never knew you could measure this. It was important to the story because a character after getting bit felt like the pressure of the atmosphere was changing around him, and that there was so much the human eye can’t see.

Athwart (116) – I picked athwart because it is not used often in today’s English, and is an easier and more precise way of describing something going from one side to another. Athwart also is important to the story as one character as he describes how fast Dracula can move.

Undulating (145) – Undulating is a word I have never heard or used, but in the story it is used in an odd way. The main character is describing how Dracula was moving down the castles walls, this is important because it gives the reader a description of how Dracula hunts his prey.

Social Responsibility Core Competency Reflection

I participated in the classroom activities, so that the classroom can improve. I demonstrated this by improving my classmates poster by giving them a peer edit. By participating I was able to help my classmates do better on their projects, and in turn they helped me, by also participating in editing my poster. If no one in the class decided to participate it would effect our marks, now that we have had our peers edit our posters, we know what we need to work on and improve for next time. Another thing I did was, work in this environment to make a positive change. I showed this by not talking when work needs to get done, and putting my best effort into this poster. By doing this I hope to be a role model, and to not verbally show what needs to be happening in that moment whether it be work or socializeing. Lastly, I contribute to the class to make it a better place. I try to do this by raising my hand when I know the answer to a question, and by helping others better understand the assignment. Overall, I feel I have made a positive impact on the classroom by trying to be a role model, and helping others out when needed.

When I am in need of help, I ask for it, and I am able to solve some problems for myself. I have asked for help when I don’t understand a lot of times. For example, I wasn’t sure how many bullet points you needed for one paragraph in this reflection, so what I did was ask Holden for help, he explained what I needed to do and I did it. Secondly, on my poster I clarified problems, considered the alternatives, and evaluated my strategies. I did this on my poster with my images, when I first printed them I realized they were humongous, so I made them smaller and through trial and error I got a size that fit. Thirdly, I identified problems and compared problem-solving strategies. On my poster I had many problems especially with colouring it. On my poster there are a lot of colours, I understood that too many colours is not good so I had to change it. First, what I did was think about different points that could be the same colour but still would come out as bold and important, eventually I decided that my bullet points right in the middle of my poster could be the same colour and still be seen as important so I changed it. In conclusion, I am able to solve problems, but recognize when to ask for help, also I can fix my problems by using problem solving strategies.

Something I need to work on is, recognizing when someone needs support and providing it. The only time I give support is when someone asks me for it, the reason for this is I am was thinking/working on my project, so I had no idea when someone needed help unless they asked me. When I get better at this I think I will become a better role model for the class. Another thing I need to improve is, being part of a group. If there is an option to do it in partners or by yourself, I will always choose by myself, because I trust myself to get it done. Though if someone I know and trust comes up to me and asks to be my partner I will happily agree. On the other hand, if I am with someone I know is going to slack off, I will take most to all of the work load and carry them on my back. Last thing I need to work on is co-operatively with others for the same reasons as the second point. Overall, I have a lot of things to work on but I feel I can improve.

Current Lab

Current Lab Reflection

One thing our group did well was we were able to respond simple and direct questions. For example, my group was putting the ammeter in parallel when it was supposed to be in series. Ms. Chan told us we had it wrong, so we changed it and fixed the wrong results. Another example of our group being able to respond to simple direct questions is, we were deciding who would do what and when my named was called I did my part. Overall our group was able to work together and respond to simple direct questions.

Secondly, in my group I was able to take on roles and responsibilities. An example of this is, I got all the supplies for my group and set up all the different circuits with Aiden Thompson. Also in the sway I took on the role writing out all the supplies and test results. Another I did for our group was the design of the sway, I did the design with Aiden Thompson as well. In the end I took on several roles, getting all the equipment, setting it all up, putting the results in the sway, and lastly designing the sway.

Something our group could’ve done better is, present our information in an organized way. Our lab was very messy with wires everywhere. Also it was hard to take the picture, because it was so stretched out. Another messy problem about our lab is the readings for parallel, as that they were pretty much the same.

Core Competency Reflection – Critical Thinking

Core Competencies Reflection

Here is evidence that I can…strategize, analyze, reason, estimate, model, be creative, visualize, reflect and revise, connect, use mistakes to advance learning, use technology or other tools, extend, reason logically, adapt my ideas, etc.

Core Competency: Critical Thinking

I can successfully take information from different perspectives and use it to help me advance toward my goals. Also I can reflect on my thinking and evaluate my actions and change them for better. I can use criteria to try to best get what I want. I will ask open-ended questions to gain more information. I can experiment with different way of doing things such as the comic strip I did for the American Revolution which I had never made before. I can use and make criteria for design options, I did this with the layout of my comic strip for example I knew I needed twenty slides. I always monitor my progress and adjust my actions to make sure I hand in something on time. I will make the right choices to create the impact I needed to.

Ways I want to improve are…

I have a hard time showing something that I like or don’t like, because of how I don’t have good facial expressions. I don’t know how to explore with different materials. I usually use one way to go through with something and change it as I go.
